  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon misconceptions and clarification...

Awesome Jim. Just can't wait to get my paws on a Dragon!

i noticed Mark's footage was processed with rg3/rc3. Is this a new version tweaked for dragon, or is the Mx color science? Wlll there be another iteration specifically for Dragon?

There will be a specific Dragon color science.

Jim, I hope you never stop pushing the envelope. I can't wait to send my Epic for an upgrade. Congrats on all your achievements.

Dont you start with that "old" stuff...your not and for single handedly dismantleing and rebuilding an empire known as Hollywood id say your in great shape!!! you know how greatful i feel and the Idea that Dragon is soon to arrive is just another token of your undying willingness to not be outdone by behomoths that had this industry in a chokehold! Low con oplf phooey!!! done want it dont need it! think ill sit done and fire up a Cohiba and daydream of a Dragon...thanks!!!

You can retire once you ship the 645 format Epic! ;) Seriously though, for $9.5k I get the best camera in the world. If I told someone that back in 2006 they would have fallen on the floor laughing. You have already accomplished the impossible...more than once.

Sorry about that- if I only had known... Andrew nothing personal but enough already (I think?)

Is there any advantage having a low con 1/4 filter in camera as opposed to post? Or done both ways, is the final result exactly the same?

Maybe someone should make a post filter?

One advantage I can think of is seeing it's effect on set and how it effects your image. Also, keeps you from having to apply that "effect" to every shot in post if you want it. General advantage overall is getting a bit more perceptual dynamic range during capture.

Flipside. You have a bit more control in post and it isn't applied to everything. Also, if you are using other types of filtration you may not want to stack too many in the trays.

Just depends on the look and workflow you're after.

Some people will tell you the results are the same but I completely disagree. On camera diffusion is inherently different and produces different results. The way light comes through the filter, spreads and flares the lens based on the lens's unique coating cannot be replicated exactly in post. I'm a big fan of diffusion in front on the lens but skin softening in post.

You can leave the fight Jim, but you'll never leave the fighter.

I'm proud of you, your "little" invention ripples through so many of us, beyond counting. In the little and the big ways, your camera has changed lives completely.

The war on conventional thinking rages on...

I am old. I am tired. I started Oakley 38 years ago. RED 7 years ago. In both cases my goal was to make a difference. To declare war on conventional thinking.

That was my instinct, has anyone tested the two methods side by side with results we can reference? I'd like to see this "bloom" effect on the rolloffs vs RAW in a motion clip.

Jim,

You might say you are old and tired, but everything that is coming out of RED is the result of the experience and wisdom in an "old" body, with the mind and passion of a twenty year old. So it is all relative.

The only time I feel old is when I read Reduser to much! Now, dealing with and patiently listening to some in this crowd will take years off your life.

Somehow, I think you have a lot left in you... :)

PS: Go through the threads here with a pen and paper in your hand. Give every positive remark a 1 and every negative remark a 10. The score will surprise you.

There was a time, way back when Noah was a pup and Mr. J. posted a premise on dvinfo.net and subtitled his moniker as "Madman". There were exciting times then and surely since within the four walls of the enterprise. So much has evolved since in so short a timeframe.

Tired? - Life should ideally be lived in balance, more so as the years gain. However there then emerges a dilemma.

So many people who are intensively self-driven achievers may find themselves lost when there is no longer a hard road with a solid goal at the end to be striven for. Most severely struck sometimes are those who have reached the pinnacle of their profession which demands a very highly developed but narrow skill set.

They simply do not have a diversity of other skills and interests and stare down the barrel of never again being able to master a new choice to the same degree. For such people, "playing at" can be quite depressing. Sadly so many just wither.

As they contemplate their last ten more years or so of expectations, sometimes they may become compelled to ask themselves, what in the hell was that all for?

Mr. Jannard seems to have constructed more diversity for himself in his ventures. If the prime goal all along with RED was to make for himself a better personal video camera, I think he might have just about done it and made quite a few people happy along the way.

It is perhaps a little sad that the adventure has played a part in seeing film off. If not RED, then surely the other players not too far down the track albeit they were sitting on their hands until somebody turned on a heater under their tails.

If Mr. J does decide on a break, my guess it will be for only so long as he is unable or unmotivated to conceive of a new adventure.

So let's indulge a bit of mischievious clairevoyance.

Q1. What is the point of the bestest, brightest, sharpest, economically priced camera in the world if you can't go where you want to go affordably, conveniently and fast?
Q2. How long can a Jack Russell really sit still in a yardfull of chickens?

I would not be entirely surprised :-

If he goes for a ride on the first commercial space-ride for paying passengers, finds it needs a tweak or two - and there goes the retirement plan./
If he surveys the moribund creative state of the high-value entertainment industry and commissions a few revolutionary projects via RED Studios to give the present status-quo a bit of a stir up./
If he takes it easy, grows a few grapes and presses some boutique RED wine - wouldn't be a rough red that's for certain./
If he does a Bill Gates and takes on a worthy cause as a retiring legacy.

Of course there is another consideration. - The man's life is really none of my business except to wish ongoing wellness, contentment and fulfilment. BTW. I don't own or use a RED but do respect achievement very muchly.

so many years and some still don't get it...wow
Well, RED implied that ISO was changed in Dragon. MX ISO *does* affect dynamic range. RED suggested that Dragon would be different somehow.
