  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

Speculation: Red Dragon fulfillment wasn't fast enough. As a result, no money was coming in. So in order to lock in that money they created a working prototype called "weapon". Weapon would probably be out to market in early 2017 for early adopters who will pay a premium. Late 2017/early 2018 for the general public.

Actually early adopters will get a nice price break. So I understand anyway.

Phil Holland had confirmed Red has said the existing exchangeable OPLFs will work with the Weapon. I assume this statement ends the speculation of a larger Dragon sensor?

I dunno, could there be different OLPFs for different size sensor windows? Is this possible?

Nope.

And I'll quote myself. Red has been working hard on Weapon and for a while.

Weapon is happening this year and as long as the upgrade path lasts.

I'd like to place a small bet on a shorter flange depth. A shim would make current mounts work. Remove it, and add a metabones speed booster-style adapter, or other mounts. Fits with what Jarred has said about current mounts working, and shorter body length.

+1 . Hopefully brings compatibility to full Leica (still) M lens line-up!

CFAST 2.0 media scales up to MINI-MAG capacities and is competitive price-wise. Red has stated that there will likely be a smaller around 256GB MINI-MAG to assist with that exact transition. Not to mention there is going to be another "helper" in there as well.

Personally I don't see a huge need for something smaller like 64GB or 128GB at this point when handling 4K+, but we'll see what Red produces.

I'm definitely interested in seeing what they produce and how competitive it will be price-wise. The price of this stuff is coming down drastically and proprietary is getting to be a tough ask IMO.

When Jarred said that, rather carefully I thought, my mind immediately slipped back to Red's project (which has been very quiet for three years or more) to design their own electronic mount for their own electronic ?AF? cine lenses.

I asked Jim about that specifically, in a public Q&A at a REDucation back then, and he confirmed it, and added that it was a new mount design, not a PL retrofitted with additional electrical connections.

Internal rotating ND Filters like the F55 would be my #1 outside of any new hot specs.

2 steps forward, 1 step back

I might refer to the camera body being changed. They push technology 2 steps and take 1 step back and rework the design.

I'm betting that there's no real way to answer this question at the moment as nothing is in motion yet illuminating demand.

However, I'm betting that the Dragon to Weapon Upgrades will happen a bit smoother than say some of the MX to Dragon Upgrades in the past. Red has made a lot of changes in the last couple years.

Oh you're scaring me Phil! One major reservation about the Dragon upgrade is that Scarlet #0123 is in good working order! I want to put this off as long as I can, LOL! What typically GOES WRONG in the MX to Dragon upgrade?

It's the adapter for current monitors to function with the mini lemo ports on Weapon. Hence the "2 steps forward, one step back" comment from Jarred.

I was hoping they would be able to make a cable for this. One end with the old connector and the other end with the new one.

I was hoping for that as well. Much more convenient than having to add on an adapter. I'm sure a third party will do that if RED doesn't.

Lol, I dont know about that. Would seem a little ridiculous if that's just an adaptor for the current monitors...

Nothing to be scared of at all. As reported here on Reduser by several folks at Red and not at Red when the large influx of upgrades was happening there were a few delays. Usually adding a bit of time to the upgrade process. Most upgrades from what I've seen happen in the 5-10 business day window though. There's been a few that took longer due to the larger queue, parts supply, or other chaos.

Not the end of the world.

Nothing so dramatic as end of the world, LOL!

However, I do have this secret fantasy that some day Scarlet #0123 may be referred to (in whispers!) as "THE LAST DRAGON!"

Looking forward to hearing more on WEAPON too!

I'm probably in an extreme minority but when it comes time to start the Weapon upgrades, I hope there are delays.

Reason is because in the past, upgrade delays often meant they figured out something better and instead of waiting until the next version comes out before implementing the improvement, they chose to delay delivery so they could get the best version out to the customer.
