  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why does Epic footage look so much better than the Red One?!

I gotta say after only having my epic for 2 days and doing the normal running around and shooting everything in sight, the footage seems to look way better than what I have shot on a Red One. I know there's not "that much difference" in the quality, so my only thought is because of how small and how much less it ways I am able to focus more on getting a great looking shot.

Anyone else having the same experience?!

I think there are several technical reasons behind this:
Newer sensor yields, Greater bit depth in recording, higher quality calibration and metrics that regulate DSP interpretation of signal. Lots of good stuff. You also have more pixels to start with in any 5K mode, RedColor 2 / Redlogfilm color science for monitoring LUTS. It's a goddamn fine camera.

Great points Dan...I am still unraveling this whole camera and it seems everyday I am floored even more of what it is capable of. HDRx is quickly becoming one of these....

12 bit vs 16 bit? That matters for processing in my workflows. I'm only monitoring in 10 bit at best, and often at 8 bit (help me somebody ... PLEASE!)

What I've noticed about Epic footage is that it has a lot more fine detail in the textures. Even in footage on Vimeo or YouTube there is just a tremendous amount of texture in things.

This is partly resolution, partly improvements in the electronics and processing.

The bottom line, as Dan said so eloquently, "It's a goddamn fine camera"

Resolution, detail, refined processing, color science, and as Greg said some years of experience have led to a more pleasing overall image. The Red One M-X still holds its own though. If you do side by side tests, it's not always night and day but the Epic will win almost every time. But well lit R1 is still pretty amazing. Epic just pushes the envelope further and when you see it lit really well, with great production design and costuming it is remarkable.

Because they are essentially two very different cameras. They may share the same sensor, as in "the same silicone", but that's it.

Image ways, the Epic is obviously so much of a "take two". REDhas listened to their customers and potential customers and fullfilled allmost all our dreams.
Even though there will be a "tattoo" update, I cannot ever really see the Epic being a "bad" choice for any circumstances as it is today.

16 bit and lower compression is all good, but that would just be numbers without an upscaled AD and compression process. And what I feel/sense is a huge processingpower overhead in the AD chain that pumps the most out of the image at "all" exposurelevels. There isn't really a conclusive sweetspot on the Epic, like there is on the "one" cameras.

The image just looks different, but not bad.

Probably us digital guys are finally given the "film treatment" from a digital camera.
And it feels nice.

There is still room for more native dr, but as the effective DR is so huge (not the measureable, but the range that actually looks good) there are very few situations where one can really blame the camera for not getting your image home.

The Epic MX is the first digital camera I think still may be relevant in 5 years time.
It will certainly not be the best of the best. But it might still be considered a useable and relevant image capturing device.

I think it will hold its shelf life longer than 5 years - it is more like buying an Aaton 435 than it is like buying an EX-1.

Is it me or also you feel it , i see a lot of new tones in redcine x from epic pictures, totally different WB algorithm that yield more neutral white balancing , holy good whats this

Every detail matters. While the sensor matters... so does every board. The power supply matters. The internal processing matters. Everything...

The RED ONE MX is great. "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is mostly shot on the RED ONE, as was "The Social Network". But EPIC is better. Every transistor makes a difference. Same sensor but bettor.

Thank you very much for your extreme attention to detail!
