Delays and Frustration...

JIM,

as we share the same birthday day ( don't know the year) I do fill we are alike in some ways were we take the most impossible missions and hardest tasks to accomplish, we fallow our dream with unconditional passion, Perseverance is our daily breakfast and no matter what we continue forward in our goals.

I have being behind REd for about two years now and I'm for sure not giving up now, you can count on my support as well, Big things lay ahed for me and RED and viceversa, looking forward for my RED/DAY more then anything esle.

You have done great at OAKLY, you will do FANTASTIC at RED!

Ciao,

KETCH ROSSI

Can't help but wonder what financial cost this has been to Jim...to coin a phrase from Lexus -The Pursuit of Perfection. Certainly admirable as far as commitment and dedication. Given all the mods and improvements to make this a true alternative to shooting on film I would say this project is a labor of love. Perhaps at some point it will be profitable. But somehow I get the impression it is not the driving force here.

If you go back and search my posts, I have been saying since the beginning that this will probably take until this spring or summer to really be sorted out and fully up and running. Jim, you are leapfrogging a couple generations of technology, so this is 100% to be expected, in my opinion.

Just keep rocking on, man! Don't get discouraged!

I sit here watching the value of my "old" gear (that I've owned for a year!!....) trickling down the drain. Though they have more than paid for themselves, they have still lost almost 1/3 of their street value in that one year. In the old days, it would be time for an upgrade and a bunch of reading and research on what itty bitty trickleware are they adding to this year's models.

Instead, I'm just a month or two away from receiving a pair of REDs. 2008 will be the year that I stop paying attention to what Sony, Panasonic, JVC, and Canon are doing....

You are re-making not only a camera but an entirely new business and production model for this industry. There is nothing to be disappointed about!

The wait is a challenge...your understanding is very appreciated. Rock on.
Show 'em watcha got...

Red has already changed my life in extremely positive ways. Unfortunately, when it comes to karma I think I least deserve it. If I could go back in time, I would have tempered my skepticism and delayed my judgements. I apologize.

So let me just say this: If this was only about a technology then we could stop right there, because this camera is really awesome and booting it up for the first time was magical. I felt inspired to do art... by an electronic machine.

But that's not enough, because the machine, is really a ticket, it allows filmmakers to overcome one of the great barriers to expressing themselves... the film. Format is now a level playing field for independent films, people shooting film simply don't have an economic advantage. Red is cutting literal thousands from their budgets. It's enabling people who couldn't before to get into the game without compromising. You are helping the young, the daring and the different (and let's face it "the crazy") much more than you know.

But that's not enough because you've also started this community. Which has been for me an education. It has created many new and great friendships. It may in fact be more valuable than the camera.

At this moment, I'm waiting for a truck to pick me up and take me to a check out for one of the largest grip and electric packages I've ever ordered. I just got a funny text message from Vladimir Eugene, he's at the airport, waiting to be picked up and taken to a camera checkout with Red #87. There are a lot of good things and good people in my life this morning and I have you guys to thank for it.

Ian Bloom

Dammit, Ian! You need to get your karma balance worked out so we can all get our Reds. I've been doing every good deed possible to help speed the process. I've even reduced yelling at the idiot drivers I share the road with! Sure, they shouldn't be allowed to drive, unlike ME, but maybe I can yell less.

Just kidding about the yelling part. Seriously, let's get keep sending out those positive waves! It's all we can do for now, but what the hell . . . .

...We did post a schedule, tentative or not. We all made plans based on this hopeful schedule. I am frustrated. I am embarrassed and I am irritated that it has taken us so long to get the job done. I should have known better...

Optimism is one of the characteristics that are at the very foundation of nearly every endeavor that requires a massive and sustained effort. If it were not for the optimism, this type of project might never be undertaken. Deep down, we may have our doubts, but in order to get up every day (and stay up late every night) toiling away at a monumental task requires motivation and drive. "...should have known better..."? Maybe, but I really doubt anyone really cares. No one can "know" the duration of a task that has never been achieved before. At best, its an estimate and that too is tempered by the optimism of the goal.

In the end, what matters is the finished product and here everyone involved in the development of this camera system can be very proud of what has been accomplished, on schedule or not.

