  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon / Epic / Scarlet Camera Beta Build 5.1.29

Um... Just wondering? If the new cards are faster, could that mean that we can get more fps out of Dragon?

i think RED is gonna come up with new compression types..maybe 1:1 (Full) ? or different uncompressed options since nobody cares about bigger data files anymore. (shot 7TB with different camera in 1 day)

Good to see your updating canon lens support, what ever happened to adding support for the Canon gen III 2x and 1.4x extenders?
Support was only a few builds away back in 2012...

There was a technical issue with the amount of pins getting that done...

Between full auto and pure manual there is a lot of potential

+1 for robust Fujinon Cabrio integration. The servo hand grip houses motors for focus, iris and zoom. IF, not sure if its possible, but IF the pins on the PL mount can supply sufficient power AND full FIZ controllability, it opens up a huge range of functionality.

Its easy to dismiss anything "ENG" as crude, artless junk but a lot of that is guilt by association. Are ENGish capabilities like ergonomics, operational convenience and optional "auto" features inherently bad? A lens like the Cabrio doesn't force you to operate in a particular manner, it simply provides more options. FWIW, I expect a new generation of lenses hitting the marketplace over the next few years to leverage a host of technologies to create AI enabled hybrids where the operator can "manage" assist functionality - think paddle shifters on sports cars.

I love how this Beta build thread turned into a Mini Mag thread. But this is indeed great news. One day, I'll hold one in my hand, I'll shed a tear and then die happily!

Thanks for the Sigma 18-35 support as well! I've been waiting :)

Wow, this is great.

I knew there had to be a reason I got the "RED Survival Guide" shipped to me along with my new quick plate. It lists the mini-mags in there, as well as the minimag reader.

For those who may be curious, these are the prices listed in the Survival Guide (with a Spring 2013 date printed as well, things will probably change with details next month)

RED MiniMags:

64GB - $395
128GB - $575
256GB - $925

RED MiniMag Reader - $250

you guys need to give me a list of lenses you want supported so we can get them in.. the Fuji is not going to work as it pulls too much power.

Disregard those prices... those are for the slow speed mags that were intended to record 1080p proxy files. The new cards are for the big guns.

Jarred, Next lens that would be great is the Sigma 120-300 2.8 monster. would love to have IS supported if possible.

thanks big time

Crap! I was gettin' horny for a double handful of cards at those prices.

I love all the great new stuff. Mega thanks for the developments and I am eagerly awaiting my Dragon update email.
BUT. Please, some Nikon glass love? My Ti mount is happy with my 1.4 primes and my 14-24. Could Red add a few more, such as the great 17-55 f/2.8 and the 600 f/4? Pleeeeeease? Or let us set up custom lenses. If that is possible, I sure can't figure it out. My Epics asks about custom lens setup when I mount an unsupported lens. It goes through some gyrations. But often the lens still does not operate properly and I cannot find a way to save a custom lens. Beat me over the head with a C-stand if I am posting this in the wrong place, but then just pin a note to my shirt saying you still love Nikon...

MiniMag readers with ThunderBolt please.

Assuming that 6G eSATA and USB3 data rates exceed the maximum read speed of the new MiniMags then we don't "need" TB. That said, I'm planning to move as much interfacing as possible to TB over the next year as it offers the most compelling mix of speed, topology options and cost I'm aware of. USB3 is great, but AFAIK real world max throughput is 280MB/s which I expect will become rather frustrating in the world of big data. 6G eSATA is technically great, but other than adding a host bus adapter (HBA) to a tower or laptop expansion slot what are you plugging that into? eSATA was designed for internal connections, not external - how many computers ship with a standard external 6G eSATA port?

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the USB3 and 6G eSATA ports, just suggesting that TB support would be even more useful.

Not surprised to hear that the PL mount pins are unable to supply sufficient power to the Fuji, fortunately D-tap and other solutions are available. Currently I tape over the pins when using the Cabrio, some have reported odd behavior otherwise, likely because the lens tries to draw power from the pins first (Fuji has been updating their firmware so perhaps this is solved now?).

IAC, if Fuji is willing to work with RED and vise versa, could we perhaps have a firmware handshake or toggle that shuts off the power circuit via the pins?

IF power issues at the pins could be eliminated, could we then have robust FIZ and lens data integration?

Excited to see what these new cards are capable of, but I actually really like the size of the current SSDs!

Yeah, I think it was Phil who originally suggested the new capacity cards with faster speeds are going to be targeted toward the big players, more than likely. I imagine Peter Jackson will purchase the first thousand or so as they become available.

But if they serve to bring down the price of the current SSDs, well... that's a good thing.

Yep. As we move to higher capture and deliverable resolutions I think the demand for larger capacity cards is going to be useful. I also know a few people, while not something you do often, who want to shoot LONG takes. I had to do this myself shooting Coachella in 4K and keep rolling while a full performance takes place. That's sometimes a 45-90 minute take or even longer. The speed gains of eSata 6G are welcome from top to bottom for DITs.

Something that's not shown in the video, but something somebody somewhere will ask, is that if you upgrade to the new MiniMag Side SSD Module and are a Dragon owner does it also get engraved with "Dragon" to help identify what you're shooting with?
