Dragon / Epic / Scarlet Camera Beta Build 5.1.29

Please make a TB/USB3.0 combo reader. Pretty please, with lots of sugar on top.

…I just let Brook sell me some more of his 512GB cards. Oh, well. Anyway, can't wait for these mini mags!

I just bought a 512 too, now I feel like a chump, wish I had read this post 6 hrs. ago. Oh, well.

Yup I just bought 4 x 128 SSD's off Brook too...such is life I suppose!!

First.

Thanks Jarred!

second.

Could this his possibly mean that there will also be a mini module available replacing the existing side SSD? Might that be available at the same time as Dragon upgrades? Might it even make the whole camera just that much lighter?

Just keep making things better. I think many of your customers feel that way.

I think my investments are all safe, because everything still works! I've never had a fail on an SSD and they are still churning out cycle after cycle in rugged casing with reliable performance since day one. Hundreds of TB of media on those suckers! It's all how you want to look at it. Who ever wants to upgrade can. It's not like your media cards no longer work.

I have no idea what you are talking about since the MiniMag isn't going to be released till the end of the year, but If I were to guess:

No PRORES.. we still believe in a RAW workflow and that isn't going to change anytime soon.

Speeds increased.. so much so the readers are now 6G. Which aids in lower compression on camera, and much quicker offloading. Pretty nice since the cards are now half the size.

Looking forward to Pro Res Proxy module.

+1 on TB reader

really like the traditional readers especially if you have a Red Base Station be nice to have a 6G eSATA and Daisy Chain TB to replace the current FW800 and USB 3.0 instead of the mini-USB 2.0

As for downloading I try to recycle cards as frequent as possible so I'm always seeing the footage sooner that way you can leave at a reasonable time.

Large cards will be great for all the documentary Red guys or one man army cats with no time to offload.

Smaller cards will lighten your load, a stack of 1.8'' cards has a nice weight to it.

installing new Beta thx for the updates

will be interesting to see who will adopt these new cards.

If ya gonna make a thunderbolt reader, I suggest it be thunderbolt 2. Why look back :-)

Enjoy. Pretend you didn't read that last line :)

SOOO Nice update, thanks Jarred,
and minimag for my Dragon Carbon is possible? :)

(...)

If price cuts happen too often, only fools will continue to buy cameras - and in my experience fools have little money to spend. Well, very busy rental houses will buy cameras too, but that's not many sales for Red if they're the only ones buying- when that was the case people had to charge $250 000 a camera to pay for R&D.

I wonder of Red knows how many people decided NOT to buy an Epic after the price drop and the $3500 BTs. "Too risky - who knows what they'll do in 6 months" - this is an approximate quote from two owner-op friends here in Montreal. They both got an Alexa instead. Arri drops price slowly, is very careful to let their owners amortize their investment, very careful to never put anybody out of business. If Red behaved in a way that reassured potential investors, rather than just fanboys many of whom have little cash to spend, they would, I think, maybe make more money than they think.

(...)

Honestly... This is how things work with "any" company.

3 Months after Sony tried to sell the F35 for +100.000$ here, you could offload it from Sony for sub 10.000$

Nope, it was not announced web-wide, but you just had to show interest to get that offer.

Prices on these things change, as you and I and all well know, and what ultimately sets the price is use- and rentability, supply and demand.

RED did a terrific and unheard of thing with the R1, holding the price at and above original level for very long. They did a few things to make it like that, but it is not common.

Prices drop.
New products come.
Life moves on.

In the meantime we get great cameras and can do our best to make them make us a living.

I think I'll just stick with my existing $10 000 investment in cards + $1500 for SSD module rather than plow even more money into an unknown advantage, but hey, thanks.

If this means Red is now going to sell media for dirt cheap, well, that's really going to hurt the people who invested real $$ and are still trying to amortize it. Red BT $3500 were already a punch in the face, as was the Epic price drop, please don't do yet one more thing to make people who buy rather than rent Red gear feel like complete idiots for doing so.

Those who say "It's all about your talent/passion.etc." for God's sake I can make the exact same projects with rented gear, so I don't see the relevance, and if you do see relevance, you should take a basic business accounting class.

Those who say I should be happy because now students/poor people etc. can have easier access I think I'd like to pick which charities I give to, not have Red force my hand The bad investment I made in Red Epic gear (which is almost impossible to rent or even to get on projects - price drop has meant way too many Epics around and base price affects rental price) has made it difficult for me to give to such worthy causes as the United College Fund, breast cancer research, and other causes I feel more worthy of my giving away money to than no-budget filmmakers.

Anyway, maybe this rant is for nothing…. If so, sorry.

I'm not trying to pick a fight but your rant confuses me. I read it and part of me feels dumb for not being as upset as you appear to be but I really don't see a reason to be pissed-off at this time.

1) No price has been announced.

2) Dirt cheap? When has RED media ever been cheap? I can't find anything in Jarred's comments so far to indicate it would be cheap at all. Physically smaller, larger capacity and faster media sounds fairly expensive to me. I could be wrong.

I understand what drastically reduced prices would do to your business plan but your post reads less like expressing a concern and more like a reaction to actual events, which it's not.

You did throw in that last little bit at the end, which seems to indicate you know your rant is premature and may be unjustified but you felt like kvetching anyway.

This all sounds groovy, however, these new SSD minimag modules...how much, and when will they be in the Red Store? And when will they ship? I pre-ordered a whack of the minimags when they were first available but was never allocated any from Red -in part due to the fact they were meant to go with the Meizler.

I recall the CF to SSD upgrade on the R1. I received the SSD module but couldn't use it until Red Mags were available, which was about 6 weeks after the fact...are we to assume the minimags, the reader, and new module will all be available to ship at the same time? Don't mean to sound like a jerk (not at all intended) -it's just I've had a lot of tech on back order for a long time.

Looking forward to putting these new improvements into action!

Brian dont mind Robert.. he is a bit disillusion and thinks that technology should stop innovating at the exact moment when he buys something so that nothing ever evolves past him.

He is that guy that goes around and burns down " On Sale " signs as he is outraged by the thought of anyone paying less than he did for anything.

He always has these rants whenever new things come out or prices change, so just ignore the guy and carry on.

I have no idea why this guy is a RED customer.. The fundamental foundation of our company opposes his moral beliefs that nothing should ever change or be up-gradable and everything should be artificially expensive.
