  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Update

Ok, thanks. This sentence of yours: "The CF mini SSD side modules do not work properly on the Aluminum bodies" is what created the confusion. It creates an impression there was a difference between aluminium and carbon fiber bodies.

That is entirely a different thing Lauri,

as it refers to the CF (Carbon Fiber) Mini Side SSD meant for the CF Epic bodies, that was asked about the possibility to purchase and use in NON CF Epic bodies, to which Jarred replied the above, hope this clears out your confusion... ;)

Thanks Ketch for the clarification, and yes, it's clear now. The information is rather scattered, so sometimes it's bit difficult to follow the reasoning. Wish everything goes well with your return to LA.

Most welcome Lauri, and yes sometimes it can be... ;)

And than you, been back shortly has been great, and now finalizing my move back is exciting... ;)

We tried that with the red 512gb full size cards remember, the "older" interface just couldn't keep up with continuos write cycles at full speed that the camera threw at them. Unfortunately it looks like development for faster memory chips used in the normal mag size form factor have gone a bit stale as the industry moves to PCI-E based storage in laptops etc... but if someone releases new chips in the old form factor that can keep up with Dragon then we will keep that option open.

Fair enough;-)

How about an adapter to allow new fast mags to slip into the old side module (albeit with slower performance)?

My (and I assume many others) situation is:

1: I will rush to buy faster mags to go with my soon to come Dragon cameras. Essential to getting low compression rates at HS
2: I will have a other jobs and cameras that don't need to speed all the time... And old mags and side modules spare
3: I want to find the least wasteful way to have everything..;-)

So either new tek in old form factor (I accept it wont happen) OR new tek slipping into old slots (via adapter) seems easiest from my POV.

Maybe a trade in program for guys like me to get rid of old side modules and cards? Like the old red drive trade in program?

Thanks for responding!

M

if the mini mag comes as a module then it would be cool to offer / use both kinds of media, the existing ones on the side and the new media in a module.

Is that going to be possible?

Battistella

This is what I am hoping for. I had to buy a new Epic with the current side SSD module last Friday for a job. I want to get more media and would buy the mini mags but only if there was a rear mini mag module so that I could use both kinds of media.

are there gonna be seperate Carbon Dragon owners thread? Since Red did with Epic-M owners which was only half price of Carbons they should do same with Carbon owners too..

The original M body with PL lens mount & media card module cost $44,000 add 9.000 for Dragon is $53,500 so actually on a par with the cost of CF Dragon, rather than half price.

Since it takes only a short period of time to upgrade a camera, (as established by the upgrade clean room at NAB) and since the CF cameras are probably just a matter of assembly as parts are manufactured, I'm curious if the number of sensors isn't the holdup to getting the Epic X upgrades. Naturally the qualified Epic Ms have to be done first and I'm sure that includes Peter Jackson's and Cameron's large number of cameras, plus anyone shooting a big budget movie at the time. That has to take a big bite out of any new stocks.

So what I would like to know (anybody from RED) is if the sensors are going to be the bottle neck moving forward, or are they coming in on a timely basis to allow the upgrade process to ramp up to maximum output?

This information would be helpful in setting expectations.

O there is a difference .. but it is purely thermal and mechanical, those changes have nothing to do with the speeds of the modules.

Hey Elsie, Sensors are definitely the bottleneck as we sit right now. Shooting a Big Budget film doesn't change that fact nor do they get you a jump in line for an upgrade. Carbons are the only way to fast track right now. Yield doesn't matter to them as the increased sensor price is accounted for and as you said, the lead time with them is just making the parts and putting them together ( which don't get me wrong, it still takes some time to machine the mags and mold the carbon )

Don't forget Panavision UK EPIC-M cameras... A lot of them ;)

Hi Jared,

Will all Dragon cameras be able to recognize which module is attached, as the end user changes out one, for the other, and adjust the write options accordingly? If not, what is the proposed procedure, please, to allow one, or th other, pr both modules to function, even simultaneously? If so, is this to be continued, or is there going to be a transition to only the Mini's?

Thank you very much

Fury

Hi Michael,

I asked Jarred about an adapter above : see post # 300: "We made it an adapter prototype and it was horrible... Janky as Janky could be, and the signal from double connections that an adapter requires proved to not be 100% dependable... so cross that off your list."

Thank you very much

Fury

Epic M to Dragon CF

Epic M to Dragon CF

Hi Jarred,

Is there any chance of an EPIC M upgrade to Dragon CF?...of course at an extra cost

Thanks

Harcharan

How about for the Epic-X? ;)

Same difference.. pretty much everything gets swapped out mechanically so the cost to upgrade a M and an X would be similar.

It would be an expensive upgrade, but I can see how some of you may consider the option. Let me get with Brent on Monday and run some numbers.

I like the sound of this...
