  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED TEAM Why NOV 3rd???

Justin, this is not new for RED. They have made these planned announcements several times now. The last one being for Redcine-x Pro. The only way to know if this will be their biggest announcement yet will be to tune in on the 3rd and see what all the excitement is about. With Canon in the mix it makes it even more interesting.

Hopefully Red and Canon don't fight. Maybe the twist will be that Canon has made some sick cinema ef lenses for Epic! I like the stuff from both companies. Red and Canon keep doing what you do. I watch and wait.

Meh, one camera has got to win!! This could be on pay per view!

Totally Love It!! We should come up with something like a "Rumble in the Jungle" tag line. Let's do this!!

Why not NOV 2nd?
I can think of a couple of reasons:

1) 11/2 is a Sunday, so it won't get the same publicity a major announcement would on Monday.

2) whichever company makes the announcement second has the advantage of knowing what their rival is going to do, in terms of product features, pricing, and release dates.

But to tell you the truth, I think Canon and Red already know most of what each other are going to do.

1) Monday sucks, everyone is working!

2) RED will kick ass no matter what, and it makes no difference at this point, whatcha got is whatcha got.. Who cares that canon now has a 5D with time code.. It's still a fucking still camera with another feature..

RED is RED like it was this morning, even though they were just fucking with us? They get their kicks with blowing us away... Yes Scarlet will, but I would bet money that Jim would have loved to release Scarlet before expectations grew to Ron Jeremy size. The point of this thread is getting away from the norm..

Would any REDUSER complain if they announced Scarlet early?

Uh, not to be argumentative but 11/2 is a Wednesday. :-)

You're absolutely right -- I checked the wrong calendar (October vs. November). In that case, whether it's the 2nd or the 3rd is completely arbitrary -- but my second comment is still right.

There's always the possibility that Canon will withhold the pricing information. To me, that's the real wildcard here.

Historically, one camera has never "won" in the entire film industry. There's always been a half-dozen different choices. To me, it all boils down to giving the cinematographer as many options as possible, choosing from a lot of different price points and factoring in size, picture quality, and flexibility. 16mm, 35mm, full-size digital, 2/3" digital, HD, 2K, 4K... it's good to have different choices. Life would be much too boring if everything had to be the same.

Microsoft made Apple better over the last decade just through competition, and I think the same can be true of Red, Canon, Arriflex, Sony, and other companies. Competition forces innovation, and often, things get better (or cheaper). Evolution doesn't always happen from a single company, working alone and ignoring everything going on in the world.

Canon is an excellent company that makes excellent cameras and glass. Why the hate on for Canon? I for one love my 1d, and will pick up the 1dx when it's out.

You cannot use strobes with Epic, and using constants to match the amount of light that my strobes put out for stills is unrealistic for me. The 1dmkiv and 1dsmkiii have safe roles in our shop, and only the 1dx will make me put down those two cameras.

Colin

You can't use strobes for Canon 1D MK IV either, I own one, it sux, I'm selling it. Canon makes nice glass, RED makes amazing fast beautiful glass with a nice bouquet.
REASONS FOR CANON HATE

#1 - nothing is ever upgradeable, ever, you lose your investment the second a new model comes out, with red, as it is right and for the future, everything is upgradable - that's #1...
#2 - DOF, yes, the dof is nice, real nice, if it's just two people talking but consider this the CANON 1D MK IV @ a T4 with a 50mm prime at 10 feet of distance gives your about 2.3 inches before your subject is out of focus, IE, one of the eyes or something else goes soft. On the RED EPIC on a 50mm prime at a T4.........
...... THE SAME SETTINGS ON THE EPIC GIVES YOUR 1 FOOT AND 8 INCHES..... NOW DO YOU UNDERSTAND?!?!?!?
#3 native asa 160 rumored ... terrible, which is why when they come out with a new model they are like look at the strides we made!?! Well, you didn't give much to begin with, for moving images ... I for one am a DP so this is important for me, if you wanna take pictures, go get a Canon, I would buy a scarlet myself at this point but your call.
#4 In the coming month's RED will grow quicker than any other camera company in the history of cinema because of all of the above. The strides they have made against Canon, Arri (allegedly leading to theft of schematics from Jim) it's a no contest - if it's you hobby then stay loyal to Canon, if it's your life, it's mine, there is no question what camera I would get, I do think there is a place for Canon's optics, particularly focus and zoom motors, and arri's master primes, but RED is giving people the tool to succeed, they had my back, I got theirs!

With respect Paul, I think you're slightly missing the previous poster's point.....he was mostly talking about Stills. I (and most people here, no doubt) agree with you that there is no comparison when it comes to motion, and no question that RED's products are leagues ahead in that respect. There are many, many Stills shooters out there though, for whom the pro DSLR's from Canon and Nikon (the latter in my case :) ) are essential tools for much of what they do.

So, more power to RED's DSMC elbow, but no need to disrespect Canon/Nikon entirely.

No, and I shot a commercial that got in and placed at Cannes ... http://vimeo.com/25984806 .... but price-point, and buyers remorece ... You can't honestly tell me that at best with a rating of 160 asa for your Nikon or Canon vs 800 for a Scarlet even for still would be preferable to you... DSLR's have their place and it's not in the professional world unless a lot of planning, work, and hot-rodding is done to them... but it's also the mechanic so you do have a point, just the focus issues alone though for motion, and the stills on RED are amazing with the DOF>

Again, no argument in respect of motion, but DSLR's definitely have their place in the professional world and most Stills shooters would absolutely take, and need, a low rated iso (100-200) over 800 any day. The top pro DSLR's have a very wide useable iso range and Nikon's D3s for example (and no doubt Canon's new 1D X) can virtually shoot in the dark at iso's of 12,800 plus with acceptable noise.....

This stuff is really a Motion v Stills thing though and it's fair to say that most people on the forum start from a motion perspective. I don't but I'm nevertheless intrigued by RED's DSMC concept and looking forward to where it might lead.

Maybe "you" can't use strobes on the 1d, but as a function of the camera, it works perfectly.

As George pointed out we are talking about the Epic as a still camera compared to the pro line DSLRs as still cameras. Not motion.

I own an EPIC, and know first hand what this is like to use as a still camera, and if I was hired on a stills shoot, the EPIC is not what I would take. If it were a motion job, then I would leave the 1d at home and take the EPIC.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND NOW PAUL?!?!?!?!?
