  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2 Side Handle

It looks like the side handle doesn't rotate? So how does it feel when holding at waist height and looking down on the camera?

Also is there an up to date list of supported lenses that can be driven by the electronic focus? There was a thread in 2012 with a list of lenses, EF ones, but that is perhaps well out of date. I'm thinking of the newer sigma art ranges and so on?

I'm traditionally all manual but this offers some interesting possibilities.

I initially was concerned about the fixed handle as a handheld operator. However, it had the opposite effect. The mix of functionality and sturdiness really opened up the option for handheld use. Before the handle, I felt way more comfortable with this camera on sticks, which is completely out of character for me. The side handle has some preset hot keys which I didn't even need to swap. Perfect setup.

The lens control varies lens to lens, but like you said, I see that as more of a bonus, then a necessity. One note, the Global dynamics lens, which I was questioning if I should of bought it before the side handle, is now a go to lens for handheld.
 
Ergonomics look great on this handle, and it seems like it's sales like hot cakes!

For me, I really liked the screen on the old handle, and some more configurable buttons, especially the screen, Now I read this handle doesn't work with the sidekick either, so there is basically no way of not using the touch screen LCD to see info, correct?

Would be cool to see an upgraded version with a small screen and maybe the ability to rotate the handle, anyone feeling/wanting the same? another option is maybe to create a fusion between a sidekick and the side handle?
 
Hi Oron, you can do everything with the sidehandle on the menu, it works like the sidekick .

Hi Filpe, thanks, I know you can control everything from the handle, but on the sidekick you have a screen so you don't have to look at the LCD touch screen, on the old handle you also had a screen and from what I can tell you also had more programable buttons? Would also be nice to have the option to rotate it.

what I'm saying is, this model is great, but would be great if RED could offer a model with a screen and an option to rotate, I'm sure some will be willing to pay a bit extra for that.
 
The side handle is truly amazing... like way better than I thought it would be! I was like... yeah, I don't know...

But then when I got it and tried it out... :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: amazing!

I barely use the touch screen menu anymore... so much easier and WAY faster to navigate everything with the side handle! And the ergonomics of it are soooo nice. I didn't think I would like it this much. But I like it more everyday.

This is the only thing holding me back from this purchase... I love having hot swap ability and will miss it with DSMC2. I asked Jarred about it when this was first announced and he hinted there were some third party solutions (side handles with batteries) in development. But I haven't heard rumors or teases of any yet...

The ergonomics far out way the hot swap capability. You can hot swap other ways.

I have to say that the new Side Handle exceeded my expectations by far in all fronts... Except the battery thing, but you can't have it all can you?

I carried the Helium walking around for a long while and the Grip felt very well crafted, and yes you can feel the difference in weight with the Wooden Grip for GDU, it's way lither and while gives ahed and distinct dry feel in your hand, vs the softer feel of the Rubber one, it just fills perfect, and while I still some how prefer the rubberized grip in many situations, the wooden grip looks also very classy... :)


The controls on the Handle are very responsive, and very well placed, the Focus wheel is fast and smooth, and focusing any electronic lens is a beauty... Love this thing!!

Yeah, Ketch, that wooden handle is a beauty. Can't wait to get one :)
 
This is meant to be light and helpful... Ketch, the word is FEEL not FILL. I think you've misspelled that word for as long as I have been reading your posts... :) I know the Italian letter "i" has an "ee" sound to it... so it's an easy mistake.

Ha ha... And certainly not the only word I have been misspelling my all life either... :)

Has anyone had any problems getting the side handle focus wheel to work with the GDU 24mm on Epic-W? Or am I missing a basic step in getting the focus wheel operational? Thanks!
 
You can remap the focus controls to the handle again sometimes if your defaults have changed it won't activate. You do that key mapping in the settings menu.

Still mot working after re-initializing the lens per the ops guide instructions. I can see the camera remapping the focus points, but the wheel still doesn't work. I also performed a factory reset, still no go. Time to send in a log file or is there more troubleshooting I can try? Thanks!

Any time Andrew,

Have you tried dismounting both the Side Handle and lens and remounting?
