  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

December Dragon Update

Jarred, do you have any kind of estimate time vice when / if old rockets can process dragon footage. As we work we do not really need realtime we only use the rockets for proxy renders that we do at low debarring. Then the final renders we do in flame where the rockets are not in use. So basically anything that does turn 6k 3rd's to proxy files would do. Does not need to be at any fancy quality or such.

We probably will buy a rocket X any way but it would be nice to still be able use the old rockets for transcoding.

No time frame.. R1 to process 5K and lower dragon footage is on the list but GPU processing has taken priority as another generation or two GPU will be able to beat the original Rocket.

Will the RRX accelerate rendering output out of Adobe premiere CC/After effect cc or Speegrade CC? (not talking about playback talking about final rendering output speed out of any of those programs)

Yup, Premiere utilizes the Rocket and Rocket-X when exporting. Makes a huge difference.

The question more is what do you need... and only you can answer that. It's a hard decision. People have been waiting for a new mac pro for so long now that it is the obvious choice.. as long as you spend enough money in upgrades so that it is noticeably faster than an Imac. If you only edit R3D's a day or two a month.. then the Mac Pro is probably a better way to go.

On the other hand, Rocket-X is going to be faster than even a PC with dual 12 core CPU's and dual Gpus... it's just really ,really fast because all it does is one thing and that one this is to crush R3Ds. It beats every single or dual processor mac or PC out there right now, and it is only running at 30% speed. Rocket-X with a TB2 enclosure you can use with your laptop, trashcan mac pro or tower mac pro, a mac mini and it probably will last a long time and you can rent it to people. Another good thing about the Rocket is that it has a pretty long lifespan. the Rocket 1 is 6 years old now... and still can compete neck and neck with the fastest machines out there.
I want to be able to scrub through 5k and soon 6k raw footage to pull stills....full resolution makes choosing a LOT easier...I can edit at 1/4 perfectly fine on my iMac and retina....so if the rocketx can give me full playback over TB1 or at least TB2 it is definitely worth the price to me....

My thoughts completely...

Only thing I want to know is.... whats the best recommended TB enclosure for the ROCKET X. Because I need a seriously fast mobile solution.

Unfortunately it's not an answer many of you want to hear, but the best way to use a Rocket-X, by far, is inside a PC ( or an old mac tower ). There is no question about it. Thunderbolt 2 will help out alot.... TB2 and Rocket-X is going to be a great combination, but TB2 its nowhere near fast enough to harness the FULL power of the Rocket-X card. And I say that with love typing on a Mac.

Don't get me wrong... the "trashcan" mac pro is a feat of engineering... and I am glad Apple mixed things up a bit with a device that will probably be just fine for most. If you are a Final Cut guy ( the latest version is pretty great ) then you pretty much have no choice. I am confident the new Mac Pro is going to be incredibly successful.

Apple by far has a superior operating system. I don't think anyone could ever argue that that has spent alot of time on both. But you currently can build or buy a dual CPU 24 core PC with 7 slots of full PCI-E slot goodness that will blow the lid off of any Apple.

From a raw power perspective.. the PC is going to win every time if configured upwards. Twice as many CPUs, Twice as many possible video cards, 4X as much maximum ( and faster ) memory , all of that and a more frequent and easier path for upgrades.

The new mac pro is of course more portable than almost any workstation PC.. Guys that spend alot of time on set I can see the trashcan being incredibly attractive. Those big old Mac Pros seem to get heavier and heaver every year that goes by, so one could build a pretty killer cart with the new mac pro, an external thunderbolt housing, external storage etc and be much more portable.

I have a feeling someone will come along with a case that houses the trashcan and a bunch of space for drives and extra PCI-E slots cabled through thunderbolt internally.. kinda like Sonnet Tech did with the bad ass 1U rack expander for the Mac Mini. That would be pretty cool...

Personally.. I have gone from Mac to PC to Mac to PC to Mac and back again over the last year or so... and landed on a great ( for me ) hybrid approach.

When I need to do heavy lifting.. actual work... I use a PC. It is just so, so much faster and I really love it. When I do everything else, I use a mac laptop... and I love that.

I use Adobe programs for pretty much everything and switching between the mac and pc versions is pretty much transparent. The pain in the ass for some Adobe Creative Cloud is actually incredibly great for this. It allows you to sync fonts (soon)and settings across mac and pc painlessly. And Resolve is pretty much the same as well, although running Linux on a PC probably takes the win if Resolve is where you spend your life.

