Dragon in India

Summicron vs Cooke S4 /i

Summicron vs Cooke S4 /i

Hi guys, don't write here to often but read quite a lot ....
All that I can say about Dragon coverage is that we received two Dragons here in Paris last week and we tested it with the new Leica Summicron-C... the little guys all covers the full 6K.
Please have a look @ our facebook Page : https://www.facebook.com/rvzlocation

That's good to know Sam. I am still holding out for my prime set. I hope Cooke S4 /i will cover the Dragon as well as the Summicron-C.

As far as I know Cooke S4i 18mm has a coverage problem on EPIC itself.....

Please correct me if I am wrong....

Thanks

Hi Ketch,

Of course, please stop by on your next trip to Paris, we're a pretty young camera rental, but we do what ever we can to make people understand that shooting Red is the real deal...
It will be a pleasure to meet you...

After a week with Dragon we can say ,it's a major step forward, it's not as magical in low light as Monochrome is but what comes out of this new sensor is much much better in every ways.
specially skin tones, high lights and dynamic range.....

Sam,
in low light not be a champion, what do you mean?
Did you make any test at 2000 ISO and is clean? up to how much you push?

thanks for your sharing.

Hi Luigi,

Didn't say it is not a champion, 2000 Iso is really better that what it looked like with MX, I 'd personally go for 1600.
But as I said Dragon is way better in every way it's the more "Cinematic" digital camera that I have ever used..

Ciao Sam,
thanks for your reply.
1600 are excellent
You have already 'tried with motion mount?
I'd like to know if 800 iso with Dragon and motion Mount, be the same as the MX 800 iso?

I like that explanation actually. Cinematic feels appropriate. It doesn't really have a digital signature to the image. Feels more or less organic, which feels new and fresh too. Highlight roll-off is also a leap over Mysterium-X for sure.

Great, we'll do if all works out, I'll make it part of the "New Dragon project" and will come strait from Germany to you, then off to Swiss land and to Spain, then back home to LA!!

As far as the Dragon vs. Monochrome MX, I have found this two Sensor very distinct from each other, in just about EVERY way, Monochrome IMO Rocks all the way, and there is absolutely NO other way to shoot B&W, no desaturation will ever work with the same results, eve if shot on Dragon, and that is why I made the decision early on, that we would shoot both Dragon and Monochrome for my short Film ," The Red Dress" and it has worked out truly beautifully!!

But yeah, other then B&W, DRAGON outdoes any and every camera I ever used that is currently on the market and few that aren't yet, Skin tones, color, Noise floor, light sensitivity, Dynamic Range, etc. all have NO equals.

But I must say that for B&W, while current Monochrome sure does an incredible job, to work on feature projects side by side with the Dragon, I will eagerly await the coming of the DRAGON Monochrome, and will be most likely one of the very first to buy one, and this time put it to use like there is no tomorrow!!

At the end of the day the new DRAGON sensor truly has no equals... Yet, I would not make comparison with a sensor that is free of RGB filer, such as the Monochrome, as this are two entirely different animals... Each designed to achieve a specific job, one to create the most stunning RGB Motion imagery ever captured, and the other designed to create the most stunning B&W Motion imagery ever captured... ;)

I'm really looking forward to seeing what Fincher and Cronenweth do with the Dragon.

Do you reckon a single person out of the millions who see the film who actually notices that it was shot with a Dragon! Let's be realistic - we're still very much talking about evolution rather than revolution here.

I will ask Santosh Siwan if the new Optimo DP 25-250 covers 6K on Dragon. As per the specs it covers S35+ : 31.4mm Diagonal.

We recently tested the the new Optimo 25-250 DP on the Dragon & it covered 6K alright. Though it had the minutest vignette on 25, but since it was a prototype lens, we have been assured by Angenieux that it will be taken care of in the production units. It might just go on to be one of the more popular zoom lenses for Dragon on two accounts; cost & the "Optimo" quality!

Well you could see much much nicer mid tones, highlights and cleaner shadows. I don't know what would you call a revolution. Maybe some future super low-light "fireflies and starlight is enough" sensor and 20+ stop native high dynamic range sensor with ridiculous overexposure latitude all-in-one product, we'll see. Until Dragon, the most tasty image and by the way very pleasing grain structure (with slight chroma denoise pass) that I've seen and messed with was out of Sony's RAW footage, it's just that rich. Then at the point when I thought the image couldn't get more "organic" or "cinematic" with CMOS sensors out of the box w/o any LUT trickery, Dragon came around.

Well that's the sort of thing I'm talking about - I'll be amazed if I come out of the cinema and hear people say "that was amazing, did you see those mid tones, highlights and cleaner shadows". It's not that big a deal in the overall experience, just a gradual incremental improvement. I'd also be surprised if you went for a job and was turned down because you only had an Epic X and not a Dragon. Maybe I'm wrong...

For the general audience who doesn't speak the language of cinema cameras and tools the only thing that is of real concern is the qualtiy of the material and content itself. This is something that can be seen and felt, but for some would be nearly impossible to explain if they aren't familiar with whats going on.

I am confident that the country of cinema lovers, India will be running faster in adoption of the beast(DRAGON).

Heh. There's a lot of people stateside and especially in LA who want it real bad. There's a few motion pictures already shooting with Dragon and more on the way. I sort of think this will be a global event once they start going out in numbers.

It's sort of an interesting thing. I've enjoyed using Mysterium-X for years now and I'm nice and comfy with how really get the most out of it, but now that I've had a taste of the Dragon candy it's difficult not to want more of it.

yes Phil, i agree. it is and will be a Global Event. i have enjoyed grading Mysterium-X for years now and feel if it is shot properly & post perfectly it looks topclass.
now in the age of dragon, i am starting to feel like a Dragon Warrior(Grader)....hahaha.

But i still hope India could jump on its big number of films in a year on Dragon.
