  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Flare

Hi Guys,

is there any News on if Currently new OLPFs are available to be built in Cameras that go back for OLPF Replacement?

thanks!

Hey Alex i dont think I understand the question?

Hi Jarred,

sorry i might have missed the Information if it was stated somewhere, but just wanted to make sure if i send my Dragon back to US now that you have already healthy supplies of OLPFs over there that can go in the Camera straight away?

thanks !

IMO using a hot mirror in the first tray - I have been very happy with the Schneider 750 Tru-Cut - with regular ND behind is the best choice. Yes, more glass in the optical path is sub optimal, but so is using an IRND that has a correction profile poorly matched to the sensor/processing of a particular camera on a given day.

Keep in mind that a combo filter adds a set amount of green/magenta compensation based on the strength of the ND - just a little at .6, quite a bit at 2.1. In the real world there are a number of variables, starting with heat/ambient temperature, that can skew the actual IR energy levels independent of the ND level desired for a particular shot. Anyone want green skin tones that have to be fixed in post just because the right combo filter to get the desired stop brought too much compensation to the party?

In my own work I have learned that the 750 Tru-Cut is sometimes beneficial even when little or no ND is desired - overcranked fire dancers for example. I also have shot with 1.2 and 1.8 ND and no hot mirror in situations where I needed every bit of real chroma in pale skin and could live with minor color shifts in wardrobe or set. Moreover, I have noted substantial differences in how certain fabrics read in direct sunlight in terms of IR. I did a poolside shoot with 1.2+ ND where darker colored synthetic swimwear showed huge shifts without the hot mirror but cotton fabrics showed just a tinge, even at 1.8. YMMV.

Cheers - #19

I believe that you will get an email when Red is ready for your Dragon OLPF switch.

Mark, which brand are you using? My Schneider's seem to be going magenta.

Hey CJ - Interesting. I mostly stock Formatt & Tiffen - and I THINK my initial testing was all on Tiffen - but I'll compare and re-test when I'm back in NYC as i'm out in LA this week teaching at Reducation, etc.

I think what He means is if the new OLPF's are ready (built) so to go in the cameras awaiting for them, which are already out with the original one.... At list this is how I read it... ;)

yes thats how it is, i was referring to Dragons already out in the world with the old OLPF, and if RED is already completely ready to switch in the new OLPF into these cameras, or if it is gonna be a couple of more days.

One of our Dragon "Upgraded" has just recently been shipped with installed the new OLPF, so they are already there, question is only to see the time frame based on the amount of them they might have in stock, and how many Dragonized cameras are already out to do the OLPF swap.

Either way, all of those that have a Dragon with original OLPF as our Dragon M8, will receive an email form Red Support to notify that the camera can go back for the OLPF swap.

ketch , is there any way to know if a shot comes from a dragon withOLPF by checking the R3D metadata ?
if i am getting some dragon footage from a job , how would i know ?not that would change the workflow i mean in terms of judging the footage ... and many times for big jobs directors or even DP would just rent the car , they would know know about this this things ...

thanks

Im not sure what OLPF I have.... Some say it should not look red when looking at it mine is a bit grenish, rainbow red... When holding a lighter infront of the lens in darkness I do not see the "old olpf flare" and when shooting agains carlights and such in the dark the flairs looks just fine / balanced and blue... So to me it looks like a fine new OLPF... but how do I know or sure? I guess asking red would give an answer but I figure you guys would know....

Dragon looks pretty green... Old and possibly new (I would not know yet about the new.)

If you get magenta halo around matches etc (just crank the images up to see), you have old, if not, probably new.

I did not get the polkadots on the prototype, so I guess that is not an indicator.

So no easy way of knowing I guess and what ever is in there looks smashing. I'm just curious if I need to send this baby back to have it updated... But are there any other new olpf dragons out. Mine came like a week ago from red and they had it for over a months time so I figured they waited to put the new one in... well guess I need to send alex at red europe and email and ask.
