  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon....

Stop emptying my bank account Jarred. LOL.
No kidding, John...I'm with you! I keep telling my wife that I only need a few more things from RED, lol...

something new :)

Nice. I never got one of these originally because I wanted it to adjust depending on the size and weight of the lens I was using. Looking forward to this new one. And the XL module... hows that coming along Jarred?

Looks like some other folks are getting to see Dragon too.

Dope ...we may need an Actors about RED thread

Great pix Phil, good to see the Dragon out in the wild!

Are any of Probst-shot .r3ds going to be circulating soon? 'Cause now it just feels like you're taunting us.

Bet they want the color science just so before the public gets an unveiling...

Ted Handle?

I think because Ted had the Outrigger handle Out in the wild 1st and was calling it the "Ted Handle" :) I do Like the new one with handles on both side's Now when is it shipping? :)

He he exactly... , Even so the first time I sow and tucked one on hand was on Stage 4 at RSH, the one in your camera, but every one knows it as the "Ted Handle"... ;)

I really like it a lot, but some times I had to unmount it and re-m,noted, and I use not 2 but 4 Bolts, just because I am a freak of safety... ;)

But with this new design, I know it will be so much better, and with a quick twist bingo, you are now in the position you want, and again and again, no more screw in and screw out bolts, to change positions of the handle on the spot, great brilliant idea really!!

Oh, and yes, I do agree with Brett, having the Handles on both sides will prove to be a great option many times over, and with the capacity to twist in place finding the perfect Balance in seconds... just PERFECT!!

Lol.. thats funny.

Holy crap Ryan Gosling has 3 hands! I knew there was something up with that guy!
I am sad to burst your Gosling bubble, but on some productions a person is hired to take care of the focusing of the image. It is the hand of the, so called, focuspuller, you have wrongly identified as Goslings third hand.

You guys start fucking with our logos... and its not going to end well.

Phil,
How did that red pro prime perform on dragon? Highest resolution w/ no vignette?

The 50mm Red Pro Prime covers 6K Full just fine, although I'd love to test out more glass on Dragon.

I have many thoughts on coverage, resolution, and format in regards to Dragon. In the last few months I've been taking measurements off of many lenses to estimate their coverage capabilities, however, I'm hesitant to publish the information until I actually mount a lens on Dragon because that will tell the real story on it's performance.

However, let dive into some theory on this subject.

Generally speaking I believe on most modern prime sets you're going to be good on coverage from about 32/35mm and longer for 6K full. However, some of those are close.

That said for 6K UHD I'm betting you'll be safe with lens sets that cover the full Mysterium-X 5K sensor.

An interesting format in the middle there would be approximately 5.5K which would be the same physical size as the Mysterium-X sensor at 5K.

Dragon itself at 5K is pretty much S35 3-perf and all S35 lenses should cover that safely (which is something many DPs actually want).

That's where the real magic is with Dragon in my opinion. It's sort of a multi-tasker when it comes to sensor size/format size and finishing for 4K. Optically speaking, some lenses that cover 6K are going to be "weird" or soft in the corners encroaching on being funky in what we'd call "field" coverage on 6K as well. Some however will be just fine. There may be advantages to shooting at a lower resolution to be in the sweeter resolving area for some glass. Just depends.

I know personally I'll be shooting a lot at 6K Full, 6K HD, 5.5K, and 5K.

Whatever format and resolution you choose just keep in mind that Dragon at 5K with it's lower noise floor, increased dynamic range, and smaller pixel size is going to produce a great 4K finish. Any resolution above that and you'll see distinct advantages to the "super sampling" concept when scaling the images down to 4K. Which will be amazing.

Additionally, and this is all theory until I truly test it out, shooting at 4K and scaling up from say 3K should look just as good or slightly better than Mysterium-X today at those same resolutions.

Great pix Phil, good to see the Dragon out in the wild!

Nice, thanks for sharing Phil.

Anytime guys. Really happy to get my hands on this beast and be there to document that action. Can't wait to do some more shooting with it. It's got me hungry for more.

Great News, I was worried about my RPP 50mm - which is my go to lens recently (it really is a great lens for motion control shoots and has a excellent feel on the monochrome at T1.8). I have had to stop using my 18mm rpp on my monochrome at 5k, it was a great lens at 4k for my scarlet though. I'm hoping the 35mm RPP will sneak in there and work fine on the dragon.

Is done.

Dragon will likely win the award for the most suitable name ever given to a product. Its been quite the beast to tame, with quite a few fires started along the way.

Hello Jarred,

I couldn't help but think of the irony that you are the Fire Chief,
yet this is one Fire that you do not want to put out.

:)

I await the greatest technological cinematograhic event in
human history....and yes, I mean the Red Dragon.
