  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon misconceptions and clarification...

Jim you make believers! Congratulations team!

What do they say .......if its not hard it's not worth doing.

Unfortunately, many manufacturers use a different methodology measuring S/N. The best bet is to have a single independent 3rd party do it and reference all cameras to the same methodology. We are in the process of doing just that.

Jim

Love it!! Not that I need to see this really, but the geek in me LOVES this! :)

0.02: Three separate testers each with their own methodology, with the individual results and their average presented in one paper along with their objective opinions

Jim, My wife will appreciate it if you slow down a bit. The bump to 16bit, 6k, ability to shoot higher compression has pushed me over, I'll order dragon this fall.

BTW, IMAX jim? you got to love IMAX! Would love to shoot a nature IMAX film on a 70mm sensor. But take your time :)

I took that to mean that the "sweet spot" on the sensor has increased 3 stops so you are less likely to lose info to noise if you shoot at ISO 2000 or to clipping if at ISO 200.

Bullshit.

64 is no age to mention if you make sure to eat healthy, exercise regularly and get a minimum of 6 hours of sleep (8 optimally) every night. Pick all three ;-)

Unfortunately, creating the best camera in the world is no excuse for staying healthy ;-)

I note that Jim has a penchant for late PM/early AM posts. Unless I miss my guess, he takes a nap, as most inventors/innovators. So the Go to bed advice is prolly already covered. If not and he starts to nap, next inovation on the way... As far as eating healthy and exercising...have you ever gone to a medical convention, with a large number of doctors. The fat, old ones far outnumber the old skinny ones. So, enjoy...whatever. ;-)

Thank you very much

Fury

very well put indeed.
Thank you for all your work

This is one thing we apparently have in common. It drives me crazy to wait. Being late is the most discomforting thing I can think of. The past year has been hell for me. Truly. The only thing I can say is that when it is finally done... you tend to forget how long you waited. Mercifully...

Jim

One misconception I had was that RED would eventually teach me how to wait.
But no, I'm still as inpatient as ever waiting for Dragon as for the R1, Build 16, MX ....
That titanium R didn't teach me anything.....

Jochen (is it September yet?)

Jim I am sorry but you have to wait for retirement. It is not ready for you yet!

Every single wait has been painful but well worth it.

The EPIC one hurt, but tragic world events caused that, so it is easily forgivable.

Dragon hurts less, because I have had an EPIC in my hands. :)

I think that patience is my karmic lesson in this life, but I still can't get used to waiting.

Without You, the digital cinema maybe stays at 2/3 sensor and 1080 on tapes ... I am so proud to be on the list of "patient zero" that Ted made recently. You guys launch the best innovative tools for cinematographers, others are followers ...

Been shooting my MX Epics madly the last 3 days, I have to tell you... that I really noticed the difference between the MX and the Dragon. I couldn't believe in 2 to 3 days of using the Dragon, that I would convert so quickly to it...

That said, the images we captured over the last 3 days are still amazing. MX is still a great sensor ! Oh... and I put on a low pass filter today for a bit of fun, That was interesting. Really flattened out the top end and looked quite nice, but really lost that sparkle and clarity... Really noticed it with sparkled water from a back lit jet ski scene we shot today.
I'm in two minds.
At least I can work backwards from a non filtered look. But I can see the attraction of both.

The only attraction to IN camera Baking filters such as the Low Pass LowCon filter, are for those that want immediate results off the camera, and those that don't want to do the leg work or do not know out to, or do not want to pay some one to do, or do not have the time to spend doing or just don''t care to.

Yet as in Photography with the advent of the Move from Film to Digital and the introduction of RAW, I saw all of those continuing to shoot JPEG as an insult to the technology available, which not only LIMITED them extremely, as there is simply no turning back in glory form JPEG's as there is none to try returning gloriously from In camera Filter Baked images.

But I guess an option would not hurt any one shooting RAW, it is just an option, one which I know I will never use or allow to use on any of my projects, to which I will always hold the final control in POST with infinite possibilities to go to form the original RAW!!

I can't ever imagine retiring, but I've never made my life as meaningful or worked as hard as Jim.

The addition of a low-con LP filter option is a good idea; " ...we are now looking at adding a low-con LP filter option which you can change out with your original. It certainly gives the appearance of more dynamic range because the rolloff “blooms” or softens the transition. It is a baked in look however if it is done in camera. "

I second this.

Well said!!!
There's almost always a way to top your own work
....a Medium Format Dragon for example :). Well, it depends...

Well that includes pretty much the entire industry. I also believe you cannot achieve exactly the same thing in post, to replicate what that filter does optically. Nor can you add color information in the DI suite which wasn't recorded in the first place.
