  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

WTB: ARRI ULTRA PRIMES

Hi,

Just book it with Arri as I have done....right now there are no used sets available worldwide...
If you get any info let me know also
Thanks
Harcharan

I just a couple days ago missed out on a set unfortunately, but they Metric anyway so not a big disappointment. I am noticing that used prices are only fetching around 5% less than new though which is disturbing!

IMHO, Ultra Primes are the best glass for the EPIC -- sharp, light, great markings and perfectly color-matched across the board.

+1 on that! I'd love to find a 40mm and 180mm LDS Ultra to complete my set!

Agree that you should order a new set. Abel Cine in NYC is a good place to go. Ask for Steve Cohen.

Used Ultras are next to impossible to find.

Pieter,
I am shooting an FX job on the Epic and the director is concerned that the Ultra Primes are not sharp enough and wants Master Primes, which will strain the budget. I noticed you were raving about the Ultras. Any thoughts. Also, stupid question, but it will cover the 5k sensor, right? I have heard that there was some edge softness on the wider primes.
Thanks,
Robb

I have a 10 lens set from 16-135. We haven't noticed vignetting on the 16mm shooting 5K 2:1 on practical applications. And we use that lens quite a bit in 5K, but we haven't done any bench testing to check on edge softness.

Check out Dulcos's Image Circle Database.

http://web.me.com/ducloslenses/DataRef/ImgCir.html

S235 sensor (EPIC at 5K) = 33.54mm

The 16mm Ultraprime is 33mm. Below 16 you will see probably see some vignetting.

Masters may have higher MTBF specs... and are technically sharper, but I would challenge anyone looking at an image to say the Masters are noticeably sharper than an Ultra. Faster (T1.3 vs 1.9). But a lot more expensive, larger and heavier. That said, if you want the best Zeiss Glass, shoot a Master. But like you said, you pay a price.

Good luck!

BTW, anyone interested in a 28mm LDS 28mm Ultra?

I'm considering selling it so I can get a 40mm instead.

S35 sensor (EPIC at 5K) = 33.54mm

The 16mm Ultraprime is 33mm. Below 16 you will see probably see some vignetting.

Image circle of 5120x2700 (currently maximum possible recording resolution on epic) is 31.256 mm not the 33.54 as You said.

Ultra Prime 16mm has vignetting because of old lens design.

Ultra Primes cover 5K

Ultra Primes cover 5K

Absolutely no coverage issues with 16mm at 5K.
Corner to corner sharpness. Gorgeous as with the other UPs.

These lenses are sharp light and fast.

The only other lenses to compete with them in all categories are the Leica Summilux PL lenses but at twice the price.

There's a reason there are no used sets around and 6-12 month wait for new.

Best.
Pieter.

Peter is correct. The Zeiss Ultra's are the best lens at the best prices available today (albiet very slowly available). From Master primes, to Cooke's, and Leica's.... all the "top shelf" cine lenses are 18-22k each, even 1970's designed Super speeds fetch 9k when pristine. The 12k price tag on most Ultra's is a steal by comparison.

Hi
Never had a problem with the 16mm on 5K, and no, I won't sell my set, I need another one myself since they are almost always out on rentals and I never get to use them myself. So if anyone has a set to sell contact me as well.

Ron

Ultra Primes too soft? That's a new one.

I saw this on FJS International: $67k for: SET OF 5 ULTRA PRIMES LENSES T1.9 Near pristine condition
16mm, 24mm, 32mm, 50mm, 85mm - Metric

Phillip,

According to Red's own data sheet it lists coverage as follows: 27.7mm (h) x 14.6mm (v) x 31.4 mm (d)

I was going off of Duclos' data sheet, which states 33.54 for S35. I happen to have a lot of trust in Duclos and their knowledge of lenses.

That said, based on either your number or RED's, the Ultra 15mm MORE than covers the image circle. In other words, it doesn't vignette. Which is what I experience.

Unless you have that lens and I have looked at it with an Epic at 5K, I would be careful about making claims that it vignettes. Or that it is "Old" design for that matter.
