  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon / Epic / Scarlet Camera Beta Build 5.1.29

Still waiting to hear if there will be a rear mounted mini mag SSD module that will work in concert with the current side SSD module and SSDs.

thanks for fixing the sigma 18-35 bug!
will be getting the new sigma 24-105 soon, any idea if IS will work?

I think I'll just stick with my existing $10 000 investment in cards + $1500 for SSD module rather than plow even more money into an unknown advantage, but hey, thanks.

If this means Red is now going to sell media for dirt cheap, well, that's really going to hurt the people who invested real $$ and are still trying to amortize it. Red BT $3500 were already a punch in the face, as was the Epic price drop, please don't do yet one more thing to make people who buy rather than rent Red gear feel like complete idiots for doing so.

Those who say "It's all about your talent/passion.etc." for God's sake I can make the exact same projects with rented gear, so I don't see the relevance, and if you do see relevance, you should take a basic business accounting class.

Those who say I should be happy because now students/poor people etc. can have easier access I think I'd like to pick which charities I give to, not have Red force my hand The bad investment I made in Red Epic gear (which is almost impossible to rent or even to get on projects - price drop has meant way too many Epics around and base price affects rental price) has made it difficult for me to give to such worthy causes as the United College Fund, breast cancer research, and other causes I feel more worthy of my giving away money to than no-budget filmmakers.

Anyway, maybe this rant is for nothing…. If so, sorry.
Rob you are so lucky you dont own Alexa.Think about having Alexa and you have to pay same amount of money with RED EPIC to get new module records RAW on board.I think we all should appreciate RED in here too. They dont make new camera again or they dont charge you 20.000 $ for different module

So, could I be hopeful to think the current SSD mags, soon to be the "old ones" will sell at substantially discounted prices once the mini mags go on sale? Now, THAT would be a great boon to the thousands and thousands of R1 and Scarlet owners out there who understandably live by very thin budgets.

And PLEASE, don't anyone tell me they are competitively priced, yes they are, but they are still a SIGNIFICANT investment for most people.

I asked Jarred if there was a price reduction due on Red mags last night... maybe we'll get an answer when the mini-mags hit.

I'll be happy with current SSD's at a lower price :)

Canon 200-400 f4 - engaging the built in 1.4x extender causes control to be lost, if IS is enabled when lens is attached control is lost

Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC - IS currently does not work

you guys need to give me a list of lenses you want supported so we can get them in.. the Fuji is not going to work as it pulls too much power.

Could we get an update on the Nikon Mount? Last communication I got from the bomb squad seemed like it was "dead in the water" as far as progress.

I need to get a Nikon Mount soon and am not concerned with autofocus at this point. Just as long as the aperture control works on G lenses. So far I have not been able to ascertain a definitive answer on if it actually works - on all lenses. So many users seem to have different experiences.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.

These free upgrades and tech advances are great …

But I was kinda hoping that Red can give us all a pony for Xmas … geez is it asking too much to have a simple chesnut coloured pony available (shipping included) to all Epic and Dragon owners at 195 USD , perhaps a brown version could also be made available for early adopters, I heard the Alexa owners have already got one of those cool mini sized hogs but it was 350… :):):)

Jarred, what about if you made the idata/LDS work with the Cabrios. I'm FINE with having power for it externally... I just wish with the $90K I spent in glass it would "work" with my camera, in terms of the lens data that other lenses have. Is this possible?

Brian dont mind Robert.. he is a bit disillusion and thinks that technology should stop innovating at the exact moment when he buys something so that nothing ever evolves past him.

He is that guy that goes around and burns down " On Sale " signs as he is outraged by the thought of anyone paying less than he did for anything.

He always has these rants whenever new things come out or prices change, so just ignore the guy and carry on.

I have no idea why this guy is a RED customer.. The fundamental foundation of our company opposes his moral beliefs that nothing should ever change or be up-gradable and everything should be artificially expensive.

gotta love Jarred ... :-))

This may be old news but has the flip flop screen been resolved in any of the firmware so I can use the 5" upside Down?

Many thanks

Suresh

We're happily using the Nikon mount with our own full set of G-lenses. 24, 35, 50, 85, 105, plus lots of zooms. Works perfectly. Looking forward to the Nikon Motion Mount...

We're also shooting on very special PL glass at the moment and eagerly awaiting our Xenon FF's.

Technology is a runaway freight train. You either get the hell out of it's way, jump on board, or get run over. Thanks to RED, my clients and I feel like we're riding shotgun and even helping to lay a few tracks. Prices be damned. Keep moving. Onward and up.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, because I've asked a bunch of questions about this and gotten a "we're working on it" answer, but not much more. And it's true. Each recent build has made Nikon lenses work better, and made more of them work, so they haven't abandoned the project.

At this point, the workhorse G lenses all seem to work for both aperture and focus. The 24-85 primes, the 70-200, 24-70, 14-24 zooms, also the 17-55 DX zoom seems to work well.

The 10.5 DX fisheye does not. Focus does not work at all, and aperture is not reliable. (But who cares? Not the most important lens, I know.)

Non-Nikkor lenses are not well-supported. The Tokina 11-16 doesn't work at all. It appears to control the aperture, but then aperture closes completely at the end of every shot. You have to unmount the lens and remount it to get the camera to talk to it again.

A Tokina 28-70 with a manual aperture (the Angie version) used to be held wide open all the time. Didn't work at all. But since Build 5.1 that problem is resolved. If I remember correctly, the camera even controls the iris.

All my longer lenses are fully manual, so I have nothing to share beyond the 200mm mark.

I don't know if this is true for Canon, but Nikon-mount lenses come various levels of support for the Nikon protocols. I have been hoping for some guidelines to help figure which might or might not work, but nobody at Red has been able or had the time to give that sort of guidance. Or maybe it's just not possible. (Nikon is like Microsoft, in that backward compatibility is given high priority, but it is a hard thing to maintain. I'm sure that makes things complicated.)

In any case, I believe that one clue to lenses that might not work is the number of contacts on the lens. I think that fewer-than-normal contacts indicate less-than-complete support for the protocols, and that's bad news. Both my Tokina 11-15 and Nikkor 10.5 have fewer contacts than the other G lenses.

There is a recent feature that offers to profile any lens the system doesn't recognize. I'm not sure what this does, and I haven't been able to find a word written about it in the manuals, but at the time it appeared, my Tokina 28-70 started working. Coincidence or cause and effect? I don't know. But they're probably related.

So... a good amount of stuff works. But it's a bit of a wild frontier. Enough stuff works that it stays on my Epic most of the time now. I have seen no problems with fully manual lenses. And I don't have many non-Nikkor auto lenses, just the two Tokinas I mentioned.

Autofocus is disappointing on all lenses. It searches forever. Nothing like the demonstrations I've seen of Canon auto focus. Recent builds are better, but not what I'd call useable in real life. On the other hand, focus tracking, once set, works like a dream. Go figure. So the camera can control focus just fine, it just can't seem to figure out where focus should be on its own.

Disclaimer: this is just my impressions. If I've got something wrong I'd love for someone from Red to chime in.