For the PC users, things will really be great next month when Intel announces the new E7 Xeons... 15 cores each processor with new motherboards that can take up to 8 of those CPUs on and real USB 3.0 and yes, even thunderbolt 2.

At the end of the day... data is getting bigger and bigger.. there are going to be more and more pixels with more and more processing. We still need " trucks " to do the heavy lifting. RED doesn't plan on slowing down anytime soon. And it's just not us.. almost every other camera company has quadrupled their pixels over the last year or so... and its just going to continue.

mmm....

Every PC I have ever had has given me hell over time... The operating system is probably what I hate most about PC and the non portable nature of towers is what stops me dead.

I hear you Jarred regarding the PCI-E slots on the PC's , The only reason I still have 12 core mac towers in my office is for those PCI-E slots for transcoding. Other than that I never turn them on, my laptop performance is better in so many ways to those old towers.
Its such a pity we are all cornered by those slots and now bottled necked by TB2.

So the simple facts are... if you want to stay MAC... a 12 core Mac PRO Can with ROCKET X via thunderbolt 2 external enclosure just to get some basic form of real time play back going. But know way near as much as what you'll get from a hooned up PC. BUMMER !

Its like catch 22 every way you look at this. I personally cannot see light at the end of the tunnel. it's like we are still 2 or 3 generations of computers away from full res real time RAW heaven.

Your 6k cameras are pumping huge amounts of RAW information that your constantly 3 steps ahead of computer manufactures. Thats the big problem here.

Well... I can say is.
When I finally get my maxed out MAC PRO "CAN" delivered and someone out there can finally tell me who makes the best TB2 enclosure for a ROCKET X. Ill give that a go for a while and see how it works for my "hotel room" work flows.

Ive gone full FCPX now, Ive decided to drop Adobe Premier only because FCPX is way way faster and easier to edit in (once I finally got my head around it).

I'll pay almost anything for speed... If someone can save me 5 minutes per day, I pay them thousands !!!! I'm just hoping and praying this ROCKET X TB2 MAC PRO is enough...
If it can give me real time 6k full res smooth playback, then I'll be a happy boy. if not... then I'll be pissed.

I'm thinking as a fall back.... that 4k REDLOGFILM PRORES will end up being my workflow for a little while longer. Only until the day when 6k RAW R3D's can be edited smoothly and silky.

One thing I cannot winge about is the DRAGON camera itself. Still blows me away how smooth and real life the pictures are.

Im rambling...

Happy new year everyone. :)

Paul, are you referring to 2 R1 Rockets in a Mac Pro Tower (non-trashcan)? If so, that info has been around for quite some time. Google Michael Cioni's posts regarding multiple rockets. I see up to 70FPS and more depending on the resolution and 40-50FPS on a MBP with dual Rockets.

I think if Rocket-X is currently running at 30% and still crunching Full Res 6X then we won't need to have an open dialogue (yet) regarding dual Rocket-X's. Unless 3D 48FPS is needed and the Rocket-X at full speed isn't conducive enough.

What kind of performance should one expect from the RRX on an old 12 core Mac Pro with 5k/6k footage?

I share your thoughts. Catch 22 is the right expression... Go for power and speed and get stuck with Windows OS. Go Mac and your efficiency through the OS, PRORES, and pretty much everything else increases.

I really hope someone can figure out how to shotgun two TB2 ports together into one pipe in an enclosure... I think that would be monumental and would solve all my problems.

This year, 2014, we must push Apple to "officially" support ProRes encoding. This technicolor hula hoop we must jump through to create ProRes on Windows is just silly pants. It's become a standard delivery codec in the industry. They know the PC folks have ways to encode, I just don't get why they don't acknowledge the demand and provide a solution.

Perhaps Apple you should include the support with the Quicktime Pro license. That would almost make perfect sense in reality.

That would be great, but it looks like Apple has started giving away their software for free in exchange for hardware sales so making people's life easier on PC's might not fit that business model.

Speaking of which.. for the life of me I can't understand why AVID hasn't released a 4K capable DNXhd codec yet. It's the only real chance of shaking the ProRes dominance.

So freaking true. I wonder if Avid knows about 4K :)

We've been waiting for a long time and still nothing.

FCPX might have to replace our long time Avid suite soon.

Im done with AMA and lugging around that workflow :P

The newest to be released version of Scratch 8, (its in beta now, maybe feb) can make Pro Res on a Windows box along with a lot of great other new features.
