DJI RONIN - independent review and in-depth test

Hi Peter
I've seen that you had to put off your second video for the DJI Ronin test, but are offering to send a private link/password to it? Can I ask you to send this to me? I couldn't send you a PM, got a quota error ;)
Thanks alot for the efforts, really appreciate it!

Cheers
JD

Peter,

What tray, shoulder straps and 7 inch monitor holder which has a Sony FP970 battery at back. Would you recommend to hold the DJI transmitter? For second operator. I was looking at the Secraft tray & straps but they don't seem to do the monitor holder which has a battery at the back and also a paralinx receiver.

thx

Thanks for the link and for making these test videos Peter!

What I wonder: Does a basic Epic/Scarlet kit fit in this case? Looks like they left a empty space on the bottom right :)

That empty space is for wireless HD + monitor. You will need separate case for your camera - it won't fit in there...
It is pre-cut for the DJI Lightbridge + up to 7" monitor, but my Paralinx Tomahawk fits there perfectly as well...

I use Futaba controllers (which is what the DJI uses as well). The best solution for mounting a monitor I have found so far is this...:

It has a balanced offset to clip on your neck strap...

I buy my stuff from HELIPAL, just make sure you get the proper mounting adapter for your Tx (in my case Futaba):

Actual mount (orange or silver): http://www.helipal.com/tarot-fpv-monitor-mount-for-transmitter.html
Futaba adapter: http://www.helipal.com/tarot-neck-strap-adapter-futaba-dji-tx.html
Spektrum / JR: http://www.helipal.com/tarot-neck-strap-adapter-jr-tx.html

The monitor of my choice is the TV Logic VFM-058W (the new version of the best selling 056, now in full 1920x1080 HD resolution)...:

Hi Peter,

"I use Futaba controllers (which is what the DJI uses as well). The best solution for mounting a monitor I have found so far is this...:"

What about the black transmitter / controller that comes with the Ronin? Why aren't you using that? I was going to use the one that came with the Ronin.

"It has a balanced offset to clip on your neck strap...

Can this handle the weight of the monitor + monitor power source (battery) + Paralinx receiver + battery? It wouldn't snap the neck strap hook off the transmitter?

The monitor I'm going to use is this one-

http://www.musthd.com/products/7-in...input-output-focus-assist-false-color-77.html

Will have a Sony F970 battery and Paralinx receiver with a USB power source to power the Paralinx on the back of monitor. The monitor probably isn't as good as the TVLogic. But will do the job.

I'll be using its baby brother on the Ronin-

Alen - yes, you can use the included remote without any issues - it is Futaba after all...
I use the 14SG because I need to control several additional channels for remote applications. I can't go into too many details at the moment...

The Tarot mount will handle all you can throw at it - remember the neck strap will attach directly to it, so the controller's end will only carry the controller itself, which is super lightweight...

I personally don't like having several various batteries to power my gear, so I build custom power solution from a single LiPo or a V-Lock - depending on how much power capacity / draw I need...

I can always get this-

http://www.secraft.net/shop/step1.php?number=1433

To holder the DJI transmitter

Plus these straps might be better, than having it around your neck for a long period. Might give you neck strain.

http://www.secraft.net/shop/step1.php?number=1059

This would work with the above tray.

Together with this to hold the monitor-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Aluminum-Mo..._sbs_ce_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=06R4Z8NRX7WN6RHXC1FA

Then again I can go for the single strap option, I won't have to buy the above tray, just the monitor holder bracket-

Hmmm, all the options...

Peter- please share how you power your Paralinx on your transmitter and receiver side.

I'm new to the world of gimbals. . . can someone kindly correct me if I'm wrong... if you are operating the gimbal with shallow focus you will need 3 operators for complicated tracking and focus shots. 1. the gimbal holder 2. the remote controller and 3. the focus puller. Is it possible for the operator with the remote controller to pull focus as well? If these are stupid q's, or q's answered on other threads I am terribly sorry. Also, as I've just put in an order, are my eyes seeing clearly - dose the package include the controller? The deal just looks too good to be true. I feel like I'm an 8yr old at the christmas tree again.

Yes three operators they will all have a monitor. One on the Ronin, one with the second operator and the third one with the focus puller. Plus another with director.

It will be difficult to pull focus and operate the gimbal at the same time.

Yes the package includes transmitter and lots of other stuff- It's in the other thread the group buy.

@Peter:
Hi,
From your experience, if I want to mount the Red 5" touch monitor on the top bar of the Ronin's handle, which screws should I get to do it and which LCD/EVF cable length is required?
Thanks,

Technically speaking - you can do that all by yourself with the SmoothTrack follow mode and a handle-mounted focus control - and many have been doing just that...

But for proper focus you want a dedicated focus-puller, but you don't need the remote camera operator - you can do it by yourself with the SmoothTrack follow mode. This is equal to using a third person to control the camera - some will prefer 2 member team and some 3 members. Personal preference...

You need the ¼-20 bolt and thin LCD cable around 30" in length (like the 36" Slackline's option)...

Having said that - any physical connection between the handles and the gimbal will affect both the balance (the motors will have to compensate for the constantly changing force as the cable moves during the shot) and the freedom of movement - especially since the Ronin can do both the up-side-down and briefcase modes as well...

So I recommend going wireless - this is my setup as well.
The additional benefit of not having physical connection to the gimbal is that you can just release the QR bracket and mount it on another platform without having to reconfigure anything...

:sifone: Peter

And to top off the cake with a cherry... DJI will still honour the 10% OFF for the original group buy participants. That means that the group buy gets the Ronin at... (wait for it)...

... $ 2.700,- USD ... !!!

Now this is incredible - especially considering the quality and capabilities of this product!

Enjoy! :sifone:

Peter- please share how you power your Paralinx on your transmitter and receiver side.

The current setup I am using and I like the most is as follows:

1. Attached to the RED is the PARALINX ARROW+ transmitter that is powered directly from the Ronin's power-distribuiton box's USB port via a simple USB cable...

2. The ARROW+ then sends wireless signal to two separate receivers...:
A. One ARROW+ receiver mounted on the handle-bar and feeding the TV Logic VFM-058W monitor for the gimbal operator. This is far superior to using thin LCD cables (more about this later). This receiver is powered from a custom LiPo solution via 5V regulator and custom cable...
B. Second ARROW+ receiver feeds another portable TV Logic VFM-058W for "near camera" use by the DP and/or focus-puller. This one is also powered by similar custom LiPo solution that also powers the monitor and can feed the wireless focus controller...

3. The TV Logic on the handlebar then passes the Arrow+ signal to a TOMAHAWK transmitter - also mounted on the handlebar and powered from the same LiPo battery..
The TOMAHAWK transmitter then sends the signal to the video village for monitoring by the director / client on a larger, stationary monitor...
The TOMAHAWK receiver in the video village has three alternate power sources - custom LiPo, standard V-Lock and mains power via the included power supply...

But this is not the final setup I will be using. Stay tuned for more details on this...
