  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

I don't want to shell out tons of cash for new cards... Why can't they just limit the data rate and let us use old cards like you can on dragon?

Because they wont fit in the slot.

It's No Film School. A fun and sometimes informative blog but they aren't necessarily great journalists over there. LOL

Currently:

512GB mini - $2,450 ($4.78 per GB)

240GB 1.8" - $1,450 ($6.04 per GB)

At that rate, a 240GB mini would cost around $1,150. $300 off a new 1.8" is a pretty good deal and I assume you could sell that on RU today if you wanted to.

The problem is for people like me who are cheap and only own 512GB of storage currently.

I need 3 cards minimum so that means I would be buying 3x $2,450 + $1,500 SideSSD mini + $400 card readers = $9,350
vs
3x $1,450 = $4350

So price per GB doesn't take into account the trouble of there not being smaller sizes or the extra cost of upgrading all of my modules and readers.

Does this mean that we trade in the side SSD module for a new one on the Weapon?
If we already have the mini-mags, would that be needed or should I keep my module as well?

You will be sending in your Dragon mini mag module to be upgraded to the Weapon mini mag module... if you choose the upgrade path.

Being on a very limited budget and having just upgraded to Dragon I can only say; BRING IT ON! The Dragon is incredible - bringing me and my work to new levels. I'm ready to be WEAPONIZED!

So all told you're looking at
$57,300 / 47,300 = 21% increased price but you get 3 Epics instead of 3 Scarlets. Epic is DEFINITELY worth 21% more than Scarlet. In fact if you take historical framerates:
12fps 6k vs 100fps 6k = 833% more performance for 21% increased price.

I see your point, but it's a bit far-fetched :)
Mathematically you're correct. But you can't reduce 10000$ to just a few percents in a calculation. You can buy many things with 10000$, gimbal, lenses, and so on, that can improve your work a lot too.
And if I shoot a narrative with a scarlet dragon there is not 833% more performance with the epic. It's about the same, as many people would shoot it in 5k even with an epic anyway, for some data and lenses reasons. You can make numbers say anything ^^ But well, yes of course, the Epic Dragon is a better camera. But clearly not 833% better.

Dude...I'm with ya, I only own a 64GB! Ha ha! Rent when I need more. We don't know what it will be yet so speculation doesn't do us any good. The side SSD could be replaced when we send it in for all we know. Also, I'm positive smaller Mini's will be a NAB announcement as well.

It should be said, and this is a big high five from this guy right here, that it's super freaking awesome that Red is staying with the general DSMC form factor.

There are so many who work with special rigs on the ground, in the air, and in the sea. This Weapon doesn't make them reinvent the wheel. Smart stuff right here people.

Jarred, I need to buy a new dragon, waiting for the insurance money. Do you have a date when those sculls starts rolling out? And will there be any "M skulls"?

Exciting news! Just wish RED would keep the current upgrade paths active, at least for an extra year or so, to give us all redusers time to be financially ready.

I for example have a Red Scarlet Mx and was counting on making the upgrade to Epic first and then later on to Epic Dragon, this news kinda of ruins that plan sadly.
