  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Update + A.D.D.

Ah, yes, that would be OK if RED organized it but just now they do not allow it.

I had an EPIC seller suggest trusting him to transfer ownership after I pay for the upgrade. I`ve also seen a couple other sellers suggest this in their for sale threads. I can only see it ending badly.

The upgrade is key and should remain an option in one form or another as long as it is feasible, but holding up and an entire product launch to afford a select few the limited opportunity to corner the rental market yet again is beyond generous. This group has been exceedingly well taken care of and would have no legitimate beef if Red were to run upgrades concurrent with all new sales going forward, not just limited editions (Provided they can actually handle the volume). An exchange program could free the current log jam while still providing top level customer care.

Most of us would agree that Red is still very much leading the industry, but that isn't likely to last. It will become increasingly difficult to maintain that position. I suggest that Red is squandering their lead by holding up releases. They should be using that lead to develop a reputation of being the leader who may be small but quick, nimble and consistently early to market instead of perpetuating the old negatives. They are turning the corner and should come out of it straight and fast but this is holding them back. IMHO

Because according to this thread very very few cameras are upgraded (which I am sure is untrue)...

I was a early adopter, red enthusiast and also Epic M buyer and with a time stamp of 8th April 11.21 i really expected to have at least one dragon by now... If I thought this was in doubt I would have sold one of my EPIC Ms and grabbed a CF dragon in last year.

Perhaps Red could give feedback as they did in the Red ones days? The number of blasts going out type of thing!?

Dont let it bug you too much if it helps.
I can think of several cameras that are not on that list, even names on that list that have not been updated.
Plus as Brent said, rental houses and as Phill says multiples in So Korea.
I run into CF Dragons out in the field time to time also.

I`m sure there are lots of camera not on the list too - and some of those as you say will have been upgraded - but by the same token you have got to assume lots more "off list" cameras are still waiting.

What I`m saying is the list does not need to contain all cameras that ordered the upgrade to give us a picture. My bet is this list is probably representative of the wider % complete whether or not a camera is on the list or not.

I consider the list as a percentage of complete overall. It doesnt have to be exhaustive and contain every camera - the list is represeting whats going on. And what the list shows is a high percentage of cameras has not been completed.

And even if a couple havent updated their status on the list the percentage complete is still VERY VERY low.

How many have ordered the upgrade in Berlin but not been processed? My guess is the list is not a bad barometer as to percentage complete. And after all this time the percentage is still very low.

Making cameras isn't the problem ( to an extent ) .. it is the time it takes to process all the upgrades.

Another option... a trade-in option for new cameras instead of an upgrade. Will cost a bit more, but elevates alot of the bottleneck.

I belong to that group stage 4 that got in first when the RED markets finally opened, then got slammed by the price drop on the EPIC. So it does feel like some people are winners always. And that's fine, but it can get annoying if they start complaining about wait time.

I think a trade-in option for new cameras may be the right model, but it may dilute your principle a bit. I really believe if there was an option where someone could order a new DRAGON today and receive it in 3 weeks guaranteed, it'd totally help with the perception problem.

All this is really hard, but hey, if it wasn't hard, would RED have taken it on? ;)
 
I've waited to chime in on this thread because I have a foot in each position... that is, I have one camera upgraded to Dragon and another one at the tail-end of the first group waiting to be upgraded. So here is what I would like to see happen.

First of all, I am all in on the idea of exchanging Epic X cameras for Dragons... I have to embrace that position or else be branded a hypocrite, since I made that suggestion way back when the Dragon was announced. My thinking at the time was that it is easier to build a camera than it is to tear one down and rebuild it.

I've since thought of the details of that off-the-cuff comment.

First of all, anyone wishing to take advantage of this program should be able to do so at the present price, including discounts for early adopters, plus the cost of one year of Armour. But to be eligible for this sweetheart of a deal, one's camera being traded in must grade out as excellent condition. Cameras not meeting this specification should be assigned a grade commensurate with its condition and an additional charge for trading would be applied.

This leaves RED with the option of re-selling the cameras according to their condition when received... i.e., Battle Tested Grade 1, BT Grade 2, etc. etc. These cameras could go out (after inspection) with commensurate warranty. The buyer's of these cameras can choose to leave them as Epic MX or pay to upgrade them to Dragon.

I'm sure there is some tweaking that could be done to the above to make the program work for many... and there should also be left in place the current option of upgrading.

But I think this could help satisfy the bottleneck of getting cameras upgraded, and I also think the Epic BT program would create the possibility of a lot of single camera operations getting a second camera as a BT. Perhaps even giving current customers first crack at the BT's before opening it up to the public.
iI'm not sure how the Scarlet owners would fit into this but I do think there should be some accommodation for them as well.

I would absolutely take the trade-in option if it was just the cost of one year armor on top of the upgrade cost. My camera would also pass inspection seeing as it's less than a year old.
 
I don't think suddenly changing the method and criteria of the whole trade-in process at this point in the game is going to be a benefit to anyone. If RED can find a way to make things work faster without complicating things, I'm sure they'll implement it.
 
Something weird just happened -we received our Dragon upgrade notices!

In process now, so we're excited...although we have to pay twice for new SSD Modules for both cameras plus $1,500 each for the new Mini SSD Side Modules we'd want. I don't quite understand that -why would we have to pay $1,500 for each camera for a Side Module we will never use?

I'm confused. Is the $1500 for the SSD module part of the $9500 upgrade price? I won't be upgrading a Side SSD module on my EPIC-M, I already have the mini module installed.

Not that it's going to mean a whole lot. I ordered my upgrades right at 12:00 noon on the 8th.

My upgrade did not include a mini SSD. I did buy one, which I sent in to get engraved since I already had my Dragon.
