  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Flare

Hey Phil,
Any chance you can recommend the best quality 4x5.65" ND filter series for Dragon (with new OLPF) by specific BH Photo store link? Lots to chose from - I want to buy these once. Also looking at graduated ND's for landscape work.
Thanks!

Agreed - not sure I'd want a LOWCON filter permanently glued to front of my sensor...

Thinking of special applications. Astro photography, infrared, military applications where a feature film image isn't what people are going for. 1/8th low con goes on the front when I want to soften highlights a bit.

The he interchangeable OLPF might be for a wide variety of specialized imaging applications, where they want to eliminate specific frequencies in the spectrum. Not everyone is fixated on Alexa.

There are some new neutral 4x5.6 nd filters out of Japan that are really great.

Are you referring to the TrueND brand from Japan? If so, I thought those have IR filtration in them which isn't needed on the Dragon.

According to Phil and Evin. Plus the motion mount has built in nd. Although clarity on this would be nice. I:) tend not to Put a lot of nd in the optical path, so the contamination issues are minimized, so not a big issue for me.

We of course have done our best so you don't need these kinda filters anymore on Dragon / MM, but some people are still going to use them no matter what (as the question implies) and if you are, then these seem to be some of the best.

This really have some of the best neutrality qualities to them and indeed they do not spill any array of colors any were, and to some this is most important then others...

There was a group buy sometime ago: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?102965-Group-Buy-True-ND-Filters-from-BandPro

I still prefer the Schneider and now only use their regular ND's because of Dragon+MM combo, and you guys really did an insane job on controlling the IR btw!!

And just an other chance to say thanks to Phil of his ND tests... ;)

Quality regular NDs on Dragon for me means either Tiffen or Schneider. You'll want glass filters. Avoid resin if possible. Also, avoid that weird glass/film combination stuff. It just doesn't last.

Here's a link to 1.8 NDs at B&H as requested:

Schneider:

I do know that in about 2-3 months there will be some new NDs that I will need to test extensively that will very likely be the most consistent across the range due to a slightly new method of making these, but that's 3 months away.

Yep. Here's how it breaks down for me in regards to IR Filtration and Red Cameras:

Mysterium-X:

- If looking for the best "out of camera" image you'll want a Hot Mirror/IRND Combo Filter Solution.
*I personally would recommend Tiffen followed closely by Formatt on this front.

- If you don't mind white balancing in camera and/or post you'll be happy with IRNDs.
*Tiffen, Schneider, Mitomo True NDs, Formatt, and others.

- Motion Mount, with the MM you don't actually need IR protection as the IR Cut is built into the Motion Mount.

General concepts:

Approximately around 0.9 ND (3 stops) strength and stronger you will really want some sort of IR protection with your ND filters. Ideally, you would have all of your filters matching.

Dragon:

- Dragon has a much more optimized and useful IR Cut built into the OLPF. You don't need IR protection from 0.3-3.0 ND. Just regular NDs will do.

- If using IRNDs the same logic exists, you will need to white balance in camera and/or in post to get a correct looking image.

- Dragon + Motion Mount, same deal, you don't need any additional IR filtration.

Remember IRNDs merely "tint" the magenta cast, essentially combating it with it's complimentary. Hot Mirrors however cut Infrared Light. Two different methods that lead to two different results.

"Up until 3.0"

That is pretty rad...

I don't have anything stronger to test! Though I guess I can stack them and shoot with the T1 Vantage Ones outside :)
