December Dragon Update

Enough of the Apple "greed/no pro market/PC vs this or that". Every thread I read has 2 to 5 pages of just banter between PC guys or nMP haters that want their voices heard for no constructive reason. Take your discussions elsewhere besides a Dragon Update thread. Please.

As for the Sonnet III Chassis, yes it will support RR-X. It is still TB1 and performance is TBD on the RR-X in a TB2 chassis. As a TB1 (soon to be TB2) chassis, it is excellent with a Mac Pro, iMac, or rMBP for housing a RR and some drives for smaller commercial work. Larger shows I'm sure will want a 4,1 / 5,1 Tower until Resolve and others can hone in on the DXXX GPU cards in the new Pro.

As a stock owner in Apple I am glad they are greedy. if instead they just tried to help out indy filmmakers then I would have grounds to sue management for breach of shareholder contract. Most open platform stuff makes $0 for the creators, or near $0.

As an Apple stock holder there's a difference between mismanaging and a scorched earth policy that ultimately hurts yourself. You don't think Pixar open sourced OpenSubDiv out of the kindness of their hearts do you? They realized that screwing everyone else over was costing them tons of money.

because this is the last dragon update thread not a pc vs mac thread, sorry..

Joke . . . all OP's start out as fact finding or updates . . . then devolve into bitching about Apple or workflow discussions.

Yeah if this update business takes much longer I'm jumping ship. Been shooting a lot of Alexa and Sony F55 / F5 lately and the Epic is starting to feel a little long in the tooth :-)

I feel you Adam. Just lost two jobs to Alexa due to waiting in the Dragon line. ;(

have any of you guys tried to order stuff or get it fixed from Arri? It takes just as long if not longer. I've been hearing these complains since Red1 Mysterium to Red1 MX upgrade. As a red owner you should expect to loose out to other packages while your camera is being serviced; comes with the territory. Best way to avoid this issue is own two cameras that way you always have something to shoot on and not left in the dark. If you wanna shoot on something else go for it, down the line you'll realize how much you miss your red.

Ill rent you my brand new Arri Alexa XT 4:3 Plus champ! And yes we ordered our dragons at the same time and i paid for mine in full a year ago with the rocket X. Im wondering is it worth still having the rocket X.

Am I the only one missing an update on Scarlet Dragon?
Epic Dragon at 5K equals Scarlet Dragon, aside fps capability, or there will be the same different read-reset sensor time as seen on MXs?
News on fps at HD and WS aspect ratio, as well as eventual latest words (denial?) about non future upgradability after Dragon, would help budgeting

In practice there were also noise differences….

Hi Jarred,

It's been two months since your last detailed update. Could you please shed some light on the progress with the new OLPF and upgrade time frame for the existing owners with orders in the system.
1. Early Adopters(Epic M & X owners)
2. Epic M owners
3. Epic X owners

Thank you,
Sulekh

Ok.. time for an update.

DRAGON

Dragons as you probably have noticed are shipping out at a much higher rate in the last couple weeks. Sensor Yield as of Friday are back up to our normal Epic rates, which is a huge achievement by our engineers since the visible range on the Dragon is so deep , and so many more critters are now exposed that normally would just be hidden by noise in the lows and clipping in the highs with previous sensors. Software calibration on the Firmware side has also gotten alot better as many will attest to, and keeps getting better by the week.

Unfortunately, It is very difficult to give timeframes for upgrades as the process is dependent on so many factors. Not only do we have our own logistics to handle, but also as we notify customers to send their cameras in for upgrade, some drive them over in 12 minutes, and some that are in the middle of productions can take 12 days. We do our best to account for that and plan accordingly but its a moving target. There are now thousands and thousands of upgrades to be done... so realistically whatever the case may be it is going to take us months, not weeks to get through everyone.

The new Dragons camera we can give you a timeline.. This only applies to the Carbon Dragons as the other new Dragons are locked behind their respective upgrades. Right now the bulk of Paid Carbon Dragons will be shipped before Christmas and a few days after. The holiday kinda screws with the program but we still are going to have our production floor open through the holidays to assemble, test and ship Carbon Dragons and Upgrades in process as they come out of the oven. If you place a new Carbon Dragon order today, It will ship in the first weeks or two of January.

ROCKET-X

Rocket-X cards are actually already shipping on demand to Dragon customers as they take delivery their order. So if you have been notified to send your camera in for upgrade or are taking delivery of a New Carbon Dragon your rep should remind you if you have a card on order and ask if you want it. Dragon Footage currently needs the Rocket-X to decode footage hence their given priority. If you are doing post for someone else's Dragon and are in dire need to take delivery of your Rocket-X.. Just email Brent or Myself and we will get you sorted.

These are production cards with beta firmware builds. These cards have 3 "banks" of processing and we develop to each bank. Right now only 1/3 the card is turned on, hence users should expect full quality 6K is running at realtime ( 24-30fps) . We just finished the firmware update that has turned on the second third and it's running at 65fps in the labs. Current owners should see that build become public beta around January 8th.

Side SSD Mini Mag Module / Mini Mags.

If you need to do some planning to figure out what path you are going take and to figure out what to spend where, you have lots of time. They are not even officially released yet remember, so you have another 24-25 hours till you can start ordering them, and another 26-27 hours before they start shipping. ;)

REDVOLT XL Module + Charger

Tomorrow afternoon.....

Sure... I will try and post an update later on tonight. Way overdue.

i paid for mine in full a year ago with the rocket X..

Nobody is charged for anything, not even deposits, until the product is ready to ship... so your statement isn't accurate. Some people put money in their accounts on their own accord in anticipation or for their own tax reasons , but we do not pre-charge for product that is not ready to go out the door.

Sorry it is taking a long time.... thats our bad , but it's not fair to imply that we are taking people's money and not delivering.
