I will be the first to say that DJI has left me pretty disappointed as of late. The X5 was a pretty crappy camera and when you consider the price, it was a botch job by DJI.

Just received the X5R/RAW today and wow...it washes the bad taste away. Amazing image quality for the camera the size of an apple. It's truly amazing.

Here is a still pulled from the first shot with the camera. 4096x2160 @24fps. Shutter 1/50th, f 2.2 on the 12mm Olympus. ISO at 200.

As my Inspire RAW arrives Thurs, this post makes warm all over. I can't wait to see what it can do.

If you have been toiling with the X5, prepare for your expectations to be met (assuming you don't get a faulty unit...lol, head a few stories). The image quality is really above what I was expecting.

Luke, that looks great. A huge step up from the previous camera. I'm wondering about post processing and general playback. I've found that editing systems and quicktime for playback really struggle with the codec. I'd be interested is hearing about your experience with raw.

Also I didn't know the media was shipping yet, I assume this is raw, am I wrong about that?

Thanks, I'm trying to decide on purchasing.

Great to hear. Possibly going to pull the trigger on one next week during NAB.

The real question is,were you hand holding the drone? Ha.

Looking forward to hearing your impressions from aerial.

Ha, yeah holding the drone up or setting it down nearby. Once it's set up on the Osmo it will be a lot easier just to frame like a normal camera. We are developing a lightweight CF job that will be pretty affordable and is meant to work with the Osmo/X5R setup. Pretty stoked for that too.

The little hand held gumbal with this same Raw & lens combo is pretty impressive as well.
Might just buy one for fun. It could come in handy !

Oh yeah man! Beautiful crash cam. Personally I think this finally starts an argument for full size aerials vs. Drone. Obviously two different tools and shot types but...you can use a 90mm lens on this thing!

Hi Luke

What was so bad about the X5? What were the issues?

60Mbps for 4K high detail aerials falls apart very quickly. Their "Log" profile left a lot to be desired. White balance issues, constant firmware updates trying to fix stuff but only making it worse...it was kind of a headache.

Janne, a fellow reducer has been flying big drones for several years now on a daily basis. He got got one of these little raw cameras and then asked me if I wanted to buy his dragon... As I understand you can not really compete with the inspire and this setup with a big gimbal. It simply holds position better as its smaller and lighter and has less inertia and also better lock on ground features and so on. So it flies faster, better acceleration and de acceleration and these little gimbals are perfectly in balance. And a small high-resolution sensor makes sense as you can have greater in focus range and makes things easer... then ofcourse the crash costs are very different.

I think I will buy one to put on my helmet cam to run with smooth motion, and fixed horizon, think that will be a really cool POV setup.

Then It also work with the DJI focus without motors. To me that makes DJI focus one of the top FFs. Got it a few days ago and love it.

Are you shooting SSD for raw recording? Adds $1,500 to price but what does it do to size? Does it slip into camera, or does it have to be mounted somehow? Intriguing camera for sure, would love to get one of these and shoot a ton of b-roll with it. DJI is coming out with some great technology, hope they get their technical support straightened out, I have heard horror stories about them. Thanks for keeping us informed and look forward to learning more about this remarkable camera. To easily move just about anywhere quickly and easily with cinematic results is a dream come true. My bulging disk in my lower back has a big silly smile just thinking about the break it would be getting.

LOL, yeah. I have a bad disk as well, probably why I'm so excited about this little cam.

The Inspire 1 RAW packages comes with a 512GB SSD and it's mounted, well, on the camera/gimbal. It's all kind of one piece. Their customer service is actually a lot better now. I highly recommend this set up. Flying these drones is so easy now...they basically fly themselves.
