  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Scarlet upgrade what is your best guess?

A few thoughts...

I doubt there's much that's yanked out of a camera during the upgrade process that can be later resold. One possible benefit RED may see from allowing trade-ins is they have a fully functional MX camera they can sell as battle tested.

RED Scarlet MX is a good entry into the RED ecosystem. EOLing it may not be a good idea... That said, things are getting much more competitive now so another price cut wouldn't surprise me. There also could be a lot of battle tested Epics hitting the market if the trade in option is made available.

People that upgraded from Scarlet to Epic MX to Epic D will probably be annoyed, but they did get 3 brand new cameras (assuming Dragon trade in) and 2 at a big discount. They also had, potentially, up to a year or so of Epic MX use. That's worth something.

And who knows what new products may be announced at NAB. We'll see soon...
 
I think NAB is be the biggest wild card in this scenario. If a true competitor to Red comes out with something special (don't get me wrong, I love Blackmagic and my pocketcam, but it just isn't comparable as a camera susgtem to my Scarlet) this might force their hands - like the F55 and the Epic price drops.

Yeah, and this would explain why RED is kind of keeping quiet about this. Either they are waiting to see what others do or they have a few surprises of their own coming... (or both)

None that I can find. Supposedly the announcement will be at NAB along with possibly a couple new 4K cameras and a body upgrade to the F55 which takes it into an Amira form factor for EFP.
 
My only real concern at this point is that if the upgrades get called off at some point I would be stuck with a Scarlet-x that I always intended to upgrade to either Epic-x or Epic-d.
I'm hoping that RED will give us a deadline that's realistic to meet if the program gets cancelled.

I'm also really excited to see what happens at NAB. Have you guys seen the rumours of the f55 DSLR?

Not to late to upgrade to an Epic. Phenomenal camera. The upgrade is an amazing deal, you can't go wrong. I'm actually surprised more folks haven't done it yet.

If EpicMX drops in price at NAB or sometime soon it won't be the greatest deal.

I think a lot of shows will shoot Dragon in 5k for data, processing and lens coverage reasons. A lot of shows don't have too much overcrank, and rarely need more than 72fps when they do, and so the Scarlet Dragon seemed like a nice balance between price and performance to me.

It was my fault for not predicting the obvious that it would take years for Scarlet Dragon to be a reality, and I should have gone EpicMX right away. At the moment it seems to make sense to wait for NAB to see what happens.
 
To all those Epic upgraders from Scarlet....... you do realise you are now behind Scarlet upgrades. ie you are now at the very back of the dragon upgrade list ?

Sure. I guess it really just depends on the business model you're after. I owned a Scarlet and paid it off in a year in my commercial work, kinda took forever actually as I could only use it as a b-cam most of the time because of the frame rates. Upgraded to an Epic about two months ago and the thing is damn near paid itself off already because of the added capability. Not a single client has asked or even cared about the Dragon yet, so I would assume Epic has a long way to go before its obsolete.

Technology is a mule to be worked. Predicting what may or may not be popular in 12 months seems somewhat fruitless these days. It's unfortunate, but I now require digital equipment to pay itself off in half a year or I won't even think about investing.

This is assuming one would even want to make the upgrade. If you light, the Epic is more than enough camera for more than a few projects.

In addition, as the good folks at RED continually say, "Everything Changes". I'm sure upgrade lists certainly can as well.
 
I really really hope that they do not cancel the Scarlet Dragon. For us little guys it fills all the major "flaws" of the current Scarlet. (Lower noise and higher frame rate)Everyone points to the Epic Dragon as competing with the Alexa, but in reality the Scarlet-D will be much closer in specs to the Alexa which should be pushed. While the Epic-D blows it out of the water.

I know the Scarlet is a niche' market, but I hope RED at least give us low end users this final bone. I cannot afford to do two upgrades (Scarlet to Epic to Dragon.)

Plus I think RED is sitting on a goldmine with "Battle Tested" Scarlet Dragons. I imagine around 12-14K for all the Scarlet Bodies that have been turned in for Epics that RED (hopefully) updates to Dragons.

Everything changes but the last announcement was that all Epic-X upgrades are before any Scarlet -> Dragon upgrades. Once you do the Scarlet -> Epic Tradein red considers your new Epic just a new Epic. That means you're ahead of all Scarlet upgrades in line I believe.
