  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

I've been out of the Red family for a bit, I pursued a different side of my passion for cinema by opening a movie theater of my own. But i still check in from time to time to see how everybody is doing. I'm glad to see that with every product announcement, people are free to praise/complain/grouce/wish about whatever Jim or Jarred had to say. I'm also glad to see that Jarred is still willing to do things that make him a "bad capitalist" but a great guy that creates loyalty among his customer base. It is a big part of the philosophy I have in business as well.

Kudos to Jarred and Red for listening and caring. It can be hard when people don't say nice things :p

+1 on this. If there will be scarlet versions, I most likely will just buy full on with the weapon.
 
Jarred, great move on the $9500 Dragon upgrade for those who are going for it-- if you're going to do it in April you might as well do it now and avoid gnashing of teeth. Now about the SSD transition... ;)

Is there anything RED can do to ease this transition? The sooner we sell off our 1.8" gear the more useful it'll be to current Epic owners who aren't planning on upgrading to Weapon and the better rates we can get on the used market. So knowing what sort of hurt we're looking at for upgrading a mini-ssd side module to a weapon mini-ssd module would be incredibly helpful. Also if anyone is like me they're going to hold out on buying a mini-ssd side module until my camera goes in since I don't want to buy it twice (Epic MiniSSD and Weapon MiniSSD).

I feel like there is a good compromise that helps RED continue to sell Side Module upgrades between now and Weapon and helps us start the transition now instead of waiting until the last second.

That is assuming that the current 512GBs won't be completely obsoleted as well by new faster higher speed lower compression SSDs when Weapon starts shipping.
 
Love how RED offers the ability to upgrade and I appreciate the two-months heads up on it. No other camera company would give us this advance warning. I had been looking at buying some modules and accessories (possibly the Off Hollywood Hotbox), but will hang onto that money for the time being until we know what all the Weapon upgrade includes.

I'm not a fan of the name either, but at the end of the day I care about how the tool works, not what it's called. If you really want to make it cool, offer a Weapon-X with adamantium lens mount...:ihih:

Wow. This is really unusual. I've never seen anything like this in business ever. I'd already made up my mind to buy the Scarlet Dragon, now it's before NAB and with mini-mags. I knew that early in the thread but this deal to Epix X owners - going back to the pre Dec 1 deadline to help out some guys who fell behind... It's unbelievable. Wow.
 
For upgrades, will there be option for owners to go carbon weapon? Or are all of weapons carbon?

This is an exciting update indeed. Thank you for the heads up early! Although I'm already a Dragon owner, I think this pre-warning, and then a price drop to get people to move on up is a good thing. I considered the price increase the same issue. Not enough people up grading, so the cost of the upgrades goes up. simple supply and demand.

We upgraded our epic to dragon, upgraded one scarlet to Epic dragon, and one scarlet to epic MX. So we just have one more to upgrade, and Capital is about to be released.

I really hope that Weapon is the start of the different brains. S35 Weapon, FF Weapon, 645 Weapon. I'm exited. and please put Mini XLR's back on the brain! :)

I'm really impressed with RED on this one.

We will get that price changed on Monday back to $9500. If you pre-paid for the upgrade at $12,500 but have not had it done yet, you will get the $9500 net price.

Oh, crap, Kelly is finished getting ready for dinner. If she asks, I was never on REDUSER....
 
Ha ha Brent... having dragons and weapons is one thing but cooling down an angry woman is something no fan or bomb squad support can help resolve!!!
 
Very welcome update regarding upgrade pricing!
Gotta love that attitude and the way you announce it in a forum post.

Lots to consider now, but in a very good way.

Hi Jon,

Jarred answered that question I posed, as I have one of each Dragon body. He said there will be a Non-Carbon Weapon as well.

If there is the option to upgrade from Epic MX to Dragon @ 9500 until NAB, I will definitely jump on this boat.
 
I've been scavenging this site for a concrete answer to this. Where is this stated that this is officially the case?
