Will the x models sensor module be upgradeable in the future to a Monstro? Dynamic range is 1st priority for most my clients (with fps second, res. third)

The upgrade happens through buying a new "brain"...

That's why we all want to see a a Monstro S35 brain...

I tell you, I don't get the posts on this forum sometimes.

I'll make this short and just compare the 2/3" scarlet and a roughly comparable camera in the same potential price range like an EX3.

1.) The scarlet has a better potential imager in both light response and resolution.
2.) It has a superior recording codec.
3.) When outfitted it seems like it will be cheaper than or at least comparable to an EX3.
4.) When you're ready for more, it's upgradable.

Comparing it's potential to the ENG stye cameras I usually have to deal with, the scarlet will no doubt produce better images and give me significantly more creative control in post. How is this not a good thing? Smaller... cheaper... more effective... And the other models are just exponential levels of awesome beyond that. I wish I had one of these babies when I was in film school. I would have been shooting every free second. This is going to be an awesome camera. I can't wait to get my hands on one.

Yeah, I'm now officially a fanboy. That's because I love it when someone makes a tool I can immediately see how it's going to make me more flexible, more creative, make better images, and ultimately make me more money.

Awesome work RED and crew. I can't wait it in action!

P.S. Aargh, I'm so ****ing hyped about the FF35 Scarlet! You evil REDHeads, leave my wallet alone!
It's not your wallet they want, it's your heart...
and they already have mine.

1000fps here we come!

1000fps here we come!

Epic is getting closer and closer to 1000fps. According to my calculations, we're just three more announcements away from complete democratization of bullet through the old watermelon footage.:sarcasm:

The only complain I have about this announcement is that Red isn't building a time machine by next week that can take us to Dec. 2009.

The Red One for me is a masterpiece, in term of image quality and feeling.

Imagine the result with Epic and Scarlett (less weight) !

Great job Jim and the Red team !

That they already have, but I think they wouldn't mind a bank transfer too.

I plan to rob the bank, make the transfer directly from there and then leave the building happy...

...No, that doesn't work... anyway, we'll find a way. :)

So RED isn't entering a very lucrative market after all.

The $3000 camera was just an idea that got killed off.

That's pretty sad, really. I wanted a RED camera.
Well, it was a nice dream while it lasted...

Maybe in 3-4 years, RED and I will meet in the middle after all.

As per the specifications sheet released, all the new RED electronic lenses announced have auto focus capability, and all but one of them also have image stabilization. If you read the spec sheet for mounts, it also states that the the camera mounts will have "power and intelligent lens data interfaces". Bottom line: yes - the DSMC line will feature auto focus for stills shooting. With Jim Jannard being a longtime professional stills photographer, my guess is that the auto focus on the DSMC line will be very fast and accurate.

Hope this helps...
You sure?

Autofocus is usually a camera side auxillary chip. Just because it has an interface and power doesn't mean RED will provide an autofocus chip. They provide power and interface so that you can control Iris and Focus using a remote. I don't think any of the RED cameras will actually support autofocus or autoexposure.

Well, it's true that the cheapest Scarlet is closer to a $4k camera than a $3k camera, but I'm not seeing where that crosses over the line from a lucrative market to a non-lucrative market. The $4k offering as currently spec'ed is still miles ahead of anything else you can get in that general price range. What's more, I suspect the interchangeable lens version will be quite popular.

I'm more curious about the DSMC positioning. I had thought that Red was aiming to take on the 5D/1Ds market, but at ~$10k for a FF sensor, it seems like aiming at a much higher-end pro market, and certainly out of the reach of all but the richest and/or most serious enthusiasts. While the 5D is an affordable still camera first and a video camera only as an afterthought, the Scarlet 35FF is a serious video and still camera with affordability only as an afterthought (in relation to still cameras, not in relation to video cameras—there's no argument as to whether it's a good deal as a video camera).

$3750 for a 2/3" sensor fixed lens cam ready to shoot in some format better than HDV IS in a lucrative semi-pro market.

I don't think that's very resonable. To write an annoyed post after all they're giving us? You can still get the brain+lens for 3K. As hard as it is for enthusiasts like us who will struggle to make it to 3K as it is, it's still more than a fair deal at 3750.00 I'd love for it to be 3K total but I won't complain for 750.00 extra -- especially if the controller comes off etc. Either way it's a better camera at 3750.00 than the old one was at 3K so why complain?