You all have the absolute right to be sad and frustrated over the delays. It really doesn't matter that I posted "Everything in life changes... including our camera specs and delivery dates..." at the bottom of every post. We did post a schedule, tentative or not. We all made plans based on this hopeful schedule. I am frustrated. I am embarrassed and I am irritated that it has taken us so long to get the job done. I should have known better. This is a helluva challenge that we started from ground zero. I was nuts to think we could do it properly in this amount of time, let alone several months less.

I can only hope that all the waiting will be forgotten after all our customers get their cameras. Please take solace (I do) in the fact that the camera does things no other camera can do. It is priced to get in the hands of many. We are listening and have changed our program many times based on feedback. We are replacing cameras with better ones at no charge. We have including a free professional app at no charge. We have full Apple support. And we have real intent to deliver more than we promised when you placed your reservation. We will do our best to treat our customers as they deserve. No one is just a (serial) number at RED. Ask 1-100.

I encourage any who are frustrated to set aside one full minute to swear at us, kick the table, or whatever else you need to do to vent. Then come back and join the RED club with a clear and positive purpose. Life is a long road.

Jim

Jim, you've truly made me into a believer. The passion and zeal you have for life and making things "right," is unheralded and reminds me of how I like to think I see the world...at times. It's just hard when you're struggling with your last dime all the friggin' time. So please forgive my uncertain attitude about the direction you might take the camera. I know I've written some missives that have suggested a very skeptical eye toward RED, but I have repeatedly been blown away by the way you've handled the company.

In short, don't let anyone get you down with gripes. And this too shall pass. Like you mention, once people have their cameras, everything will be right. We all know, in a lot of ways, your contributions are going to turn filmmaking on its ear (indie or otherwise). I'm just lucky I have the opportunity to sit at the crest of the wave.

Congratulations man. Be easy. It's normal for overachievers to overestimate themselves at times. Although, you may be guilty of that, you also kept everyone as updated as you could, communicating directly with your customers. That's all ANYONE could ask. You've done a great job.

I can only tell you what my experience is. I have the new mount, old IR/LP filter and old DSP but new firmware (Build 11). I could live with this camera forever without one more change. But I will get the conversions done this coming week because I know how much better the image is. I've seen it.

We are almost there. I know that for sure because Sony is back at it trying to block RED from being used on Sony Pictures movies. It really is quite flattering. The DPs are getting quite a kick out of it. We have to thank Sony for helping us market our program... I guess that is another story for another day.

Jim

Man, FUCK Sony. Yeah, I said it.

Meh. Spiderman 3 sucked anyways. They don't deserve RED for the 4th one.

I dont think so, disappointed yes

Sounds like scared to me. Whenever you have a conglomerate trying to put the kibosh on a small, nascent business, you have to wonder what purpose does that serve? If anything, Sony should be supporting Jim's efforts. But they're not because they realize they're losing a bit of control. And maybe it's only a marginal bit for the moment, but it doesn't take a genius to see where this could all head.

There are A LOT of talented filmmakers out in the world...there are A LOT of talented filmmakers working within the studios...don't want them getting big ideas about taking actions into their own hands.

Mr. Ian Bloom, I have steadily become a fan of your eloquence. And yes Mr. Eugene sounds like one hell of a person too. I had the pleasure of speaking with him after a very generous offer he posited. It's the people that ultimately keep me coming back to this community; it's funny how you can become familiar with someone by looking at an avatar and their name alone.

Good News

Good News

This means a more solid camera. A better camera. And less future recalls and bugs. Good news all around. And well worth the wait. Thanks for the update.

The canadian dollar rose almost .20$ against the US in the last 6 months.
Take all the time you want. Call it the war on terror discount!

I've shot with RED in October, so while I know it's not vaporware, I am still anxious to get my very own. I'm more than happy to wait while it gets better though. And did not schedule RED shoots for that very reason.

That said, none of this would have been possible without Sony and other manufacturers motivating Jim to make his own camera that does what we all REALLY want. It's just wrong to shelve technology in the name of profits.

Jim and his team are to be commended in this revolution for the people, by the people. And thanks to Sony for making it that much sweeter. They're getting sued BTW along with Maxell and Fuji for fixing prices on pro tape from '99-'02. $110M by the EU. Sony was fined even more for trying to block the investigation while the others cooperated. They wouldn't answer questions and shredded documents. Like no other once again...
