  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Update

I have to say that I am excited about the new cards.... I find the compression not an issue but this improvement is great. I am totally up for the smaller SSD card upgrade. Also I am so surprised about the Carbon Fiber demand and interest..... But hey it is all good...

Chris,

I am so happy you have a carbon Dragon. Maybe we could get together after I wrap this show and compare notes in LA. Kinda find the Carbon a bit sexy.

6kFF @ 16-bit @ 72 fps is 222.19 MB per sec... so that's right on the limit....

Read and Write speeds are very different things.. specially since we write to the cards in a very specific way.

Jarred, I'm not following.... ;-)

my statement was in regards to the minimum write speed (~ 222 MB/s) the cam has to do in order to perform 6KFF @ 16 bit @ 72 fps @ 12:1 compression...

Are you saying it has to write less data to the card ?

Thanks.

I suspect the stream of data being written to the SSD will incorporate a number of extra bits used to 'Detect' if there has been an error (like a regular hard disc), and have further bits to 'Correct' any errors detected (like the Reed Solomon cross correlated error correction found in CDs).

If this extra error data is being stored on the SSD, it may also be stripped off (in data reconstruction) before file export .
If all my guesses here are correct .. the 'useful' data rate being written to the SSDs would be lower than 225 MB/s.

+) One question I have (might have missed this) is if the 2014 CF mini SSD will be available for purchase for non-CF Epics.

Sorry Mike I misunderstood your question.

Antony, The CF mini SSD side modules do not work properly on the Aluminum bodies.. remember the CF Dragon bodies / internals are machined out of magnesium, and the CF is thermally and structurally engineered to account for those differences.

Mini SSD coming end of the year.. does that mean this year?

We have two more Carbons on order, so I'm wondering when these mini SDDs will be hitting the streets.

So, I guess all of the calculator apps including the one on red.com assume 12 bit recording. Quite misleading.

All those details to come later, but just as an example, with the current full size REDMAG cards if you record 6K @ 72fps your minimum REDCODE setting is 15:1. With the new Mini-Mags, that compression number goes down to 12:1.

Hmm, for those of us who enjoy the current form-factor, will there be faster SSDs released for us with similar specs?

Seems like a good question to me... I quite like the current size but would love more speed.

We tried that with the red 512gb full size cards remember, the "older" interface just couldn't keep up with continuos write cycles at full speed that the camera threw at them. Unfortunately it looks like development for faster memory chips used in the normal mag size form factor have gone a bit stale as the industry moves to PCI-E based storage in laptops etc... but if someone releases new chips in the old form factor that can keep up with Dragon then we will keep that option open.

So Jarred, do you effectively say there is a kind of constructional limitation in the aluminium body that prevents higher writing speeds to the SSD? Furthermore, circumventing such limitations is the true motivation of the CF body? If so, this somewhat changes the view.

no.. There is no speed difference between carbon fiber dragons and aluminum dragons. We are talking about the difference between the mini mag and normal mag sizes and internals.

This is all great news. Exiting times for RED and as usual we win.

Carbon dragon and some of those first upgrade are moving, hopefully it will be in full swing soon!

Congrats!

if the mini mag comes as a module then it would be cool to offer / use both kinds of media, the existing ones on the side and the new media in a module.

Is that going to be possible?

Ok, thanks. This sentence of yours: "The CF mini SSD side modules do not work properly on the Aluminum bodies" is what created the confusion. It creates an impression there was a difference between aluminium and carbon fiber bodies.
