Dragon Update

How many cameras are you converting per week, Jarred? For owner operators like me taking a booking that we can't fulfill (or have to take at a loss due to rental charges) is hard to deal with, knowing that the camera might be out of action for two weeks at any time. The wait is fine, it's the date uncertainty that makes running a business difficult, and anything you can do to help us out is much appreciated. Cheers.

They are on a separate line.. I assumed people would understand that a Carbon Fiber and Magnesium Dragon can't possibly come from the same lines that pump out Aluminum Dragons.. maybe I assumed too much and some people don't understand that. Let me break it down for you Mark:

Carbon Fiber is a composite material made up of woven fibers and a Polymer ( i.e glue ) . That process involves molds, ovens and some extremely talented craftsmen.

Aluminum is a metal that is machined or cast, in Irvine we machine Aluminum using large 5 axis cnc machines, with again some extremely talented craftsmen called machinist.

The Magnesium parts go through a process very similar to Aluminum, being machined in Irvine. But Magnesium is very different from Aluminum, it is very very flammable, and hence requires different machines than the Aluminum mills with C02 blasts and suppressants and different coolants to avoid blowing the entire building up.

Hope that clears things up.. and explains why they are on separate lines.

But regardless, as we sit now upgrades are dependent on sensors that sit on "upgradable" sensor boards. and they are going out as fast as they come in since the larger batches started coming in last week on the 2nd. You have seen a handful of people here posting about getting their upgrades, there are many more out there that don't engage in posting. The machine is going....

And yes, Carbons take priority of everything.. Just like Epic-M cameras did when Epic came out. Guys getting Carbons will be a little less offensive to people that are waiting when the sensor yield increases and those weekly batches get bigger and bigger.. I know the wait is painful.

Hi Jarred,

If it will get me my Dragon CF any sooner, I'm pretty good with a Bridgeport Miller, having spent a number of years there, on Capital Ave., in Bpt.... I.m around the corner from U in Dana Point now, as well...;-)

Thank you very much

Fury

Hey Elsie, Sensors are definitely the bottleneck as we sit right now. Shooting a Big Budget film doesn't change that fact nor do they get you a jump in line for an upgrade. Carbons are the only way to fast track right now. Yield doesn't matter to them as the increased sensor price is accounted for and as you said, the lead time with them is just making the parts and putting them together ( which don't get me wrong, it still takes some time to machine the mags and mold the carbon )

Thanks for the clarification Jarred. This goes a long way toward understanding what you are up against and in turn helps me reset expectations for delivery. The good news is that there aren't any postings on Reduser of problems with the Dragons that are in the wild so I guess you guys have things pretty well nailed down. Actually, having to wait for sensors suggests to me that you are holding to high standards... and that gives me confidence in the cameras I will have after the upgrade process does get to me.

Thanks for taking the time to bring us up to speed.

Same difference.. pretty much everything gets swapped out mechanically so the cost to upgrade a M and an X would be similar.

It would be an expensive upgrade, but I can see how some of you may consider the option. Let me get with Brent on Monday and run some numbers.

If we talk about the original price of my Epic M #620, difference shouldn't be that important but if the upgrade is based on updated price of M bodies, that's another story… not sure I could do the jump even if Carbon dragon is the ultimate goal.
To tell the truth, last month, I was still in "patience" mode regarding Dragon like "I'm fine with MX and no rush for the upgrade" but with all the excitation around the new sensor and especially the Carbon Fiber Dragon, I have to admit I can't wait to test these cameras!

... wouw! ... what a different attitude!

I foresee major problems with this camera... A Dragon that breathes fire with a mount made from highly flammable Magnesium. That is bound to end badly! ;-)

Hi Jarred,

Is there any chance of an EPIC M upgrade to Dragon CF?...of course at an extra cost

Thanks

Harcharan

Sure... I don't see why not.

I'd be curious to see some pricing on this. I guess I don't know how serious I would be to pursue this, I'm not in a hurry, It would be for the upgrade to the Carbon model for the bit of weight reduction and carbon fiber coolness… ;)

Scarlet to Epic Carbon CF

Scarlet to Epic Carbon CF

I hope the Scarlet owners will have equal opportunity to trade in their cameras in favor of Epic Dragon (Carbon Fiber). The more Carbons the better.

Does magnesium/aluminum body difference become a factor when it's just a sensor board upgrade?
just wondering - are the "upgradable sensor boards" different to the ones going into CF dragons?
Not trying to push buttons here Jarred - just trying to get a picture :)

Not from the materials but there are slight differences between upgrades and brand new cameras.
