Do you guys have any tips for a clapper loader working on a film being shot with the RED One?

Also, what sort of info should a good camera log sheet contain? Do any of you clapper loaders out there have a camera log sheet template that you're willing to share?

And another question...

We'll be shooting with multiple 16GB CF cards. What would be the most efficient and organised method of backing up the footage on set while also acting as clapper loader?

If you have enough 16GB cards for a full days shoot (probably at least around 10 cards for a single camera on a drama shoot at a guess) without re-formatting, then Pre-format every card before each day's shoot and pre-label. This avoids even the short delay when formatting CF media and eliminates any errors in Roll numbers. Use two Firewire 800 UDMA CF reader to back up to at least two eSATA backup drives using R3D Data Manager. Alternate your two CF readers to avoid overheating issues causing corrupt copies, and have spare Firewire 800 and eSATA cables too.

I recommend you buy a RED Station CF Reader. Experience has proved that the cheaper card readers do overheat (it's happened to me, and it ain't pretty) and FAIL, causing corrupt data. I've used the RED Station on a feature, and not one problem, also it's been used on Pirates with the same results. Even with 10 cards you will have to reformat at some point during the day, but at least you'll have time to QC your footage before you reuse the card. Pre-formatting is good, and I use R3D Data Manager for that. Also use R3D Data Manager to keep you safe on your backups, DON'T DRAG N' DROP!!

If you can buy or access the Red Station CF reader then that is indeed a better option. Note that the R3D Data Manager is a "dumb" reformat - ie it reformats using the same formatting that exists on the card. If Red ever changes the media formatting during a camera firmware upgrade, but you use a card formatted on a previous firmware camera there is a small chance that the formatting may be incompatible. So to be absolutely sure, the first format on the media before shooting on this film should be done on the camera and not via R3D Data Manager.

does anyone have a good source for 3 copy camera reports? Used to fill up every time I went to technicolor etc but now that so many projects skip the usual big rental/ post houses my supplies have run out! Anyone work for a lab that could hook me up? or somewhere I can buy them

Hey Shawn,

I was interested in getting my hands on that report, but the link doesn't seem to work. Do you think they took it down??
