Hello Reddies Well I'm wrapping up my visit at NAB and must say that the most impressive new product I saw was the DJI Ronin. I believe this will become the GoPro of gimbals - meaning that it will be easy to use, very rugged and priced competitively. After seeing a couple days of demos from a whole range of Pros to Joe's (without the prototypes breaking) I'm convinced that this product will be ready for the real world when they release it in the next 60 days. This thing is solid, clean and set-up is real simple . . . like me.

I then sought out our RED Octo/Gimbal Expert to discuss getting us an early adopter deal on this bad boy. Patrick Smith over at Aerial Media Pros (you see his banner ads on this site) and his wingman Austin gave me an extended private demo that I recorded on my trusty iPhone and will share with you this weekend after I cut and color the pig.

Patrick and his company were some of the first to heavy lift the Epic in an RC copter and works closely with RED on various cool projects. He is a real passionate guy who takes service very seriously but is also a fun hang. He is one of the (if not the) biggest DJI Dealers in the USA so he will be getting the first batch of Ronin's.

We are still putting the final touches on this deal but it will include a small discount and a first in line position once the first shipment hits the USA. These are going to be on backorder for a year I am sure. Every wedding / event shooter is going to want one so getting priority position is the key in my view. Patrick is also one of the very few RED Camera resellers so he can bundle a new Carbon Dragon into a package deal so you can skip two lines and be like all like Vegas VIP Whale 'n stuff.

"Price will be less than $5K" I was told by the VP at DJI. I also grilled him on weather proofing the thingy and he said "we are working on that". He also mentioned that the production model will have even stronger motors than the prototype putting this well within the working weight envelope of a Dragon with full gizmo armor.

Post "Interested" if you are. I will edit this post with details, updates and the video as they become available.

Interested. Met with a few regular Redusers the morning before NAB and it was clear that they were both knowledgeable of the competing rigs and the price/feature of the DJI piece.

Very interested! Please count me in! I am an owner of a few DJI products including a few Dji zenmuse gimbals ( made for flying with a blackmagic pocket, sony nex-7). Last year I had my drone crashing from 90 feet high into a concrete floor and for my surprise the gimbal was in one piece and not damaged at all. Top quality there, believe me!! Made for real world usage....plus Ronin will have a quick release system that will enable you to change from flying to handheld in seconds....imagine the shooting possibilities on this ( ex. approach o building from the sky and get handheld inside without stopping the cam!! .. Endless possibilities! ). Ohhhh....and the auto tuner/ balance over iPhone and no screws....that's a game changer!!

I'm not only INTERESTED - I'm all in on this rig. I've worked with MOVI on several jobs and I know the advantages and disadvantages of that rig. And MOVI did a lot of stuff right - but it's far from a perfect solution. It drove me to hire someone to build a custom rig for OFFHOLLYWOOD - and then hire another guy to improve that custom rig and make it actually perform - which I'm still improving. I now know more than I ever wanted to know about gimbals.

I spent a lot of time at DJI - and I will just say this now - all hype and marketing aside - THIS is the rig you want.

If I don't get one of the very first of these shipped - I will be pissed. So ... Zeb ... you better deliver :)

I don't like to run GB's that are not for the entire RED family so no . . . unless DJI makes some dealer turf stink about it. I'll double check with the boyz on this manana. In the meantime . . . it's our little Vegas secret
 
Certainly interested. Is there a spec sheet available for carrying capacity? Any way to mount it to a steadicam arm in order to lighten the load?
