  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DAVINCI RESOLVE and ***HACKINTOSH***

Thanks Philipp,
yes this is right direction ;) Resolve in windows = POOOWERRR and Velocity in any configuration. Even if I do not like windows but Blackmagic is doing a great strategy.
Indeed. Also that you now get the Linux version for free if you buy the panel. You can even run the Linux version the same time as the OSX version with the same license. Hopefully they will release the Linux version with the same price tag as the OSX and Windows versions.
And I heard a small bird singing about OFX support in the near future :)

ciao Brian,
post here Com.apple.boot.plist or org.chameleon.Boot.plist (if you have new chameleon) .I will see. You have monitor Apple or you have plasma or lcd in gtx 580 dvi ?
Only one question Brian , in premiere 5.5 work good gtx 580 1.5gb? model?

thanks
Luigi

Hi Luigi

Here's the apple.boot, I am using a Samsung via DVI and a Toshiba full HD via DVI to HDMI adapter:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>Kernel</key>
<string>mach_kernel</string>
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string></string>
<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Timeout</key>
<string>2</string>
<key>Legacy Logo</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>GenerateCStates</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>GeneratePStates</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string></string>

</dict>
</plist>

I find that Premiere even works a little better on Hackintosh than on PC with win 7. My bottle-neck I think is the hard drives (no raid) or maybe quad core 2.3ghz is not good enough for r3d.....?

Thanks
Brian

CIAO GUYS,
I worked hard for this problem, the system had problems installing Avid 5.0.3 and some soft of Foundry. SystemID did not recognize the machine (see screenshot).
LUIGI

Sorry for the OT, but if Luigi or anyone wants a proper system ID generated for avid or other applications you need to generate an EFI string for the onboard Lan card which MUST be created on the same XML list with the graphics cards, to create one big EFI string to put on chameleon's boot.plist.

You can use OSX86 Tools to generate a Lan EFI XML formulated text but there are other applications for that as well.

Don't forget to use the:

<key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
<string>Yes</string>

Cheers.

Luigi, I am in the process of building my hackintosh. I bought 2 GTX 580's and I already have a radeon 5870 from a different computer. Is there any way to use the Radeon 5870 as the GUI card and the two GTX's for their CUDA? Thanks.

I'm finally getting closer to building my rig. I plan to run three air cooled GTX580s. I would love to dual boot and run Windows as well. I'm hoping to run three way SLI when in Windows for gaming. From reading the manual for the mobo, with the GTX580s in slots 3/5/7 and the first two slots running the BM card and ATTO Raid card....looks like all the slots will be running at 8x? How does this effect performance in things like After Effects and OpenGL apps like Cinema 4D when the GUI card is running at half speed? Also in windows with all the GPUs running at 8x, will this effect SLI performance?

Well the cards aren't half speed, all the computational cabalities and processor power will be there, the only difference will be data throughtput from the card to the processor and the system memory, you have to remember though that you'll still have 4GB/s on each direction for that purpose, so I'll guess you'll be fine...

By the way I've managed to build (Lion 10.7.1) a GTX 580 system (although on a sandybridge mainboard with a 2600k i7) and after much fiddling about, I've set OpenGL/OpenCL/Cuda to properly work, however the system refuses to boot with all graphics capabilities properly working in any other mode than verbose, otherwise graphics applications crash, I also get random cursor freezes now and then, for now it just doesn't look quite production ready, I've built it two days ago, so we'll see how it goes from there...

Just for the record Geekbench 32 reports a speed of 12500 (prior to OC)
Cuda Z reports compute 2.0 capability with 16 cores and memory copy speeds pinned to the 6k's
Cinebench gets about 41fps.

Cheers.

Yes that's what I meant...half speed on data transfers and throughput. I have heard that in benchmarks and in real world gaming the 8x SLI setups don't show any real difference. My main concern is the performance working in OSX with really only one of those cards at 8x running apps like After Effects and Cinema 4D, the other two just sitting dormant. Hears to hoping it wont matter to much.

however the system refuses to boot with all graphics capabilities properly working in any other mode than verbose

-v boot flag in Lion seems to be ignoring kext caches a la safe boot instead of simply booting verbose... What happens if you add "UseKernelCache=Yes" ?

I'll give it a shot, thanks but I don't see how it would help...

Another question. Would the SLI bridge effect the performance and setup of the GPUs for Resolve and under OSX? I would assume it wouldn't effect it in that there aren't SLI drivers for OS X.

Hi Luigi,

I'm experiencing very bad performance on my hackintosh, only 5 fps with any corrections.... when I try to blur I get an GPU exhausted error...
My configuration:

1-Areca
2-Black Magic
3-GTX470
4-Free
5-GTX470
6-Free
7-GTX470

I followed your recipe ( Machete 3) DaVinci shows 3 GPUs,and my RAID is doing 500 MB/s in my benchmark tests.
any clue ?
Thanks
Gui Ramalho

Hi
Luigi Thanks for your greate machete installer and support!!!
Yesterday I ordered all I need to built hackintosh from your specs. There is only one difference with GTX 470 from zotac (I cant find any new EVGA here in Poland)
I just read whole thread again and realized that there is no support for Avid Artist with I'm using for davinci :banghead::banghead::banghead:
Is it completely impossible to run with MCcolor???

Thanks.

Ciao Guysssssss excuse me, i come back this days from Tanzania...
for Brian , add this in com.apple.boot.plist and ty different resolution same at you panel lcd :

<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>1280×1024×32</string>

Thanks Aristides, i resolved whit patch at DSDT is not necessari Efi string. ;)
Machete is perfect ID machine.

Cia SEAn, for me is better use same GPu.. in this case with gtx 580 is possible to use Adobe Mercury engine....
but i repeat is my opinion, and my installer is only for gtx not ati.

Jeremiah,
no sli is only in windows not work in osx.

Ciao Ramalho,
yes is possible , delete this Kext in /system/library/extensions

For you Mc color i have beta driver but i am not sure work....

Luigi,
Any problems with a Corsair Force Series GT SataIII 120GB SSD? Obviously and sadly the Asus board doesn't have Sata III, but these drives are on sale on NewEgg. I would love to use one as an OS X boot drive and another for Windows.

Thanks Luigi
Is it possible to get this drivers from you to test???

I deceided to go with hack because I have big problem with my early 2008 mac pro with two quadro 4000mac. I can't open prores files I can't even open the folder in davinci browser with prores and funny thing is that some prores is ok and some not like 444. When I go to preferences panel davinci crashing unless I uninstall decklink drivers or remove card from computer. Dwain and Dan from BM tried to help but even they can't :( and of course lack of pci is killing me. It would be funny if hack will work when spec conf dont ;)

So I have free quadros and I wonder that is it possible to use one of them with two gtx 470 maybe for GUI and other cuda software. It would give me one pci free for Raid card

1-Rocket
2-BM
3-Q-4000mac
4-Areca
5-GTX470
6-Free
7-GTX470

thanks

Thanks Luigi,
Now my system is able to play at 24 fps but I still get an GPU exhausted error when I use any blur...
My view port also gets really noissy and distorted and I ad the blur.
By the way I would love to use the same setup as Artur described but using an fiber channel board in the place of the Rocket.
I'm running DaVinci 8.1 b2 should I try an different version ?

Thanks for your fast reply ;-)

The first goal is to run Hackintosh with three GTX 470
The second goal is to install raid and quadro as gui
the third is water cooling for graphics cards and use the free pci for second redrocket
receiving computer tomorrow and I'll start the installation. I hope that everything will go smoothly
