  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

That said, these are great announcements. Adding FF downscaling sounds like a huge achievement, even with the frame rate penalty. Jim and the team has every reason to be proud, and all potential customers have every reason to be ecstatic. These cameras will redefine the industry.

My gripe has nothing to do with these breakthroughs... My gripe is just that I wish the fixed-lens Scarlet could have a crippled version that ships for $3K.

Forget 3K for $3K, most people in that market would be happy with 2K for $3K.

If going down in resolution while keeping the 2/3" size would shave $750 off the price of the camera, it would be a wise step to make.

Again, what RED does is huge, and deserves nothing but praise. However, I think selling a $3000 camera could put RED in the red for many years to come... RED might hate making such a "crippled" camera, but RED would certainly not hate the income that baby would generate.

I'm not saying anything here is an unfair deal. I'm fully convinced that every single camera RED makes and sells is a great deal.

RED simply does not enter low-end markets.

I think I know why we'll never see a $400 SD camcorder from RED, even if it might sell like hot cakes. RED would simply hate to make such a product. It would be off character.

A HD cam that blows everything else out of the water, on the other hand, would not be such a stretch. I wonder what Jim's market research data says, but my guess is that a $3000 RED HD camera might double RED's income.

A final word, and then I'll shut up. I'm only posting this because I think there's a chance that RED could make this camera, but is deciding against it. If so, I just wanted to put in my vote. That's all.

Retouche,

I'm guessing that the added $750 is primarily because of the modularity of the whole scarlet-epic system. It would probably be impossible for RED to sell it at $3k without losing money (or making so little as to make it not worthwhile), and 'crippling' the camera wouldn't make it cheaper. It would also be hard for RED to develop a unibody $3k camera simultaneously with the modular system they've switched to working on, and in order to do it something would doubtless have to be delayed. This is all conjecture, of course.

I can understand the disappointment at losing the option of having a fully functioning camera from RED for $3k, and for non-pros like myself, $750 is definitely a non-trivial price increase (though one I'm still likely to swallow). For the pros, I'd imagine the biggest problem with the new Scarlet over the old is that a modular Scarlet would have to be larger and heavier than a unibody Scarlet, but it should still be a small and fairly lightweight camera.

My hopes are that they can leverage the R&D from these offerings to move more solidly into the prosumer video market later, and offering a cheaper, mass-produced video camera and an affordable DSLR-killer. In the meantime I'll have to content myself with the dreamy Scarlet 2/3" specs at a price point that's higher than I would otherwise pay for a video camera from any other company.

I'm not so sure about that. Going for the best resolution & quality possible for the money is usually a good thing and makes a camera usable longer (more competitive in ever-changing technology). My FX1 was right in that $3k - $3750 range when I got it a little over 2 years ago. The new Scarlet is a lot more camera for that kind of money.

I also don't know if you could save $750 by "crippling" the sensor.

It is all good news! But choices can torment. For me it is between Fixed lense Scarlet and S35 Scarlet with PL mount for which I can use Red zooms. Now it is only a matter of calculating afordability!
Thanks JJ and Red team you listened and made an excelent line of cameras!

I feel your pain, an my sentiments are very similar to yours, but I don't think it's in RED's business model to produce a "crippled" anything. I suspect they discovered that a "complete package", out of the box 3K camera for $3K built to their standards was not feasible in the end. They are offering a heck of a camera for the price when compared to other cameras one might consider instead. I also don't quite think it's RED's game to produce a motion camera that's geared toward anybody but the pro or the high-end enthusiast, much the same way that Lexus does not intend to make a car geared toward the Kia buyer. It's simply not their market. RED is a high-end camera maker who charges less than high-end prices and I think that's pretty cool. I think many of us wanted the $100,000 camera at 1/10th of the price and they offered the $100,000 camera at 1/5th the price. A remarkable feat, just out of many's price range.

Lower resolution wouldn't decrease the cost of manufacturing.

If Scarlet was $750 less, you'd still have a problem with accompanying hardware investment anyway, which is more than those $750 which stop you from purchasing.

s'happening again... I'm stuck on page 94 and can't go forward.

My last page count on this thread has been 2 higher than anything "reachable" all day.

I don't see what the dilemma is in having MORE options. People keep asking for more and more and more out of this camera, then when they get it they say it's too complicated? That's like standing at a buffet and saying "there's too much food here".

Looking forward to 2009... the latter part anyhow.

This is simply due to the fact many posts have been deleted from this discussion... and for some reason, some of the deleted posts aren't really deleted at all (you still can get them by the search engine)...

miniRed Primes

miniRed Primes

Can we get some idea of the miniRed Prime pricing?

Am I right in assuming the 2/3'' Scarlet is a superior image to the Viper they shot Zodiac with?

Good question - the answer is probably theoretical and based on lessons learned with the original Mysterium program. Can't wait until they have prototypes churning out images...

Dear RED Team.

Let me just tell you how amazingly impressed I am that you come up with a trade-in/update program like this. As a RED owner and early bird (RED #224), I feel that you really do care about us as customers and I actually feel what can be expressed as a little guilty accepting your over generous offers of upgrades and what not. Maybe we've all just been conditioned by the capitalist apparatus since birth or something, who knows?

Anyway, it is distinctly remarkable that you people (with Jim at the rudder, obviously) continue to give in this ungrudging manner, even when some people here basically act like overly spoiled brats.

Don't you sometimes feel like punching someone through their face? I'd have lost my temper long ago and told them f§*k themselves. Do you like have a punching bag or shooting range in the cellar of that office of yours or do you just have a resident zen- master that spreads serenity?

Prior to today's announcement, I did not imagine that you would go even farther in caring for your customer base than you've already done.

Quick question, though. Could have been answered before, but I've accumulated a flexor tendon sheath infection from all the scrolling from the 13th, that I'm giving my wrist a rest with the mouse scrolling;)
The EPIC X, do I understand correctly in that all I need to get is a REDmote to be ready to shoot? As far as I can see its pictured, but not a part of the package? Am I missing something here? Will it run withouth that module?

Cheers and good thoughts from cold and wet Copenhagen

Karuna

Is that todays announcement in it's entirety? Like is there still information to be released?

I personally don't see this as being anywhere near as important of an announcement as the 13th. Not by a long shot. I'm not dissappointed, it's just I was expecting wayyyy more to be released based on the hype. I'm not one to dream about these cameras day and night and do not get my hopes up too much. lol. Now if more information is released I guess I might change my mind, but for now...why such hype for just that?
