  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DRAGON available soon? ...

So as a Scarlet owner, even though I may have ordered before an Epic owner I have to wait?

Unless I miss my mark, there have been 7 Dragons out to DP's.

I dunno which cam Mark Toia had, but I know I had the one Tom had...
Peter Lyons Collister had Jarreds...

John Marchant of London has the only rentable Dragon I know of.
And for good measures.

RED seems to do a lot of smart things around the Dragon release (not necessarily including lending me the cam, but as to workflows and general "readiness" before a wider release)
I have sorta played with early versions of all RED cams so far, and shooting dragon for a few days straight without a single crash or forced reboot was... unexpected.

Reliable out of the gate, seems to be a goal.
Workflows in place.

Your daily online tools working
Motionmount released (I think Dragon + MM will be a killer combo...)

General fun stuff.

Dragon is gonna be a new page in RED history.

I want that dragon so bad I could cry. Feel like a little kid. :)

To quote one of my favorite internet memes "Shh. No tears. Only dreams now."

In the past few months Dragon has gone from various stages to actual production ready models that are out in the field as we speak shooting on feature films and television productions. There's also a few other ones out there too. So they do exist, however, just at the moment in limited numbers. This will change relatively soon, but there's every reason in the world for Red to get Dragon just right, especially in the face of the technology in front of us.

This particular one was a production ready camera and a bit different compared to the earlier prototypes:

I wanted to know ,if buying a Red Dragon Carbon delivers within October, or you do not know?

According to Jarred:

Carbon Dragons will be available to purchase on a one- by-one, build-to-order basis starting at the end of October for $50k, first come, first serve.

So what I take from that is that you can order one at the end of October and Red will build you one to order (because the Carbon/Magnesium). So maybe 7-10 days after ordering perhaps.

:) thanks Phil

What is certain is that I can not wait beyond October.

Christophe

I believe the only option for any sort of Dragon before the end of October is to buy the CF version. Understand there are likely thousands of Dragon orders before yours, to expect anything this year is totally unrealistic. Especially considering your order only goes back "a few weeks".

EPIC-M cameras are being upgraded now, slowly, and will hopefully ramp up soon. RED is starting with them first and working through the queue based on when your M was shipped. They will start EPIC-X upgrades when ready and I'm presuming that most of the EPIC-M customers will be notified of their upgrade by the time the EPIC-X program starts.

Who has their M being upgraded? Ive not heard of any M owner who've been asked to send it in?

We now know that the Dragon will be a reference.
But for now, nobody in Europe can not get any information on the progress of steps.
Please keep from the few privileged people.
The aim is also trading at the largest scale possible. For a large company like Red, it is quite normal to move up to pre-order.
In fact it is not really "pre-order", but to control, since I spent all my transfer.
While some can afford to wait months without starting to monetize what has already been paid, it is not my case.
For a small company like mine, at least you can "require" a reliable estimate for a delivery period? ... No?
Now I want to change my order ... and then replace my Scarlet by Epic MX + some accessories ... including Motion Mount (is it available? ...).
I do not claim reimbursement.
In 2014 then I'll go to the Dragon. So, I lose, and Red wins ... but despite that I was told that I can not change my order ... so I still have in my possession my Scarlet ...
I do not understand. Here is the message of my contact:

Once you complete your SCARLET TRADE-IN order, your SCARLET will be marked as “EXECUTED” and will remain executed even if you cancel your SCARLET TRADE-IN order. Executed serial numbers cannot be used on any future TRADE-INs or credits.
Basically meaning you cannot change back down to another trade in offer.

As I said earlier, though nothing is set in stone ...
Can anyone give me his version?

Christophe

You could just sell your Scarlet & buy an Epic now. The fact that you have pre ordered dragon will make the buyer of scarlet happy. What's the problem?

Stephen,
Apparently my contact told me it would be too late to change the subject of my order ... and this is where I'm missing something ... or I hurt, "translated" the message ...
Here I want me my resume Red Scarlet to buy a Epic.
So it is cheaper than buying a Dragon ... but I do not want a refund. I want to use the sum ($ 19,000) for the Epic and accessories (including motion mount) ... that's all.
Red comes out winner ... because next year I'll inevitably update to Epic Dragon (if by then it will be possible ...).
There may be a misunderstanding between me and the bomb squad! ... (With my very bad english ...)
Christophe

It took 4 solid months to get my Scarlet when I ordered it on Nov 3rd 2011. I'd expect similar waits for your Dragon. Being patient, accepting, feeling blessed and just trusting the world of RED is a painful game, but that is the only advice you'll get here. Will it all be worth it when you finally get your camera? It sure as hell will. I do understand your frustration though....

You can't change your order, that is clear, however selling your Scarlet & buying Epic X is easy. Your cheapest & quickest way to get a Dragon would be to order a Dragon M.

If you have sent in money for Dragon it can be used for something else, however Red have not asked for any money so don't understand why your being so complicated.

I thought once you'd made your upgrade choice; you could cancel and order again (say going from Epic Dragon to Epic to get it sooner); but you'd be going to the back of the line effectively - I'm sure this was discussed when the upgrade terms were first released and there was minor panic when people had to cancel their orders/wanted to.

Can't remember the link, but I'd try the first upgrade info thread.

I'd double check this with your Bomb Squad Rep

I signed up for the Scarlet Dragon, cancelled the order, and signed up for the Epic trade in. Within a couple weeks for less then 10k I had an Epic with a one year warranty deal. I suggest you do the same.

As for can you later upgrade that Epic to dragon...I am sure you can...Your Scarlet is executed, your Epic however won't be...

So I think your losing something in translation my friend. Since I myself canceled and changed my order and everything worked out fine for me...

I think it is important to understand that the Epic did not just become worse because Dragon is better...

Even though I want a Dragon after using it, the Epic is still an excellent camera and has one feature Dragon does not currently have:
It is available...

I love my Epic, but there is something to be said for having the "latest technology". Especially if your mostly geared towards rentals like I am... I am happy with how often my Epic rents, but I imagine Dragon will rent even more often..

Thank you all for your feedback.
I have great hope for the qualities of the Dragon, which would be the last great generation of a successful Red. So I'll wait.
If someone gets reliable information on the status of the distribution of Dragons cameras, he does not hesitate to let me know.
Also in the hope that European customers are not neglected.

Christophe
