  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I've been vocal about the lack of processor upgrade in the R1 (a silly oversight in this day and age), and the relative high expense of the upgrade offered (considering the performance of the lower end offerings, and the impact on rental). I stand by that, but..

Epic x changes this considerably, and if I'm understanding that $10000 gets me back into the Red "oo" future, then right now I'm happy again, on behalf of my investors also, and I think this is a much better strategy for Red long-term, I'm onboard again, and if the modularization works out, hopefully forever..

Now while we wait, Redcine..

The scarlet 2/3 its not capable of shooting 120 fps with FF30 fps in 1080p?! Its less data rigth than 3K. So why not?

The scaling probably requires a lot of CPU power, which is otherwise used for the 120 fos RAW recording. Just my guess.

EDIT: Ah, this has already been replied. I better first scan the 50 pages of "We love you Jim" posts.

P.S. We love you, Jim (and team).

Just when you think that it can't get any better, Red ups the anty and gives us more than any other camera company could. Thank you to all at the Red team and keep up the good work. You guys, and girls, are amazing.

This is almost too good to be true! A complete phase shift to the policy of some other brands who want to sell a new camera every time a minor change is made. And what will all those say in other forums whose conclusion was that Red has forgotten the original Red One owners.

Wildlife on 2/3" Scarlet

Wildlife on 2/3" Scarlet

Is it possible to have the option of a Nikon mount on a 2/3" Scarlet---I'm assuming that the smaller sensor will create a greater Field of View and magnification ratio with the use of a 35mm telephoto----which is exactly what I want to get greater reach for wildlife. Or is the S35 the only option---which I will then need to use in windowed-mode to achieve a greater mag. ratio?

Sorry if this has already been discussed.

It's interesting that the Epic X S35 lists as using redcode 250 vs redcode 225 like the other Epics (sans the 617).
So if this model could be shooting at a higher data rate, wouldn't it be true that the Epic X S35 5k files could actually
be larger than the Epic S35 5K files. I'm sure you could still choose to shoot 225.

I'm not complaining, just observing. A higher data rate would also mean greater image quality.

Any thoughts?

OK i give up with RED and their "announcements". These posts do nothing except frustrate us looking for a solution this side of whenever.

I give up and will stop bothering to wait and look toward to current crop of DSLRs which do actually deliver what they say on the tin. I begrudgingly have to start to agree that these announcements are just marketing for items that do not exists and "expect change" doesn't cut the mustard as to why things are constantly pushed back. It leans towards the vaporware tag RED have (maybe unjustly) earned.

Disappointing !

I'm sure David and FMG appreciate you taking the heat off of them like that.

Good job.

Great news!

This is what I was hoping for. Now, if you manage to deliver and I believe you will, I'll certainly grab a fixed lens Scarlet, as I believe this is going to be the Leica, Minox, name it... of cinematography, television, name it again... of the 21st century.

Thank you:)

Color me completely confused. Today's announcement nerfed the FF35 Scarlet (no more 3K @ 60P), and while the addition of the new "X" model with bonus modules included for free is wildly beyond generous, my guess is that most people shelling out $28,000+ on a camera are going to want the benefits of the monstro sensor (better performance, increased dynamic range, better A/D, etc.) - which you can't get with this "exclusive limited edition" upgrade. So we're back where we started... in order to use s35 lenses and get monstro quality, you're forced to upgrade to the FF Epic and waste a good chunk of its sensor when you shoot. Why is the one option that I believe clearly the majority of the audience is asking for so fundamentally missing?

Additionally, I see that the FF Scarlet took a price cut - which is great - but along with that we lost the overcranking ability; that's a really curious adjustment. If it needs better electronics in order to shoot faster, I think most would gladly pay the original $3,000 extra cost in order to get 60p at 3K from the camera. Or would that just eat into too many Epic sales...

It's too bad that all of the technical talk here and discussion of features has been bogged down by "other" types of posts. You make two very good points here.

Maybe you could start another thread in DSMC, Haakon, where we could discuss topics like the FF35 Scarlet's changed specs. Any discussion here is bound to be lost in the static, I'm afraid.

Seriously Jim- stop blowing my mind (Just kidding- keep kicking ass). You have left me with one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to face. I love the RED one, I love the Epic, I want both and can only justify one of them. How long will the upgrade path exist for red one owners? Can we keep our red one and upgrade it three years from now, five years from now?.

I agree that a good portion of this announcement is great. It's amazing to see a company willing to give back to its "true believers" with the Epic X.

Personally i'm juggling around which cameras to get and that unfortunately is what was lacking in last nights post.

Maybe all these complainers pissed Jim off so he didn't finish what he intended to post but what I'd love to see is a list of mods and prices (or have an idea when said list might come out). Perhaps an updated lens production chart timetable too.

Love what the company is doing. But I'd love to see what's going on outside the brain-box so I can budget modules with the camera brains i'd want and try to make a budget work.

OK, my mind is made up. Subject to change of course...

OK, my mind is made up. Subject to change of course...

I guess the smart move for me is to take advantage of the very generous offer to upgrade to the Epic X.

For 10 large we get most of the features of the FF35 Monstro, although not the fantastic dynamic range, and we get it fairly soon. Seems logical and cheap. Really cheap.

Down the road, we have two choices to go Monstro; we can pop for another 10K and get a Scarlet FF35 which will give us an "A" camera for sync shooting while we use the Epic X for off speed work.

For a total of 20K we get two bodies and virtually all the goodies. I don't think the ability to do 350 fps is significantly more attractive than 250 fps, at least not for the vast majority of my work.

On the other hand, if the almighty market demands the Epic FF35 Monstro to be competitive, we'll shell out another 33K for the Epic FF35. While it seems like a big bite, considering that the total, including the original Red One, is 61K over a few years for two bodies and the game-changing Red experience, it's still revolutionary. That 61K buys TWO cameras for about the original price of a VariCam!

I do have one rather large caveat; we Epic big-shots will be competing against the Scarlet FF35, which can be purchased for about half the price of the original Red One. For sync work, there is very little difference in the Scarlet and Epic.

I know the price of the body is but one part of a total rental package, but this may very well depress the rental rates for all Red packages, making return on investment for Epic more challenging.

Time will tell. And so will Red. For all we know, there may be big changes announced before the Epic X ships.

Bottom line: I'm very happy.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Ok, now I can't get beyond page 90. Are posts being deleted and the page count somehow being changed?

paul

this looks like page 91 to me and i can read it. but there are still some numbers ahead of this page and i can't get to them. That must be where the leprechaun gold and the free Epics are.

I think Red finally ripped a hole in the time-space continuum. That's the only logical explanation.

Sure hope Red's planning to make a LOT of the Scarlets w/fixed lenses - those puppies are going to sell better than hotcakes!

Can we please see some scarlet 2/3" footage so we know for sure if we should eb getting excited?

I wouldn't worry too much about it, just check footage from the REDOne and know that it will be comparable (and even better in some aspects :w00t:).

Otherwise, yeah, footy from an actual Scarlet would be sweet.
