  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Flare

I think that that is new OLPF. I think at some point soon RED will say that "every camera that left red after this date and time" has the new OLPF.

Ketch, for example has had multiple cameras upgraded but only m8 has the old OLPF, so I would guess that your is new bjorn.

I guess it's the old one.. when cranking up iso I kind of see a red ball around the light source.

But it seams much mor subtile than I seen on tests here in the forum.

since the new OLPF means new calibration as well , which apparently means 1+ more stop of DR in the highlight ..

i would like to know from RED if there is a way to tell ( at least from R3D metadata) if a camera have the old or the new ...

otherwise is all getting very confusing and we don't know what we are looking at ...

it is pretty subtle....

Subtle but still there... If this is the new olpf that is kind of a bummer.

Bjorn, what ISO did you pump that shot up to?

Tomorrow, get Machete 599 just upgraded to DRagon, it should have the new OLPF.
Making quick tests with the CArbon with the old OLPF.
I'm also curious to see the difference.

That was 4000 iso.... this is screendump of 12800 iso...

Hmm... I thought I had the new stuff all along.

So I have to say, still with the old olpf this camera rips, and if I get more stops of DR with a new olpf ontop of what's there now, then thats it's nuts.

Ok, so when does the "olpf" upgrade program start :)

have you tested cheap black fabrics under hot sun?

Yes. Frame right and this is with a regular and strong ND even:

So you might ask, is the IR Cut still as effective and what's the net results on the color utilizing hard Neutral Density Filtration?

Daylight - ND 2.7

IR Cut performance is still wonderful. You will not need additional IR Filtration with the New OLPF on Dragon. You just want regular NDs. I have tested 0.3-2.7 ND.

If you look extremely closely you will notice color has slightly improved overall. Additionally in shadows and highlights IR contamination has been eliminated with the New OLPF. Those blue shadows are extremely pure (check out the sky in the Sun Flare image too). White highlights are white. Dark shadow areas are clean. You may noticed that chroma is richer in the 2800K WB/ISO 2000 Match test image as well. Good stuff.

Our Carbon Epic left RED 8 days ago with the old one..

the new or old OLPF is in the metadata of the r3d according to a recent post. Call your bomb squad rep or check your metadata to see if you can tell which OLPF is in there. Plus you need to be on the latest firmware, calibration and do a black shade.

Phil I want to thank you again for all your hard work.

Cheers Robert.

If you're curious when I test black (at least what's in the above frame), I'm testing:

- Cotton
- Duvetyne
- Wool
- Nylon/Cordura
- Vinyl
- Plastic

The coat in that test image is from the 1998 Warner Brothers Paul W. S. Anderson film Soldier starring Kurt Russell.

From these guys:

This particular coat is the minigun man's.

I have a few odd bits of wardrobe I've been able to collect from various projects over the years that have become normal subjects of camera tests. The Superman shirt is one of the crew shirts from Superman Returns. Can't remember where the wool hat came from. Might be Gangs of New York or something. It's been in one of my hat boxes and there are some strange ghosts in those.

That is what I have been saying all along... ;)

OLPF swaps already started, and new cams are going out with it as well... You should be getting an email form Red support to let you know you an now send the camera back for the OLPF swap.

So wait,

RED are doing OLPF swaps before getting through all the group 1 upgrades? Um. I think I need to call my bomb squad rep. Cameras are going in twice before some people get their upgrade?

Can anyone from RED confirm this?

From what I understand you'll dealing with two different lanes.

Upgrades and new bodies getting the new tech and previous Dragon's getting called back for the new tech.

Phil answered first... ;)

But I like to add that I believe, judging from what Jarred has been relating, people would be truly hard pressed to actually believe how many "DRAGON" assembly lines are actually at work...

One for the Carbon Dragons

One for the Upgrade call in Dragons

One for the OLPF swap Dragons

And I am sure there few extra assembly lines in there for NAB... Assembling yet some other cool cameras/gear that will blow our mind on the NAB floor come April... ;)

Thanks guys.

I hope I get the call soon. Am in group 1 but still no e-mail.

Cheers!
