  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

upgrade

upgrade

Can I make a suggestion, without offending anyone?

I realize that you recently ended the discounted upgrade path from Epic MX to Epic dragon. I'm also going to assume you still make a profit at the discounted rate. Seeing as everyone who has signed up to the Red family (I much agree with the family analogy presented earlier - good and bad- we're all in it together) signed up with the idea that you weren't buying a camera, but a system and continual upgrade path. Why not bring back the discounted mx to dragon upgrade price? It's only for a couple more months and I'm sure anyone who was late on it, but still wants to have the option to upgrade would be extremely appreciated. I don't think you'd be alienating any existing customers or "screwing over" anybody who already got the discount. You'd simply be extending it as a show of good faith and to help your loyal customers who by into your philosophy and don't just want a camera, but an ever evolving machine.... a weapon if you will.

I think people would really appreciate it.

Just my 2 cents.

It's not a bad suggestion but wasn't there ample time on this? Tons of warning as well? It would almost be too generous of them and then they would have to break on every similar request from now on.

Just trying to play devils advocate :) I see your point.

Please dont make this camera medium format! If red has intention to make medium format cinema camera why not make it rental only.
What we are gonna do with current best cine lenses? Dump into trash can? Everybody wants bigger thats cool but i suppose only %5 of owners would own medium format lenses.Even not quarter of Epic owners dont have PL glass.

You look at it the wrong way. if it´s a medium format camera, you can buy more pl glass for less. I for sure would love a medium format skull dragon and would be happy to sell every lens I have to get it.

Dude, if you don't want a medium format camera there is a MUCH simpler solution than RED not making one.

Don't buy it. That seems like the most logical move to me.

Don't worry dude, here is what Jarred said about glasses :

"Your current mount will work on Weapon when you are using S35 and full frame lenses."

@Luke: your comment killed me.. Ahaha!

This.

PLUS... Jarred has mentioned that you can still use your current PL mount. I would imagine this means you're shooting a windowed portion of the sensor. ...OPTIONS BABY!!!

EDIT: ...OPTIONS... .. ...DUDE!!!

There was tons of time for people to make the upgrade at that rate. !00% agreed. I just don't think it was ever in anyone's sights that if they didn't they would be stuck in a dead end path with no way to upgrade. My thoughts are why not offer it for another limited time offer? Who's it going to hurt and it will probably make a few folks very happy. I think that's why I was suggesting the olive branch. I'll see your devil's advocate and raise you one :)

For less? First 65mm Digital Cinema camera out and nothing changed.if do you think weapon would affect cine glass prices in future i would pay your pl glass half price next year.
I just dont believe medium format is for the masses.sure im gonna upgrade it too but what else? Dont own or intend to buy medium photo glass in future.
It takes time and money adapt those glass to cine version and even after that its still not cinema glass.
@Luke sorry dude i already own Dragon and %100 upgrade to whatever the next one is.Red ecosystem :)

Also, I thought the $3k price increase was because upgrades were slowing down, so they didn't need to commit as many workers to the upgrade line. Yet, it sounds like RED is all set with helping hands for the wave of Weapon upgrades?

So sell your stuff third party. I don't get this reliance on the upgrade path and assuming it's the only way to get the camera. Upgrade your current shit, sell your current shit, or buy the new shit. If you can't afford either of those this is not REDs problem to deal with.

I get the sense people view the upgrade path as a way to get HUGE savings when it's ultimately a way to get new tech early without paying a huge premium. If you want to be at the edge of tech it usually costs MORE to be first in line

Super excited for this!

Blair, love the suggestion of a discount on the media as part of the upgrade - helps ease the pain.

Either way this is amazing. Thanks for letting us in on it Jarred!

Yeah, totally the wrong way to look at it.

And...

If RED is really going MF and isn't ditching the concept of offering two cameras, EPIC and Scarlet, then there could be Scarlet with cropped modes for motion, FF35 maybe, and MF for stills. ;)

But i agree with you Björn, this time i would probably try to sell everything if it brings me up to MF.

Just dreaming a little here.

Where is my time-machine? Doc?

I think even if the sensor is medium format sized you will still be able to scale down to S35. I'm imagining 8k (or whatever K) for full sensor 645 or 6x7, but you will still be able to scale the sensor to 6k/5k and get the same S35 image circle we know on Dragon, but with way higher frame rates. I believe Panavision is doing something similar with their 70/65mm digital camera.

But my point is...sell your stuff third party and just buy in. The market is great for used RED stuff. Honestly it's one of the most underrated things about owning RED.

The upgrade path simply gets you first dibs at a nice little discount. Its not like its a "break the bank" savings though...
