  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2 Beta Build v6.4.17 / IPP2 / April Shipment Update

Graeme, is this new demosaic also for epic dragon footage? Is this a automatic background thing or one has to choose it? Also , what about the debayer algorithms like lanczos3 or Mitchell, what is the best option to pair it with ?

Answers and I'm not Graeme, but:

Yes it works with Dragon footage and is "automatic in the background", though I do see some validity to a preferences setting.

Lanczos3 and all that are not Debayer algorithms, those are Scaling algorithms. Meaning those are two different things. i.e. going from 8K to 4K.

The best combination will be completely up to you and how you like your footage to look.

Is there really going to be 8k vistavison sized helium sensor in near future?
Or the large format lenses doesn't need helium type sensors
For low noise floor and complicated colour fidelity
Next film I am seriously considering
With Leica Thalia my only option left
For an Indian epic movie where we can't afford a panavision or alexa 65
I really don't want to miss the IPP2 workflow
Advice pls?
Right now I am really happy with weapon helium 8k with
Otus primes and zeiss zooms

Graeme,

Thanks for all of your very hard work, and I love the new IPP2 Luts, Especially the "Rolloff 3" and "Rolloff 4" cubes.

It's a little weird that Red's pinnacle camera the VistaVision Dragon will not be able to fully utilize IPP2. Midway through a project so can't change the camera at the moment but what specifically can Heluim Cameras do with IPP2 that Dragon cameras can not do?

firmware license maybe ? or hardware upgrade more likely right?

It's a hardware thing. I hope RED never goes the software license route. It doesn't seem to be part of their DNA thankfully.

Otus will work on the 8K VV, but if cost is your concern on such a project the Thalia glass might out of reach for you as well. Slightly less expensive than Summilux-Cs, but not by much.

Same thoughts, and I voiced this concern a bit ago. We'll see what RED has up their sleeves on this front. Remember this is all beta and very early days regarding much of this. My bigger concern is DSMC2 cameras that physically feature different workflows being used on sets. Not a big deal for those who are fluent in the RED ecosystem, but a problem for general production.

Again, early days. Fingers crossed on many fronts to see what's possible.

I do hope that Red reconsiders IPP2 in camera for VV. its a one-off special case that uses older sensor tech but is their top end camera. Especially when VV is considered an upgrade for the 8K Helium based cameras.

At the end of the day, we get IPP2 it in post, which is what matters most of all. More than anything, I really hope they get A.D.D. working with 8K, and in the SDK.

I really do like the new workflow in RCX. I don't use RCX normally, but I have to use until there is a new SDK so may favorite apps can support it. The new debayer quality is my favorite part of IPP2, but the improved color with the tone / gamut mapping is a close second. For most, I suspect the tone / gamut mapping is the best part of IPP2. It eliminates the out of gamut, clipped, colors like blue LEDs.

For those obsessed with making their Red camera look like an Alexa, you should get ColorFront Transkoder. It will do just that. Once they get the new SDK, I can't wait to see what they do with it. IMO, they have the best tone / gamut mapping for HDR. Possibly second, only to Dolby. They can take a source file and output both SDR and HDR that are the best in class of each. Hands down, best piece of image processing software on the market.

Will the Post>Look>Effects return (with alchemy, unsharp, high pass sharpening, 1D & 3D LUTs, Levels, etc)?

New demosaic is automatic and for all R3D footage. As for downsample algorithms - no special guidance - experiment to see what you like best for your footage.

Thanks! Glad you enjoy the softer roll-offs.

In Helium cameras, where IPP2 is applied in camera, does this new demosaic apply to ProRes output or only R3D -- is there any change in the ProRes files?

New demosaic is only in REDCine-X and SDK - not in camera, which remains the same.

Thanks Graeme, that is what I thought. Another good reason to shoot R3D files. Looking forward to new SDK for FCP X.

Any update of the Scarlet-W to Epic-W upgrade. Still no news from my october 11 order.

Brent had noted a few times earlier that all upgrades are in progress, but they're load balancing between all of them.
