Dragon in India

It would appear that there was another Dragon sighting in India this week.

Santosh Sivan, ASC and ISC, tested out the Red Dragon and the new Angenieux zooms recently and will be shooting with the camera on their next feature filming in November with a May 2014 release.

While I think Mr. Fincher and Mr. Cronenweth will technically herald the "first Dragon" feature being shot currently with Gone Girl, it's nice to see more Dragons doing more things out there around the world.

While used on Transformers first, Gone Girl will be the first shot entirely on Dragon from what I know.

Dragon is such a huge leap forward for digital, I wonder if directors who religiously shoot on film will finally adopt after these movies are released. Tarantino quickly comes to mind.

Aesthetically there will still be holdouts for a variety of reasons and it's certainly a validated medium. However, the color, dynamic range, burn out to overexposure, and highlight roll-off should convert a good chunk of those who had lots of things to say about Mysterium-X.

They'll need to see it to believe it and I hope they test it similarly to what I just did. It tells you a lot. There's essentially no digital footprint to that footage. And that was material pushed around in the grade a bit. I've already been showing that footage and the raw material to folks. I know Peter Collister's test footage was shown to a good deal of film folks as well.

I will ask Santosh Siwan if the new Optimo DP 25-250 covers 6K on Dragon. As per the specs it covers S35+ : 31.4mm Diagonal.

All that I can say about Dragon coverage is that we received two Dragons here in Paris last week and we tested it with the new Leica Summicron-C... the little guys all covers the full 6K.

Congratulations on the Dragon Sam. That's great news with the new Summicron-C primes. Do you have a full set?

We only had the Summicrons for a few tests, it was a prototype set, but they look really nice and you can't beat the small size.
Leica says it's build in japan and that they will be able to produce it faster than Summilux (wich is not difficult).

Looks like a Leica-Fujinon colabo....

Anyway it a really beautifull set.

We have 3 sets of Summicrons coming because they Cover full 6K on Dragon, and even so we still do have a set of Summilux, I might at the end just refuse it, I am kind of Pissed off at Band Pro any ways, so not doing business with them would be a pleasure... and extremely happy that the Summicron are sold directly by my friends @ Leica...

I should be shooting some Dragon+ Summicron soon, either in Germany before going back to LA or in LA directly at the new Leica Store with Seth.


If I make it out to Paris before I go, I'll stop by and say hi.

No way in hell QT would "betray" celluloid. For what I know he hates even digital projection, with passion. Pfister and Nolan will go all-digital long before him, since both stated they would probably use digital in some distant future, when sensors will finally provide images miles better than film in every possible way. One cinematographer believes modern Vision3 film stock has 18 stops of latitude, I personally don't see that much of highlight projection myself, but I have no access to the classified UFO film scanners. What I know, that the images today's digital sensors producing look much better than last year's, if it doesn't look good enough for you today, then it will tomorrow.

The guys who love visual aesthetics of film, random round grain texture and whatnot, and also happy with that workflow, won't jump ship just because there's new fancy high dynamic range sensor out, which likely is more sensitive than film in both ways. But on the other hand you also have format-agnostic shooters like Matthew Libatique, who love film and still shoot film, but use digital cameras they think look as good as film and intercut well.

This is just what I'm afraid of, that we'll get a bad of bad movies because people were so crazy about getting their Dragon films out, they'll rush and won't make them perfect.

These are some reputed filmmakers. Their first priority is to make good films that appeal to their audience. Whether it is shot in Dragon or not doesn't matter to their audiences. 99.9% have no clue about technology nor do they care. To think that someone will sacrifice his film just to proclaim the first to shoot on a particular camera is preposterous. And mind you, its not just the cinematographer. It is the director who decides whether the film is upto his vision.

Soon enough we'll hear their thoughts, looking forward to it. Ridley used the Epic before, now he's using Dragon. If he's sold, you know it's a good image acquisition system.
