Hey guys,

Quick question, Will any V mount charger work for any v mount battery or are they brand specific. Sorry for the noob question but I come from the DSLR world. I'm looking at wooden cameras battery back system and want to go with the new Switronix v mounts that communicate with the camera but their only charger option is a 4 bay $1200 unit and I dont need that. I just need a 2 bay max. Thanks Guys!

Check out globalmediapro. Discounted batteries that many people here including myself use. These batteries are designed for the red camera so it communicates battery usage info. They also sell chargers pretty cheap. $165. The charger takes awhile, but it's small and very lightweight and for $1200 you can get 3 x 160wh batteries and a 2 channel charger.

Batteries:

PS- I also use the wooden camera quick back and switronix mount solution.

Thanks Mike! So would it be fair to say their chargers would also charge the switronix v mounts as well? Seems to me it would if you use your globalmediapro batts on the wooden camera quickback/switronix mount. I love the pricing on their chargers.

Hi Matt,

No, GMP specifically advises NOT to use their chargers with different batteries, IDX sony and the like.

I have the exact same set up as Mike. (Mike or anyone else, how long have you been using this combo successfully for?)

Unfortunately just today, my charger as well as one of my 160's have failed and need to be sent back to China. I'm not taking this as a reason to freak out as many do when something fails. Shit happens with gear unfortunately. I'm actually going to grab a second charger for back up and two more 160's off GMP immediately. It is always very disappointing to have something fail, especially after only a very short amount of use, but GMP responded immediately and reasonably (if you don't count paying air mail to china *grumble*) honouring their 12 months guarantee. Mind you if my second set fails, that will be another story...
But I think I was just unlucky, as I have not read of anyone else having an issue with the GMP combo yet.

Best Wishes

Lliam

Also, check out www.cinemaoxide.com for various battery mounting solutions for Epic. They have some great ways to utilize RED One accessories and save money on configuring your camera kit.

Man thats a bummer they don't recommend their chargers with other batteries. I really like the new switronix battery for RED being approved for air travel. I currently have 4 redvolts but would like at least one v mount for long run times. We are a small production house and would rarely need more than a couple hours of battery as most of our work is short form and commercials. Switronix makes a 2 bay charger for around $600. I guess that's the route we are going to have to take. Thank you everyone for your replies!

You can carry 3 of the 160Wh Global Media pro batteries in your carry on baggage. 2 Spare and 1 Attached to the camera. Or just two spare if you don't want to travel with one attached to the camera. They also transmit the data to the RED if you buy the ones I linked above. AFAIK, the switronix don't have any special approval other than the regulations state you can carry unlimited under 100Wh.

We've been charging other brands on our GMP charger all the time. No issues so far...

Thanks Tobias. Good to know. This was from GMP today though...

"Please only use the charger for GMP batteries. If you try to charge IDX, Sony or other brands you may damage the charger."
