DRAGON CF

DRAGON CF

You first upgrade whatever Epic you have to the Dragon sensor.. then you can choose to upgrade to the Carbon Dragon, much like Chris originally suggested. Many of you that havn't taken delivery yet and want the Carbon version will likely do that it at the same time when your cameras come in.

thanks Jarred...this makes things more clear....

!. RED EPIC M to RED DRAGON CARBON FIBRE (USD 9500 - original cost of upgrade+USD12000) = USD 21500

(As EPIC M owners are already in front line and upgrades may start this month, so most owners may wait for their original upgrade and not take the CF path. Also M owners have paid already paid a premium)

If it costs $21,500 to upgrade to CF Dragon I would be very tempted. That happens to be exactly how much I have in my account at Red. :-)

Dragon Upgrade

Hi Jarred,

So when does the EPIC M upgrade to DRAGON starts or is it already ON..

Thanks

So, is there an upgrade path where those of us with Epic X bodies can upgrade to the old Epic M bodies that are being replaced with Carbon?

SSD compatibility

SSD compatibility

…. Unfortunately it looks like development for faster memory chips used in the normal mag size form factor have gone a bit stale as the industry moves to PCI-E based storage in laptops etc... but if someone releases new chips in the old form factor that can keep up with Dragon then we will keep that option open.

I'll second what Jarred said: SSDs are moving to PCI-Express! The death of the 1.8" form factor for SSDs was pretty obvious back at NAB 2013 when other manufacturers ditched 1.8" SSDs in favor of other form factors, so the change to Mini-Mags should come as no surprise. Also, AFAIK SATA 12Gbit/s will not be developed, contrary to what has been written earlier in this thread. Too expensive to implement and too power hungry, apparently...

Some questions:

1. Will it be possible to run two different SSD modules on a RED, f.ex. one old 1.8" 3Gbit/s SSD rear module and one 6Gbit/s SSD Mini-mag side module to ease the transition?

2. Are the Mini Mags M.2 SATA Express or mSATA?
If M.2 SATA Express: Is the plan to have the current Mini-Mag Module be compatible with future M.2/PCI-E based SSDs once those SSDs are mature enough to stick in a camera?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2

P.S. I'm not a computer expert. I'm just a DP who's had to read up on this out of necessity. If somebody has a tip on how to not fall asleep while reading these Wiki pages, please let me know!!!

Thanks,

This is more of a reminder, but most of you know this.

Just got off the horn with somebody woefully confused about the Dragon upgrade as they thought it was a simple "sensor swap".

It's not.

What I know gets replaced is mostly written about here:

https://support.red.com/entries/23769427-What-does-the-EPIC-RED-DRAGON-upgrade-include-

- New RED DRAGON sensor
- New OLPF
- New RED DRAGON ASIC board
- New Front Enclosure engraved with “DRAGON 6K”
- New DRAGON coin logo
- Laser engraved “DRAGON” on DSMC 1.8” SSD SIDE MODULE
- DSMC FAN 2.0 UPGRADE KIT (TOP/BOTTOM)
- Sensor Upgrade Standard Warranty that covers associated parts and labor for a period of ninety (90) days

There's a new OLPF Port Bushing/Sensor Box thing too. That ASIC board is a fairly big deal as well.

As everything changes so much - what ended up happening with the Red Armor situation?

I still have 14 months on my Armour, so just wondering as all new Dragon upgrade elements are only covered in the 90 day period? So, Armour continues but won't cover any of the major elements Phil just posted above?

This is all good news.. Wow go offline for a day and look what happens to the possibilities of your Epic X upgrade.
That said, now I got to go back and start saving and figuring out the cost all over again as soon as we have a $$$$ figure from RED..fingers crossed.
Thank you RED for even considering this.

While the money spent on a Dragon upgrade is an absolute bargain I don't understand the enthusiasm for the Carbon upgrade at the estimated (guessed) $12,000. That's a lot of money for .45 kilograms weight loss and a "cool" looking CF Shell. Heat dissipation is an issue with this camera so a CF shell may even increase in fan speed. Of course if I ran a MOVI, Drone, steadicam or was handheld all day every day I might think differently

Most important thing for me is delivery dates. If the Carbon Dragon upgrade is quicker than the standard Dragon upgrade, then it may be worth looking at.

If there is not much time in it, then it's not worth the extra cost to me.

I would love to have firm dates.

(I am not stressing on delivery dates, but I do need to have the information in order to make an informed business decision).

Just hoping the Epic X early adopters don't get pushed further down the line. Went through that during the R-1 to Epic upgrade when precious parts from Japan were allocated to the Epic Ms. RED has been generous in discounting trade ups for early adopters so we (I) can't really complain.

Based on Jarred's comments above, it's not a shortcut or will not have a speed advantage. Your camera comes up for upgrade, you send in for Dragon sensor, then have the option to do the Carbon upgrade at that time.

Anyway, I guess we'll see what the final details and costs are. I'm definitely interested, I think a lot of us are. But price vs. practicality of the upgrade will definitely have to be weighed. All I know is that I should've bought Dragon Carbon the second it was announced and then I could put my EPIC-M up for sale when time comes to send it off for Dragon. I probably would've come out ahead on that one. Not so sure it would work that way now, probably better to just wait for my M to get upgraded and if the extra cost to Carbonize it makes sense, I'll do that too...

People upgrading to Carbon Dragons do not get to bump in line.. that would be disrespectful to everyone already in line, And I think people's feathers are already up a bit by all the brand New Carbon Dragons jumping the velvet rope.

As mentioned the process is likely to be: Your number comes up for your upgrade as normal, you get your email to send in your camera, and at that time you probably will be given a link to opt-up to Carbon. We also likely will let you guys pre-order the Carbon Upgrade though the store or your Bomb Squad Rep ahead of time to make sure the paperwork part of this upgrade process doesn't slow down your upgrade turn around.

I can pretty much guarantee that at that time will be the best time to upgrade to a Carbon with the best price because of the cost savings of doing everything together. The price to upgrade your Epic Dragon to a Carbon Dragon later down the road will most definitely be higher.

Don't be surprised if the above all changes 4 times over till we lock it down next Friday... and Brent is going to kick my ass for giving out these premature details, But I figure since this was your guys idea you can chime in during the decision making process... Just dont get bent out of shape if we completely ignore any or all of your suggestions :)

thanks....someone on this thread was accusing me for throwing the idea of EPIC M to Carbon Upgrade thinking that this will push back the original upgrades....I think the comments above clears everything...

@Jarred, for those upgrading to Carbon are you including the Magnesium/Black PL mount or will that be a separate purchase? I was asked this earlier today and didn't know.

Separate Purchase... There are a good lot of Epic Owners out there ( still photography etc ) that don't use PL mounts.

Ah. That makes a lot of sense. Thanks.
