  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon / Epic / Scarlet Camera Beta Build 5.1.29

anyways jarred, on topic...

are we talking potentially about better compression and/or framerates - specifically for scarlet?

or does this just mean the good news is there will be a few guys selling off their used media... :)

Brian dont mind Robert.. he is a bit disillusion and thinks that technology should stop innovating at the exact moment when he buys something so that nothing ever evolves past him.

He is that guy that goes around and burns down " On Sale " signs as he is outraged by the thought of anyone paying less than he did for anything.

He always has these rants whenever new things come out or prices change, so just ignore the guy and carry on.

I have no idea why this guy is a RED customer.. The fundamental foundation of our company opposes his moral beliefs that nothing should ever change or be up-gradable and everything should be artificially expensive.

Yes, unbelievable.

Just don't post any comments on his rants, he'll come around if he's smart...

Dear Jarred - people talk about the legacy my Grandfather left which I protect daily ... The legacy you have created with Jim & the RED Team, is nothing short or remarkable (...in fairly short time too...). The fact that you respond to legitimate issues quickly, and always outdo yourselves (& the competition) is not lost on anyone who is in this for all the right reasons.

Many of us appreciate you and what you do more than you know.

Great move. One minimag to rule them all! Logical and feels just right...
1TB on the horizon, whoa!

And again, real modular design proves its strengths. Thats always sooooo cool to see.

Oh, and btw, good firmware release, thanks RED. Installing it right now. :)

that's funny :-)

I like new faster better and usually smaller. But the mag's physical size has never been an issue to me on the contrary, we bought 4 red mags and they are all still here, I do not know how many flash and compact flash cards I bought trough the years but every time I need such it's lost, I think it has to do with their smaller size.

So to me it would be a shame if the "big" line of mags was to be discontinued... or will there come more, better, faster "big mags" (like the current size) aswell....?

satire? its an upgrade for newer tech.even 500$ is awesome price for an upgrade.Thank god i didnt buy any SSDs.used my friends card all the time

expect the new mini mag side SSD module to cost about the same as the current Epic side SSD module.

i am not going to get excited either way about this....i like lighter and smaller and faster with more capacity.....i don't expect a significantly lower price but in reality SSD prices have come WAAAY down and we should see an improvement there as well....
for me this will probably come out around the same time my epic goes in for dragon and i will probably/hopefully switch over to these smaller mini ones then....
what i really want is the XL module....

Fuji Cabrio support

Fuji Cabrio support

Jarred,

For the next round of firmware, I'd love to see if we can get Fuji Cabrio support! I've had mine for over a year and would love to be able to use the lens data/information. Thanks in advance!

It will be great to have the support for Fuji Cabrio.

Will there be a mini to regular adapter for the new mini-mags so we can use them in our existing side modules and readers?

i obviously know just as much as anyone here but since jarred mentioned 6g and the old ones are 3g, i doubt an adapter would make a lot of sense...
it would be great to be able to trade in the old side SSD but i doubt that will happen, does not make much sense for red to take those back....
but in reality the existing SSDs are in no way outdated or somewhat inferior just because these new mini ones are out....it will be interesting to see how cheap people will sell their "old" ones for just to get the latest....
6g is faster and will open the door to further speed improvement of course but in order to get higher compression/fps, the internals have to be able to spit it out faster as well and that is the bottleneck....not necessarily the write speed of the SSDs....dragon can probably take advantage of the higher write speeds...
but what do i know...either way, i am all for lighter, faster, better and if it is cheaper as well, it really would not hurt either....

Go red go. Smaller, faster, Cheaper.

Now that you can buy an off the shelf 1tb samsung ssd that does 500MB/s R/W with un-compressible data for <$500, I hope the min-mag pricing follows suit.

Added support for Canon EF 400mm f/2.8

Good to see your updating canon lens support, what ever happened to adding support for the Canon gen III 2x and 1.4x extenders?
Support was only a few builds away back in 2012...

Extender support is not really integrated yet.. you just got lucky. Some lenses require minimal effort to pass data through to function, Right now with the 70-200, the 200 2.8 and the 200 2.0 will work with AF, Focal Length and IS. . All other longer lenses will only partially work till the code is fully implemented. sometimes if you put the IS on on the lenses that are not supported yet AF will stop functioning yet.
Proper support will happen in next couple builds.

The Red SSDs are already so small, it's odd to see a new standard being introduced. Did the bus speed on the one we have now not cut the mustard? I'd rather see the existing media become more competitively affordable and the introduction of a super cheap 16gb for firmware and looks. The introduction of an entirely new physical media is perplexing from my use, rental needs and overall marketpoint vantage. Crew often don't prefer my 256gb and want to use 128gb (or they just pretend it's a 128), I'd imagine the 512 is more than we need for the lifespan of Dragon.

How so? Of course we couldn't use them at full speed, but they would operate within the parameters of the current REDMAGs. This could be a handy device for those of us with a significant existing investment in the current REDMAG hardware and provide a nice option to begin purchasing the new mini-mags without inconveniencing ourselves in the use of the old.

We already gain increased abilities with the 512GB REDMAGs in terms of compression ratios. Dragon should most certainly benefit from the faster media and most likely has increased bandwidth to support it. 6Gbps isn't all that fast when it all boils down to data interfaces these days. SAS/SATA are about to go 18/12 Gbps in the coming year and some interfaces like PCIeSATA and Thunderbolt are already faster than that. 6K 16bit RAW at 24fps should be about 900MB/s + audio and other overhead. Assuming the mini-mags can sustain close to the maximum throughput of the 6Gbps connection, the best compression ratio possible on Dragon at 6K full 24fps is probably going to be between 2 and 2.5 to 1. Which is what we can have with the current REDMAGs (particularly the 512GB mag) on the 5K MX sensor. So it seems these new mags are a timely upgrade.

In reality, I will probably be swapping out all my REDMAG hardware -- side modules, mags, readers. To maintain the competitive edge with hardware and acquisition quality, it's just going to be a necessary process and something that can be worked at over the coming months.
