What would be an accurate guess? next year?
With so little information coming from RED and playing a little bit of guessing game, if they still fulfilling the April Pre-Orders from NAB 2013 I will be really surprise if they even upgrade an scarlet next year.
anybody know how many dragons upgrades they do every week? 5, 10, 100?

On a slightly different note (and not to hijack your question) -- we are in the prospects of moving to the RED at our studio. Are new purchases of the RED Dragon at the back of the queue so to speak?

Carbon Fiber are 2 weeks away once ordered if I recall.
Scarlet Dragon, I bet not before the end of the year, considering the pace of the Epic Dragon upgrades process.

I figured part of the premium of the Carbon Fiber version was getting 'ahead of the line' in a way...

FACT . The later it gets the less incentive to do the upgrade.

So if upgrades are happening in 2016 and if you've had the camera since 1st release you are looking at paying 10k to upgrade a 4 year old piece of tech. Draw your own conclusions.

I'm still optimistic that it's happening and that it will be this year. I think things will get a lot more concrete come NAB...

I agree on the program possibly being cancelled. The Epic to Dragon upgrades is so incredibly slow that I don't see it ever getting to Scarlet. Technology moves so quickly in the camera biz that by the time they get to Scarlet it probably isn't worth the cost. I mean, if you bought Scarlet for $7,500 plus the $10,500 upgrade cost or whatever it ends up being will be roughly equivalent to the cost of the Dragon-X if it's priced at $17,500 like the Epic MX. It just doesn't make sense to upgrade Scarlet when you can get better performance and better frame rates for a tiny bit more money. I know it sucks but at some point if I owned a Scarlet I'd already be resigned to this thought. My guess is if RED goes ahead with the Epic M to Dragon trade in program (to get past the slow upgrades) at an additional cost, they may dragonize those cams traded in and offer Scarlet users the option to upgrade to Dragon at the $10,500 upgrade cost plus trade-in of their scarlet. This may be an excellent trade-off and a plus to the promise made to Scarlet owners...

That would make Scarlet -> Scarlet Dragon people really happy at the cost of making Scarlet -> Epic X and Epic X ->Dragon upgraders really annoyed. Red wouldn't do that, would they?

Whatever they do someone will be butt hurt. Better to just rip off the band aid and move on. Things are getting far too complicated, are too slow, and did I mention taking far too long? It's best for RED to just either say Scarlet is EOL'd and upgrade not possible or get going with the upgrades. Epic to Dragon upgrades are moving at such a slow rate that I don't see Scarlet upgrades even beginning until 2015. By the time upgrades are completed it would be late 2015-early 2016. By then Dragon will be old news and RED will have announced the next sensor...

yeah agreed... It they decided to move forward w the scarlet dragon upgrades in late 2015 the price would have to be lower, and that point might not be worth it to red to complete. My little scarlet has never failed me on a gig and all I wanted was the upgrade for dynamic range/color so i skipped the epic mx trade in. It would kind of suck, but something will fill the need in the market I'm sure.

Wouldn't you think that upgrades would start to speed up dramatically in the next 60 days?

Call me crazy but I would think that once all the kinks are worked out that the process should speed up dramatically. How was it originally with the M to MX upgrade anyway? I wasn't in the game back them.

It's not the physical assembly that is moving slow. It's notification to the time the actual cameras are shipped to RED, processed, upgraded, go through QC, then shipped back to customers. If the customer delays shipment it slows things down... This is most likely what is slowing things down. Considering there are thousands of Epics to Dragon upgrades, it looks like it's going to take a while. Then comes the Scarlet upgrades.
