  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Eminem "Phenomenal" Music Video Teaser - Shot on Weapons and Master Anamorphics

Here's a teaser clip to the new music video "film" we just shot for the launch of Apple Music. Shot this one with Weapon cameras, both the 6K variety and Jarred's very own Forged Carbon Fiber 8K Weapon as well... The cameras performed amazingly!

This was a massive undertaking and lots of moving parts going into it... More to come when the video drops on Apple Music on the 3rd... for now, enjoy the tease...

Thanks Christopher for posting this, is helping me out a lot study your work in detail and am trying to understand how you get so much "energy" into the camera.

I'm going shot per shot, edit per edit through your music video work trying to "get it". On a technical side, I'm attempting to get this energy with master primes anamorophics using 6k 3/2 at RC 4:1 and with arrow paralinx sending that realtime to prores. On the realtime editing path I am going paralinx_arrow->shogun->aja_ioxt->hp z840, and then looking at everything live through wirecast and nukex/studio. Is your realtime editing setup similar, any conceptual hints?

Also one thing I ponder looking at your shots is how it is decided to shoot with the person singing vs acting. So on the set do you have the music on loops blasting away, is the artist singing acappella, do you do double takes without singing, is the singing/not directed/spontaneous/communal - is it a mix of all these techniques based on the realtime feedback from what your getting on your editing system?

We played with the 8K a bit in anamorphic and the lenses DID cover, just the 35mm lens had the slightest darkening at the corners of the 8K anamorphic frame, but it DID add significantly to the effective wider focal length. I'll do some calculations in a bit to figure out just how much it increased it, but I'll tapping into that as soon as I go 8K full time for sure. This video has extensive visual effects/post work so with the current "Beta" state on the 8K camera and specifically post workflow, we decided not to shoot as much in full 8K as I would have dreamed for, but instead we used the camera as another 6K body as well.

There WAS a situation where the 8K camera already saved out butts, though. We were shooting some bluescreen in an airport hanger as a daylight cover set waiting for the onset of night to film our exterior work, and we had to fly Marshall from the ceiling and have a camera look straight up at him. Since anamorphic is a short format vertically, when we spun Marshall for a vfx element, his head and feet would get cut off even with our widest anamorphic lens, the 35mm Master anamorphic... The ceiling height dictated the distance we could get Marshall away from the camera (about 15 feet) and we couldn't get the camera any lower as it was already on a bag on the floor.

Jarred was gracious enough to have the awesome Nate Heartt (Red tech) and wizardly Dan Doran (Red DIT) come out and assist our shoot and as I was going through my mind of possible solutions to the situation I asked Nate if he had a Canon mount in his kit with him... He did! So if I could borrow a wide canon zoom from the "behind the scenes" guys, I could shoot the shot spherically in 8K and hold the entire body of Marshall... Turns out the director Rich Lee had his 24mm L lens with him and in 5 minutes, we solved the problem... NO OTHER camera in the world could have solved this situation, on the fly in a just a few minutes. Just sayin!

Thanks again to Nate and Dan for just being fucking awesome and sticking with us on our ALL-Night shoots! And to Jarred for making this one happen. Stay tuned, this will get nutty.

You mentioned a bit of corner darkening with the 35mm anamorphic lens on 8k, any vignetting at all with the Canon 24mm and 8k? Since you wanted all of Marshall in frame, did you use the full 8192 width of the sensor for the widest FOV? Can't wait to see how wide the 8k can go with the Canon 11-24. :)

Shot full frame 8K, no vignetting with the Canon 24mm L glass...

Chris, don't let that stuff get you down. It's annoying yes, but seriously what you contribute is far too important to let a few spoil the party.

I consider myself a fairly objective, positive, and friendly poster here on Reduser. Most people would never know this but I've been the victim of some heavy personal attacks via PM. It's not fun, but I justify being here because of the contributions from so many talented people like yourself. The world is full of people who feel compelled to cause trouble. I try to see right past them and seek out those who take a more positive path.
