  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

Yes indeed... but that actual number depends on how many do it.. and we wont know exactly till NAB, which is how the whole "if you upgrade to Dragon before NAB we are giving you an extra extra credit" came from. If enough people get their upgrade in before NAB then the lines will be busy enough that the extra credit will likely be close to what the price increase was. We save money you save money. How's that for transparency?

Hold on hold on hold on

What are you saying actually? If I order my Dragon upgrade now, I pay the full $12500 price. But if enough people get their upgrades before NAB, we get money back into our accounts or is that money being put into the reduced price for Weapon?

Also, if we upgrade to Dragon before NAB, will we have like a "ticket of discount" that will be available to us whenever we decide to go Weapon?

I'm also curious if it's better to just pay the upgrade but don't send in the camera and if Weapon is affordable when released, send in the MX to get it Weaponized directly instead of going Dragon and sending it in one more time just days after the Dragon arrived?

Jeeze guys, quit assuming the worst. He posted a picture of a new I/O module. I think it's fair to assume that this camera will give you the ability to backup in realtime using the Weapon I/O. I don't think many will need more than two mags if that is the case.

And nobody is forcing anyone... Epic is an awesome camera. The RED ONE is an awesome camera. You can keep whatever camera and be happy and shoot awesome images that are best in the world just like you did last week before you guys knew weapon existed.

i haven't been around for quite a time now, but I wanted to chime in just to say that I'm always grateful to RED for the RED ONE. I didn't get the RED ONE M-X upgrade path 'cause I didn't have the money. I save money and could take the Stage 2 EPIC-X upgrade path, keeping my beloved original RED ONE and getting a new camera for a really good price (who does that??? 2 cameras for the price of 1 and a quarter...). I couldn't invest in a Dragon upgrade and, so I won't be able to upgrade to Weapon... Ok, who cares? I mean, I still remember watching the "Crossing the line" trailer and getting blown away because, at last, someone did it: not a video camera but the first Digital Cinema Camera. And it was affordable!!!! I was in at that exact moment.

Some months ago I did a shot. We were talking camera options and, finally, we decided to use the original RED ONE Mysterium sensor over the EPIC for it's unique qualities. I love that camera! It has never let me down and so I won't never let it down. I've shoot a couple of series, music videos, features, docs, etc. with it, and so with the EPIC-X.

I think that what I'm trying to say is that the original RED ONE is as good for today filmmaking as it was in 2008. RED did this, they created the first equivalent to Digital Negative. Ask DoPs, and everybody would love that Kodak and the disappeared Fuji would have always kept all their negative stocks but monetary reasons only allow for the last two generations (Vision 2 and Vision 3, for example), but the films shoot with the first Eastman Color negatives are still as good today as they were 70 or so years ago and are still as good as todays negatives (they just involved a little more work to get them right).

I know there's a trend to always have the latest technology, I too have mixed feeling every time when I see an announcement like this. But you know what? I turn around and pick one of my CINEMA Cameras (read this again, please: 2 Cinema Cameras on my table... awesome), turn it on and smile. :)

Cheers!

lol maybe the upgrade is faster CARD readers

The USB3 works great. The regular one, with esata to USB3 adapter works great too.
125mo per seconds on my 5 disks raid drives. Of course, it could be better, but the bottleneck would be hard drives thmselves. Not the reader.

Thanks again for the change to upgrade again!! I started with the original RED ONE and followed every upgrade part and i'm still very happy with RED and what kind of work came to me! Having the mini mags is great. I sometimes shoot Life shows and have a take of 1 hour and more. Never had any problem!! Love to see a faster cardreader, with also thunderbolt connection on it next to USB 3. !!

New Showreel on www.camlight.nl (all RED)

best regards

Personally I would take a medium format dragon with a little set of shitty 100USD per lens medium format lenses straight from ebay before a normal dragon with a full set of master primes, but maybe that's just me. The trick question is how to find good anamorphic's for that format, I read Hawks is only going to rent out their sets.

Guess the medium format is not happening right now, but the idea is so interesting that I bought a set of Mamiya 645 glass today, so I'll be ready for when somone gives me the opportunity to use them :)

would super cool if RED came out with a system which does not need a computer - plug yer hardrive and cards to it and it backs it up . plus it runs on portable vmounts. that would be awesome.

I think people forget that most of those following the upgrade path, have yet to pay more than an alexa for the bodies we've had....

R1: 17.500
Epic: 9.500 (I think, when I kept the R1)
Dragon: 10.000
Weapon: Who knows? :)

One Alexa body frim 7 years ago ? 3 red's updated until now for the same price.... Not bad!! But Alexa was not there 7 years ago and stil not 4K until now :-)

(standing ovation) - I really hope you catch how massive support there is for your stance. Critique is so much easier to word than positiveness.

Lets not forget the difference between "announcement" time and "delivery" time.

This is spot on... and it's not even been announced yet. You are getting a heads up exactly so you all have advance warning and can make your choices.

I hope there will be a Scarlet Weapon and not only one Weapon flavor. The Scarlet is the true Red indie camera for no budget projects. 20k for an upgrade would be too expensive for the scarlet crowd I guess.

I don't think there will be a scarlet weapon, just the ability to upgrade scarlet dragon to weapon

Lets see Oscars winners

Were they nominated Because they were shot with a certain camera? Geez no wonder people prefer cameras over good story, direction, etc...

Such an odd argument to make. Just because Mercedes dominated the F1 races, doesn't make me root for them over Ferrari, or make me believe that Alonso is much better than Ricciardo as a driver.

Cameras are tools... and the Alexa is a beautiful tool... and something I will never be able to afford, and frankly I don't really want to. I'm happy with RED. Oscars or not. It will be my job to convince my client that a camera doesn't make the cinematographer.

Well, the weapon seems to be a rehousing. They will receive epics and weaponize them. It would make more sens to do the same for Scarlet than taking a new dragon brain and weaponize it for scarlet dragon users.
