  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Double Dragon....

It would be great to get an update on plans for a new RR card.

Its inevitable... but it's not a priority right now. It wont really be a replacement, The Turbo Rocket is going to be more for the power mongers out there.. insane speeds with some expensive horsepower. Current Rocket will work just fine, and you can double current Rocket up if you want to go even faster.

Interesting. Those who have a Magma thunderbolt enclosure can have more than one RR card in there.

This is mind blowing. Are you guys confident in RED Zooms for use with 6k?

We are testing a bunch of glass right now. The punchline is the industry seems to be going the right way for coverage.

Most of the newest lenses hitting the market have massive image circles that love the Dragon, but even some of the old lenses surprisingly cover 6K.

Of course "coverage" and "resolution/transmission fall off" need to be noted as two different things.

Ah, great to know Jarred! I know quite a few people holding off on RED Rocket purchases thinking a cheaper upgrade is just around the corner. This will make the decision a lot easier.

Great point Jarred. We here at Daufebach Camera plan on testing all of our lenses on the Dragon Sensor as soon as ours come in.

100% certain it will not be cheaper. The next rocket will cost us almost 2x as much to make.

Someone forgot to tell the FPGA community that things are supposed to be getting cheaper :)

My desire is to be able to review footage on a 4K display right from the R3D originals in real time, even if the source footage is 5K or 6K. Would be nice to be able to do that on a single accelerator card rather than needing two. As others have noted, it's also tough to feel good about ROI on a second RR when it's relatively long in the tooth as such things go.

IAC, great to see Dragon alive, looking forward to seeing it breathe fire once things are more optimized.

long in the tooth? wow.

I dont think some people really understand / appreciate just what the Rocket does.. and how much it really should cost..

Hey Jarred, the Dragon looks awesome.
On the Dynamic Range chart I was wondering if Dragon will have better highlight protection and behave more film like in rolling off in the high lights?

We all want the camera to see more in the dark yet we also want it to see through the bright sunlight and all round give us beautiful pictures.
If anyone can deliver this, its got to be Red.

The resolution is nuts... For reference, the dotted line below is a 1920x1080p window.... Dragon = 10x the resolution of 1080p.

Damn. That is an impressive way to put it in perspective!

What is the data rate like @ 6K?

I think Blair may be partly talking about perception. I've heard people say they don't want to pay $4750 for a card that's been out for a few years. To which I would say, it's really one of the only choices to get realtime or better rendering of full quality R3D, even now. Or spend a lot of money on a souped up computer. Either way, it takes money to get the best quality.Time is money. Without Rocket, I wouldn't have the patience for the workflow, especially with a lot of dailies. Now if something better comes along, great. For now, Rocket is still king, at least in my little world.

I have 2 Rockets all have been handled with great care in a clean post-production environment. One is working fine, the other is recognized by the computer sometimes, but won't accelerate playback and gives all kinds of errors when asked to do what it is intended to do. Honestly, its only a year old and is taking a crap on us. There are many other instances of this as well in and around the community which makes people/businesses gun shy on purchasing another card and or having to repair a brand new card which has never been moved nor mistreated in any way. So, they are great at what they do when they work but i think its been proven and fair to say that they are a risky purchase at best. I think there needs to be a better warranty program for these cards (since we are on the subject ie 3 years etc.) Offer me that and i'd consider not only purchasing a few more but getting this busted one repaired. 3K for repair and no long term warranty is a turn off. Just sayin.
Dragon looks great BTW.
