  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It doesn't need to. If you are set on Mac.. then stick with it. Get a TB2 enclosure and by happy with it. The question was just the absolute fastest way to use the Rocket-X card and there is only one answer. For simple editing.. the Mac Pro trashcan ( the 12 core one ) and TB2 Enclosure with a Rocket-X card should still be able to at least get you to realtime playback for 5K R3Ds.

And Final Cut has a great feature to let you invisibly render in the background if you have the time for 6K footage. Final Cut has been tweaked to really take advantage of the dual GPU's and from my short time playing with it is pretty impressive.

Just do yourself a favor and skip the 4 core version and go straight to the 8 core or 12 core with as much memory as you can afford.

any idea on the performance you would get with just the Mac Pro (no Red rocket) on RCX ? How well will the D700 help in decoding R3D footage ?
 
Thanks for the reply jarred.....PC or hackintosh won't happen for me right now....don't have the time and I do all my work in fcpx and davinci....
so I am assuming that TB1 (which is what we are stuck with on the latest iMac) is more or less pointless?
i am not concerned about render times but would like to be able to work with 6k files....and that at highest quality possible with as little lag as possible....with the first benchmarks coming in, I am not so sure the new macpro will really help with that....the rocketX might be the only option....so I guess the question is how many frames at 6k does it buy over TB1? Over TB2 if I get 2fps on my iMac without rocketX (just throwing that out)....am I looking at 10? 15? Over TB1? 20? 30? TB2?
realistically I can work beautifully with 5 and 6k files (at 1/4) on my iMac in fcpx or davinci right now...if the rocketX pushes that up to 1/2 or full, i would get it in a heartbeat....even if I have to wait for the next iMac upgrade (with TB2) to get full.....
i believe the sonnet box is TB1 right now anyway....to be traded in for TB2 when it comes out....
would love to get some real world numbers......

Realtime playback with 4k R3D's in Final Cut.. i have seen it happen. Final Cut has been optimized for the D700, and I hear Adobe is working on optimizing as well.
 
Jarred are you guys going to make a RocketX that fits into one of the video ports of Garbage Can Mac? That sounds like it would give the best of all. 1 D700 and one RocketX.

If you are using final cut pro and the new mac pro and are only editing 4K footage you are in pretty good shape. Apple made a great push to make sure that Final Cut on the new can rips through 4K very fast in the timeline. Its impressive to watch. Final Renders are not going to be the fastest right now, but Remember we are also working with Apple and actively optimizing GPU so it will only get better. Thunderbolt 2 is also not running at the spec speed yet... Last I read it was running around 75% of its full potential so everything is going to get better with just software updates.

That said.. if you are editing 5k Epic or 6k Dragon footage outside of Final Cut , a Rocket-X is going to make your life alot easier and should bring you back up to realtime.
 
I still have my fingers crossed that someone will come out with Thunderbolt 2 solution that will allow us to merge 2-4 thunderbolt lanes together to a PCI enclosure for our red rocket-x card. Is that even a reality technically?

This has been discussed, at length, in other threads. There are a few folks that have been claiming that it's a done deal. I still have my doubts but I'll be happy to see it if it shows.

I guess you guys at Red will keep optimizing RCX for GPU decode on the D700 too, so we could hope to land not too far away from realtime exports on RCX too, right ?

I still hope you'll support Dragon on the "old" Red rocket, even if it's slower at 6K, it's still very useful, especially when you're on a laptop.

The question is about cooling. Does the CF have a disadvantage in this area and will tend to run hotter?

I think mentioned elsewhere, but, yes, a lot of internal mechanicals, mounting points, and configurations had to be altered between aluminum and carbon fiber to account for heat dissipation. Hence, cannot just slap carbon fiber panels on the chassis for aluminum : )
 
I have asked a similar question before and asked my BS rep to have the tech dept do a simple test. I was inquiring at the time regarding the effect of the Mg++ vs. non SSD module. Now we can have a forum member likely do some camera testing. At ambient room temp at least, turn fans off both cameras and moitor and record operating temps. Same with retaining one or two old fans. Now the DCF is different as what I describe above more pertains to choice of upgrade vs new dragon and the choice of fans. As regards DCF, I was told tech sAid no heat issue as configured for sale. Still, if one chooses to for whatever reason go with older fan or bottom fan only the longevity of electronics might be at issue. All the more reason to go with the engineering recommendations and maybe buy new with redarmour. The real test is high ambient temp and fans engaged...adaptive mode and not. At least most have posted takes have not been nixed by fan noise for the most part.

CUDA is a priority right now on the GPU side.. Nvidia has been great providing a ton of manpower to make the CUDA+R3D optimization the best path. OpenCL is a more open standard so that gets pushed forward by the community. Its a great combo. You have Open CL that is getting some legs and the dominance from the new mac pro will likely push that forward even faster, and you have Nvidia, who really cares about this market investing in time and resource to make anyone using their products very happy.

They are designed to be about the same. The far majority of heat is dissipated through the fans and heatsinks in the ducts and out the chimney which is the same on both cameras.

For the radiant heat, The CF has some extra heatsink/cooling placement on some parts like the mini-mag carbon side ssd to bridge the small gap that Aluminum has over Magnesium. That gap is really small though... Normally aluminum is better than Magnesium or Carbon Fiber at dissipating heat, but that is a comparison between raw materials.. Most of the parts of the camera are coated with powdercoat paint or anodized so the spread between materials is smaller than one would assume.

So to get the best raw play performance the rocketX will still be the best solution, even over TB2....To me the question is to spend 8k on a macpro or 6k on rocketX and sonnet box....

The question more is what do you need... and only you can answer that. It's a hard decision. People have been waiting for a new mac pro for so long now that it is the obvious choice.. as long as you spend enough money in upgrades so that it is noticeably faster than an Imac. If you only edit R3D's a day or two a month.. then the Mac Pro is probably a better way to go.

On the other hand, Rocket-X is going to be faster than even a PC with dual 12 core CPU's and dual Gpus... it's just really ,really fast because all it does is one thing and that one this is to crush R3Ds. It beats every single or dual processor mac or PC out there right now, and it is only running at 30% speed. Rocket-X with a TB2 enclosure you can use with your laptop, trashcan mac pro or tower mac pro, a mac mini and it probably will last a long time and you can rent it to people. Another good thing about the Rocket is that it has a pretty long lifespan. the Rocket 1 is 6 years old now... and still can compete neck and neck with the fastest machines out there.
