  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DRAGON-or-HELIUM

I'll ask this another way. If i put a full-frame 50mm lens on dragon 6k, and the same 50mm lens on the Helium at 8k, which is a wider field of view and by how much?

It's almost the same. A bit wider on the Dragon which is 30.7mm vs 29.9mm (Helium sensor). It's about the sensor size, not the pixels size. The Alexa uses 3k for S35, the Varicam 4k, the Dragon 5k, the Helium 7k, and they all have the same field of view at these resolutions.

I thought that field of view at a given mm is impossible on 8K Helium? Meaning 6k dragon with its 1.3 crop from full frame is much bigger than 8k Helium. Am I mistaken?

Helium is 29.9x15.77mm

Current 6k epic is 30.7 mm x 15.8 mm

Thanks for posting the .tiff Luigi.

This is only one photo so it's impossible to make any real judgement (and I'm sure Helium will be tweaked way more before wide release), but I like the Dragon color treatment better in this case. The Helium photo seems to have a more yellowish wash over it while the Dragon color seems a bit more neutral. Are these just default settings?

Once again, this is only one frame so it's impossible to generalize at this point.

Can you post some more side by sides?

8K Helium and 6K Dragon are almost the same sensor size, so FOV would almost be identical.

What you get with Helium is MORE RESOLUTION at the same FOV, which can be good/bad depending on your needs.

Perfectly said.

Gene , download original files is about 1.9gb link is in my post ;)

That's at 250iso... It does seem like currently the Helium would want to be closer to 2000iso

If you can afford the Helium I suppose you can invest in some high quality NDs

But isn't having constantly an extra piece of glass on the lens and a native iso of 2000 neutralizing the advantages of the Helium concerning colors and cleanliness?

Thank you Luigi for the Helium R3Ds.
A very interesting opportunity to compare the 2 sensors.

If there are any more to share, I would be most grateful.

Enjoy the beasts!

I suppose depends if you are shooting day or night.

Also Kippertie is coming out with the behind the lens OLPF ND's which could become very handy on Helium
