  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

December 23rd Holiday Update. Upgrades , New orders, EVFs , Etc.

Element Technica working on a version with the battery?

Speculation, of course, but I was under the impression that the Element Technica version was the "Red version." Regardless, if there is more than one version, and there's a chance this aspect of DSMC² development will be open to 3rd party companies (a la OMOD), then that's yet another exciting aspect of this next Red camera design and philosophy.

Thank you for all the heads up, Jarred. Lots of great news all around. May you and your team enjoy a well-deserved holiday break.

Element Technica is very much their own company with their own building and their own army that build whatever they want. One of my new years resolutions is to encourage them to be even more independent without needing to worry about the time-consuming adult supervision "business" stuff that can slow everything down.

Back to DSMC2... The modular system is great, but rather useless if there is no options. Having 3rd parties step in and augment what we do is what really is going to make this system unbeatable.

I really gotta thank Dino for introducing me to Foolcat two years ago.. That one dark night on the set of Mortdecai really changed my entire perspective on the 3rd party thing and opened the doors to a lot of really great things.

The DSMC2 EVF is starting to ship... Just sent out a few to RVZ in France and will continue to ship after we get back from the break and ramp up in production.

Anyway to simulate the old vs. new EVF in a still image? Mainly thinking of the FOV or how small/large the image is in the EVF and how far away it visually appears. Not really sure how to describe it. :)

Its been a while now, but I recall the RED ONE EVF working really well. Then the Bomb EVF seemed so small and so far away that I could not really use it very well for focusing.

It's not just an ergonomic issue. With DSMC1, and even more so DSMC2, the camera brain is so small and light - there are situations where an integrated side handle allows you to cruise around as if you were just rolling a big boy still camera - much easier to go stealth.

This all sounds really freakin exciting. Good time to be on the Red ride of a lifetime!

And count me also in on the SDI Jetpack!

Oh no... that means the DSLR form factor which many of us run and gun guys love is gone.

I don't know, let's wait and see before we pass judgement... I for one am welcoming the side handle with no battery integration. I always found the EPIC side handle to be cumbersome and non-ergonomic as it was built around the RedVolt.

On the other hand, the need to go as small and light as possible is often critical. If we're not able to tuck a battery into the handle, then we have to attach it via some other piece of kit.

This is good news indeed! I can't really afford the expense for the Weapon 8K, I'm looking at the lower end Epic Dragon 6K at the most, but I would love to see how the 8K performs and what it can do. I'm personally hoping that first 8K project is a movie or TV show of some kind.

Thanks for the ride and happy holidays :)

Thanks Jarred, happy holidays of Christmas to all.
JET SDI :) this is a great piece.

Like your thinking here. The open system will no doubt bring come creative solutions that would not have happened otherwise. Look forward to shooting more of my independent projects on Red and seeing what new tools the future brings. Happy holidays!

I too was wondering about that. I guess we will have to just wait and see. For now the lightest possible method would be with the Base I/O and a battery belt / v-mount belt clip. But I don't quite like the idea of having the cable dangling around all time. It's ok but with the weapon's ability to do away with the lcd/ evf cables, a wireless battery solution would be nice. The REDVOLT expander doesn't make much sense for that scenario because it's already 2.2lbs / ca. 1kg (that is without the battery).
Maybe the V-Lock Base I/O + Slim V-Mounts if they are also light enough will become the sweet spot. Need to check these out.

Belt clips not bad on a belt or tie a belt to your tripod I like getting weight off the head sometimes
