  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

December 23rd Holiday Update. Upgrades , New orders, EVFs , Etc.

Funny, if you guys just go Anton baur you get the footprint you want plus a more solid connection, I hated-mount!

Initially I liked the look of the ABs, but they got bad reviews (see below). Kind of cooled me to the idea. Also, I wonder if the Cine style cubes will fit behind a Scar-W - they seem a bit wide.

"I want to like these because they are Anton Bauers but they have some serious issues. According to AB, they must remain on the charger at all times when not in use. If you take them off they start to lose power within a day and drop fairly rapidly. Also they lock up at a the charge level and can take several hours to unlock and start charging. So to use these batteries, you need to have a charge port for every single one and they have to be on 24/7"

Ughhh I don't understand what they were thinking with their new batteries. So disappointed :(.

I think I missed that memo... my AB Cine Cubes seem to be pretty "normal" and work just fine. Only thing I would change was I wish that the LCD screen lit up on the back so you could see if they were empty in the dark.

Jarred,

Is there a way you could take a side by side pic of the Weapon set up with the REDVOLT XL and this AB Cube set up... Thanks... :)

The RED XL is a lot smaller ... i'd say the RED XL battery is 50% smaller in all dimensions than the Cube 90 and they both have about the same run time.

But the AB has a Death tap and a little screen to tell you how full it is, whereas the RED Xl has a push button battery level (that thankfully lights up)

If you don't need to worry about flight restrictions and were going with the AB cube.. the cube 150 is the better choice... its the same size as the cube 90 but has 50% more runtime, so that pretty much balances everything out.

That's pretty much my plan. My REDVOLT XLs have thus far been what I've been primarily using for shoots, which has been a surprise, but they are convenient and pack easily. My main interest was better portability versus my big honking bricks (190Wh). The AB Cine 150Wh will be what's rigged for studio days and local-ish shoots.

Thanks Jarred,

My main issue with the Dragon M8 has been long takes needs, but this has now changed with moving to Weapon what I need/want is the smallest set up possible, so to travel lighter and faster in my set ups.

We'll choose the proper Modules to compliment accordingly... But this then takes the AB's out of consideration all together, and go back to the XL Module & REDVOLT XL's or go to Slim V-Locks with a Low Mode set up using Wooden Camera's Weapon Battery Plate so to clear the Top of Camera without a Top plate.

And yeah,

Nothing over 100wh batteries, I travel way too much... So I'll need to build a stack of XL's or Slim V-Locks... :)

We have been very happy with the new Bebob V290RM Cine batteries. At 14cm (height) they are way smaller than most vmount battery options you have, though still a bit larger than the
anton bauer cubes. They come as a 90Wh, 155Wh and 290Wh option. (all with the same dimensions).
We have been running our epic-dragon with a wcu4 focus, bolt teradek, tvlogic etc. for about 3.5 hours on one 290rm battery in a rather cold shooting environment.
Though u probably get arrested if u have 4 of these in your backpack and drive close to an airport..:001_rolleyes: So I hear what u are saying Ketch.

Used the Bebob extensively and switched over to Blueshape and absolutely NEVER looked back, have a stack of 100HD and 270HD, the 270HD have unfortunately been seating at home, Dangerous Goods Shipping only...

The 100HD I have been traveling no issues, only problem now is that I must REDUCE the load, I just can't continue to pack as heavy as I have been...

For this I have been looking in a different solution, I actually have had very happy times when using the XL module, but the issue I had was I never had enough of them and had to swap out to V-Locks...

Situation has now changed and moving to the Weapon I could return to XL's, if I am to remain with V-Locks, I'll have to cut down in the weight so I'll move to a Blueshape Slim 65 or 90...

Switronix also has a nice series of Slim 82wh & 98wh.

Also I went to a good deal of trials and designing some custom plates to lower the battery as much as possible, as shows on the last pic with V-Lock on, but on Weapon I absolutely need/want to keep the battery at Top Camera level without the Top Plate as I'll have no need for one, fortunately there are now few more options and few others coming that I know of so I think I'll be happy... Was now mostly curious to see the main differences in XL or AB cube set up, but Jarred answered that... :)

I hope RED takes another look into making a lighter XL charger. Sort of defeats the purpose of being lightweight for travel.

And there's no reason why this can't be done as far as I know. I have Black and Decker 20 volt tools. One early model came with a nice looking charging platform that you slide the Li battery into. The later purchase comes with a charging head that you slide onto the battery. Each works equally well.

Indeed,

If I go back the XL route, most of the times when traveling I'll have to leave it behind and make us of the XL plate to charge the REDVOLT XL's one at the time if an other single travel XL charger solution was not to come up... If I go back the XL route with Weapon.

This is what I like about the PAG Link for travel, the charger is not only tiny but it will charge all my batteries at once (or rather one at a time automatically) while I sleep.
