  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI RONIN Group Buy

Thank you Adam!

Thank all looks very doable and the base kit I want. I know that the good folks at DJI HQ are real-time monitoring this thread so please keep posting your thoughts and ideas. Those damn kids over on the Letus thread are out posting us like 2:1 ;-)

Haha Ok one post for you as a gift in this thread then Zeb ;)

I would like those who are SteadiCam style shooters to put together specific features they want. Photos and links work best to make sure your important needs are being heard and met. Again, DJI HQ is monitoring this thread and they are very interested in making this a serious tool for Working Professionals.

Hi Zeb!

Very good. As I have posted many times, the Adapter arm for a stabilizer to attach to the gimbal system, is a near absolute requirement. I put Daryl Goff, of Action Products, who, has the Raptor Pro (I have it as well), in available. The Raptor is particularly suited to this application, IMHO, because of the weight distribution to the pelvic vs. shoulder girdle. Hug differential, favouring, fewer orthopedic surgeon visits, again IMHO, YMMV. The facile removal of footsteps and maintaining of a level horizon are just two additional immense benefits of the combination of pieces. There are a few very important choices to make, for the end user- and the options DJI offers would be well served to include adapter arms, for at least, the Raptor and whatever other rigs end users want. Sure, some may not opt for the combination of pieces, for a variety of reasons, buy the options are ver, very, desirable.

Thank you very much

Had my first test flight with DJI Phantom 2 + the new Zenmuse HD-3D gimbal earlier today. The gimbal's performance blew me away so the Ronin has me very excited indeed. There's a big empty space under my octocopter ready for it, too. I just hope this massive GB pushes the price down as $5K is currently too rich for my blood.

One thing popped to mind when viewing the new-ish demo video on Vimeo: there doesn't seem to be enough room behind the Epic for a battery. How would one power the camera without a side handle with a REDVOLT inside? I don't own a side handle and have zero intention of buying one. Can I mount a V-Mount battery on the Ronin itself perhaps?

There are 99 reasons to own a SideHandle and RED VOLTS are one of them ;-)

I recently purchased the RED Belt Clip with the idea of taking the power weight off the Ronin load and maximizing run time with a RED Bricks. Also am looking to get the Side Winder . . . I mean the Switch Blade since that would also reduce weight and make the load symmetrical to the lens centerline.

BTW: you never posted the magic word "Interested"

My Raptor, for example, allows V mounts on the rig, with handy power outs.

Thank you very much

Never needed either, don't feel like spending money on either just for Ronin.

I'm sure I did. Hang on... .... yeah, post #316.

No worries and just joking about your post #446 ;-)

I own the Gstabi H10 and bring it on set at least a couple of times per week. Seeing what this Ronin can do makes me want to jump ship. Count me in on the group buy. Now, who wants to buy a Gstabi H10? :)

strong, very strong...

Thank you very much

Hmm...what do you see the Ronin doing that the Gstabi can't..?
Gstabi even has a GPS. Ronin does not.

@ Steve, thanks for the question! The Gstabi H10 is a quoted 10lb payload rig. We have run multiple cameras and from what we have seen its preferred weight (on the motors) comes in around 6-7lbs. My bare bones Epic tends to make it 'freak out'. For example if we are shooting a standard talking head walking, and tilt up to reveal the sky, or sometimes even pan left or right she will whip around as if the motor cannot hold the rigs weight, and the shot it completely lost and we have to reset. The lighter 6-7lb cameras do not have this problem.

Just from watching this video and seeing an epic sitting on the gimbal and the way they throw it around make me very excited. We have to baby the H10, we cannot do half of what they are doing with the Ronin (maybe we've got a dud). Also cabling. The H10 has fragile external cables which you have to be very careful with. This has no external cabling which makes it far more robust.

I believe the Ronin is said to have 16lb payload... With what I have experienced, my hope is that in the real world we can get 12lbs on the Ronin - that would be enough for the Epic, glass, wireless follow focus.

The Gstabi guys are building the H14 (14lbs) - which looks great, maybe I'll get my hands on one and be blown away with the progress... But real world in the trenches work is more revealing than a few videos circling on the web.

Hope these random thoughts help. Have you worked with the H10 yet? Maybe our motors are in fact not working up to spec.

Thanks Nahan..think that H10 was just a victim of the early days and insufficient motor power.
Remember when Movi first came out it was only 10 lbs. but by the time of delivery it wound up being 12 lbs.
And now they have update to bring it up to 15 lbs.

Actually heard some of these new motors are capable of going to 20 lbs. but are being conservative
with the ratings cause if they tell people 20 lbs then sometimes they try to push it abit more and then the
whole things falls apart.

All the carbon tube gimbals and exterior wiring of these early gimbals show the do-it-yourself roots
of these gimbals. And in this day and age of Shark Tank alot of people are trying to build
instant mini start-up companies around them. So far Letus and Ronin have a more purpose built
exterior frames and all interior cable design.

Other thing is how easily to balance for use. The one button auto tune for motors is a production must.
Here is Movi for sale for $10,000 because of the time issue. Know of features that have multi-movi's with each balanced
for a different lens to speed up things on set.

I'm selling my brand new (never been used) MOVI gyro stabilized camera platform.

I thought I could use it for the show I'm working on.. "Hawaii Five-o" I set it up using a Canon C-300 camera and a Panavision prime lens, Heden motor with a Preston MDR.
We turned it on and .... It worked... very cool. It's like a hand held Libra Head. But it takes too long for us to balance and shoot. "TV TIME" CRAZY FAST....
So.... I concede...and would like to sell the package.

For guys that are interested in this rig to be used on a Steadicam like me. Are you guys envisioning it like a MK-V rotational system? Or more like how Larry McConkey rigged it up on his rig? ( first 5 mins of this video http://vimeo.com/91559599#at=0)

I for one am having trouble imagining it working like a MK-V system since there will be no way to reorient the monitor on the fly. The only way I can see this working is if we mount the Ronin upside down and clamp a wireless monitor on the gimbal handle of the sled. My question is, are we able to use the Ronin in upside down mode while having the camera cradle right side up and set up initial balance that way?

For those of you who don't know MK-V, this is what they look like and can achieve:

Larry McConkey's rig is more of a tilt forward and back kind of rig which I am still trying to wrap my head around.

Inputs anyone?

Depending on how DJI tackles adapting a Ronin to a multi rotor I think it would be extremely helpful to offer a Ronin with landing legs similar to the Freely Movi MR. With this setup an operator could mount the Ronin to a base that has landing legs that would then interface with a multi rotor. Once done with aerials an operator could release the Ronin from the landing legs and attach the handle bars.
I saw DJI demo a multi-rotor at NAB that had landing gear built into the copter that would retract or deploy as needed by remote control. Seems a better way to go...

That's said, I'm interested...

Thank you,
