  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC3 Wish list

Just in case anyone was interested, I found the Peltier/TEC effect is more suited to surface cooling than air cooling. As such, the volume of air required to pass through the DSMC2 type camera body was too much for a single 40mmx40mm 12v Peltier module (with a CPU heatsink & 120mm fan) to cool down effectively. Based on that example, I can't see a practical way to use the technology in a cooling module for the DSMC camera's.

Whatever DSMC3 brings, I hope it will be backwards compatible with DSMC2 accessories.

FWIW, I hope DSMC3 is too advanced for DSMC2 accessories. The earliest RED iterations had compromises that made upgrading the logical path for most RedUsers. The current DSMC2 ecosystem may not be perfect (what is) but, IMHO, it's robust enough to keep working for many years for most production styles. The DSMC3 will presumably expand potential use cases and offer welcome features many of us will want, count me in. That said, at this point in RED's development, I don't want to see them limit DSMC3 form factor options just to service the DSMC2 platform. It can stand alone.

Cheers - #19

I love these kind of threads. Reminds me of the days on dvxuser making a wishlist for the perfect camera. I hope DSMC3 has a 5G modem built in for wireless data transfers to the DIT and other devices. Maybe even wireless power charging if that’s possible too. Also want to see a “smarter” cinema camera built overall for tracking and real-time VFX purposes. Oh and 120FPS @ 8KFF, 500FPS @ 4KFF please!

1) internal FSND 0.6, 1.2, 1.8
2) Canon/Sony autofocus (I know I know cinema cameras don't use autofocus, but RED is used for small/personal projects where autofocus is crucial)
3) faster boot time and no black shading
4) even lighter body
5) 6K FF @ 200fps 8:1 compression

In this order :)
2020 is coming guys :)

RED won't be doing internal NDs. However, the option to have AF is a very good idea. There are problems with phase detection AF, which is why Leica and Panasonic don't have that. Unfortunately, it's the only way to ensure fast AF that goes in the correct direction to start with.

Photographers don't need phase detection, ironically - but they do need speed and accuracy, and cameras like the Sony A9 combine PD with contrast detection to produce the world's best sports camera (perhaps the Olympus E-M1 X can match it, but that's another story). What makes the A9 a great sports camera is the basis for what cinema cameras need.

DSMC2 form factor and module compatibility
Low light improvements

Yes would stink if the rear modules and mounts where all different.

I would like to so gyro data being more implemented. GoPro7 style. To remove rolling shutter and even possible to smooth out roll and pan tilt moves in post. If red implemented such features into their STK they would win. Think that would really be a good selling point for harvesting 8k+ resolution. And gimbals would go completely out of fashion :)

I honestly don’t think the modules will carry over.

After switching over to shooting 8k I feel Im not so tempted to go back to 6k. But I have not experinced the new Gemini's 5k. Maby its as crisp as the 8k...
I agree, there got to be a flavor of red with internal nd and autofocus like the new sony cameras. Autofocus at this level would be very useful. I like to se 7k at 120p and 8k at 100. The epic mx was truely epic when in came out with its 96fps at 5k and the 120 at 4k. I do miss the 120fps when croping down one k.

The gyro data Björn is talking about I sincerly hope comes already in dsmc2 as it was in already in the epic mx. Its been a big let down that we have not seen any use of this information yet.

To summ it up, I like to se a version that is talored more for one operator than a larger team. Perhaps even a couple of full size xlr on it aswell or atleast a slim module at launch. Its been som many flavors of red cameras, so why not try to make one more solo shooter friendly.

Next sensor needs to be faster if not global shutter.

Looking forward to se the NLE's picking up the new Nvidia+RED SDK!!! Its with out doubt the best news in a loooong time.

Yes auto focus would be great dont understand why its not already there. The tech is there, speaking to Ef lenses and such seams "easy enough" for red to just pay their way into any of the good patents for autofocus. but I guess Sony and them really dont want red to have it.

The "cinema cameras does not use auto focus"... lot of that is due to its not being exsitant. I think I would use it quite a bit if there was a good working such function... like any Sony handy cam has today. Like running around on steady cam following someone etc. So many times it would do better with autofocus then when trying to have a AC dial it in by hand.

1-stapless internal ND
2-more silent fan
3-And i like the "you can only rentall RED" with the Monstro sensor :)

personally dreaming of a documentary / independent camera easy to use on the shoulder with a much lower sensor position, thin design, integrated shoulder mount, low center of gravity, well balanced with most of the weight sent to the back to leave just the lens and a perfectly located evf in between the cameraman and the subject... would not mind it being lightweight like a 'cat on the shoulder' with a smart wooden handle too...

- Autofocus like Sony/Canon
- Internal NDs
- Higher frame rates at 8K or at least allow to shoot at lower Ks by resizing and not cropping.
-More mounts option (Sony E mount, Canon R etc...)
- Better Balance for shoulder mount work

Ha ha! Yes...to function like a RED with the form of an Aaton! :))

- Good built in audio (as good or close to audio recorders such as h4n etc)
- Dslr like snappy 1:1 magnification
- Frame rate bump (6k 120fps would be satisfactory for me)
- Better compression ratios when filming high framerates (faster ssd tech should allow for this)
- Smaller + lighter body
- Updated Ui/Snappier
- Non proprietary SSD
- Built in ND or module
- Sub 10 second boot
- 6k FF sensor
- Improved black shade
- Improved long shutter noise/hotpixels.... would love to oneday be able to use a RED as a timelapse camera but i understand without a physical shutter this might not ever happen
- Smooth spinning knob built in side handle for accurate lens focus control
- Better RED batteries that dont lose capacity so quick
- Improved low light performance and DR
- Varispeed audio built into R3D file
- More project time base options.... Would love the ability to record in 120fps, playback in realtime with audio in camera, then be able to change playback speed to 0.5 or 0.25x for slow motion viewing

I like so so many of your suggestions.

Please let's have at least: Built in ND or module, Dslr like snappy 1:1 magnification, Sub 10 second boot and Varispeed audio built into R3D file !!!

gonna shoot for the moon here.. several dsmc3 brains i'd go for..

1. 65mm 12k, no bigger than R1, color and mono
2. VV 10k, current brain size, color and mono
3. VV 8k, 1000fps, color and mono

universal additions..
less compression at higher fps
better motion mount

It needs to output 1:1 for focus on one monitor and fullscreen on another. I wish I never had to punch to 1:1 but rather had a second monitor wich always showed 1:1. Letting a monitor zoom the 1080 signal is not a good solution.
